Up for the challenge

Colorado Mesa tailback Jake Cimolino

one play away...

First-year offensive coordinator has plan to prepare quarterbacks
By Kyle Sample
Chronicle Sports Writer

ts Monday afternoon and the Montana State football team has the day off. The opponent this week is not a difficult one or at least its not supposed to be. Colorado Mesa is a Division II program with a limited number of scholarships and a recent history of futility: The Mavericks are 22-32 over the past five years and havent won a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title in decade.
program since shortly after a 31-30 loss to Southern Methodist in Dallas. Quarterback DeNarius McGhee separated his throwing shoulder and will be out indefinitely, Ash told the media members gathered outside of the south entrance

Despite the relative ease with which the Bobcats should handle Mesa, this is a strange week. Rob Ash, the Bobcats head coach of seven years, took time out of his schedule to address rumors that had been swirling around his

of Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. For the first time since November 2009, Montana State will have a quarterback not named McGhee operating the offense. Perhaps that explains why three quarterbacks are sitting in the film room preparing themselves for the coming weeks and their new positions on the depth chart. It could also be that these quarterbacks dont understand the meaning of a day off. The way current No. 2 quarterback Dakota Prukop tells it, this is nothing unusual for the teams signal callers. If the team is not practicing, playing or traveling, its a good bet at least one of them can be found watching film. When the mindset is that youve got four starting quarterbacks and one gets to play Saturday because the circumstances necessitate it,

everybody must be prepared as if they were the guy leading the offense. Coach (Tim) Cramsey prepares all four quarterbacks every day the same, Prukop said following Tuesdays practice. We all prepare as starters every day thats his big thing. I know he has dealt with quarterback injuries in the past so he definitely takes that really seriously. I think anyone No. 1, 2, 3 or 4 could step in and do just fine. McGhees injury has forced Jake Bleskin, a redshirt sophomore from Great Falls, into the starting role for todays game. Bleskin is anything but proven, throwing just eight passes in his career, including a 2-of-4 performance in the latter stages of a seasonopening win over Monmouth.

Colorado Mesa eager to square off against second Big Sky team in as many seasons
By JON MALETZ
Chronicle Sports Editor

Players to watch
Colorado Mesa: RB Jake Cimolino, The junior from Fort Bragg, Calif., rushed for 120 yards on 15 carries and scored two of the teams three touchdowns in the Mavericks season opener. Cimolino has rushed for 2,459 yards at Mesa and needs just 376 to move into third place on the programs all-time list. Montana State: QB Jake Bleskin, The redshirt sophomore, who has attempted just eight passes in six appearances the past two seasons, will make his first start with the Bobcats today. Teammates and coaches alike say the offense will not skip a beat with the strong-armed, cerebral Great Falls native under center.

Injury report
Colorado Mesa: Undisclosed Montana State: QB DeNarius McGhee (shoulder), Craig Ashworth (ankle), DE Preston Gale (knee), LB Naa Moeakiola (shoulder), WR Kurt Davis (knee), LS Rocky Hogue (shoulder), C Christian Williams (eye), DL Zach Hutchins (undisclosed), LB Rhett Young (undisclosed), DB Trace Timmer (undisclosed), OL Charles Lee (undisclosed)

Quick hits
n Montana State won its sixth straight home opener against

Monmouth but has dropped six of its last seven road openers.

Russ Martin admits the circumstances are hardly ideal. The second-year Colorado Mesa football coach was led to believe his squad had an agreement to play Dixie State in one of the 2013 seasons first two games. The matchup did not materialize, however, which left Martin and the Mavericks scrambling. When the program couldnt procure any contests against fellow Division II foes, Mesa started looking both up and down. The unenviable result: a home opener against Division III Menlo College followed by a bus trip to Bozeman to take on one of the Football Championship Subdivisions top teams. Squaring off with the high-powered Bobcats (1-1), ranked third in the latest FCS poll, is a daunting proposition, Martin admitted Tuesday. His squad relishes the opportunity, however. Its exciting. They are a phenomenal football team, Martin said. I told my players theres no doubt MSU will be the most talented team we play with the most depth of anybody. If the good lord blesses a team with more talent and ability, so be it. It doesnt mean we have to have blown assignments or mental mistakes. The Mavericks breezed through Sept. 7s opener against the Oaks. The junior tailback tandem of Jake Cimolino and Ricky Trinidad rushed for more than 200 yards, averaged 8 per carry and scored two touchdowns. The CMU defense, meanwhile, surrendered just 204 yards of total offense in the 34-0 blowout. The one downside to the rout: The Mavericks lost starting quarterback Arick Kaiser, who was relegated to the sideline at the conclusion of his squads second offensive series with a left knee injury. Kyle Duran, a fellow redshirt freshman from Chandler, Ariz., stepped

into his first college game and completed 16-of-29 passes for 142 yards and added a scoring scamper. Duran will be under center again today when CMU squares off against a Big Sky team for the second time in as many seasons. The Mavericks were locked in a tight contest in the third quarter when they headed across the state to take on Northern Colorado in September 2012. In a matter of minutes, however, CMU went from being one play away from squaring the contest to trailing by more than three touchdowns.

I told my players theres no doubt MSU will be the most talented team we play with the most depth of anybody. If the good lord blesses a team with more talent and ability, so be it. It doesnt mean we have to have blown assignments or mental mistakes.
Russ Martin, Colorado Mesa football coach

It went on to lose 40-3, its second of three consecutive defeats to open Martins tenure in Grand Junction. We had a chance to tie but messed up a protection, which led to a sack, Martin lamented. In the span of a few minutes, we gave up (16 points) that totally turned the game around. We played well for most of that game, but Im not a big believer in moral victories. If you do things on a consistent basis and build for success, eventually you will have success. We dont measure success so much based on winning or losing; we base it on whether were getting better as a football team and how close we are to playing as well as we possibly can. Just like their game last week, our

season wont be based on this one game. Well take whatever weve got, come up there and give it a whirl. The Mavericks bring Martins version of a fast-paced spread offense, one hes honed over 26 years in the profession including a successful eight-year stint as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Nebraska-Kearney prior to taking the job at Mesa. The system, based on the double and triple option, includes zone-read elements and prominently features Cimolino, one of the most accomplished backs in program history. CMUs high-intensity defense is predicated on bringing seemingly constant pressure from a variety of different positions. Its a scheme Martin hopes will unsettle Jake Bleskin, who will be stepping in for the injured DeNarius McGhee today and for the foreseeable future. Its unfortunate for them to lose their quarterback and unfortunate for our fans to not get the chance to see a young man who is one of the top players in the country perform but theyre not going to change what they do. We arent either, Martin said. They build their system around a bunch of players, not just one guy. They have a quality backup who has the cannon and the ability to be a great quarterback. Added MSU head coach Rob Ash, (Bleskin) wont have the red jersey on; hell be a living target, which will be a little anxiety producing initially maybe until that first hit, the first time he gets rattled in the pocket. Like any player, it will go away and hell settle into the game. I think Jake will be tremendous. Martin harbors no illusions about pulling off an upset. Rather, he hopes his kids savor the challenge, the environment and the moment. You dont get very many chances to play the top teams in the nation, let alone the top teams in the division above you, Martin said. This is a phenomenal opportunity for our kids and our program.

The bottom line

While Montana States players and coaches insist the squad prepares the same for every opponent, todays contest with Colorado Mesa comes at an opportune time. It provides the ideal chance to break in a new quarterback and should help the Bobcats generate some positive momentum in the wake of last weeks trip to Dallas, which cost the squad much more than an unblemished record. Colorado Mesa walked out of Bozeman with a 41-7 victory in 1988. The Mavericks will be lucky if they score seven points this time around in front of a raucous crowd that will be substantially larger than the 5,312 that showed up for CMUs opener the schools largest in a decade. For the second time in three weeks, the Cats will be heading to Texas after a resounding victory.

Tide, Aggies a summer blockbuster

HOUSTON (AP) The last blockbuster of the summer is set in Texas. No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 6 Texas A&M. Johnny Football trying to derail the Crimson Tide dynasty. Who is the hero and who is the villain depends upon your perspective. And its a sequel. The Tide (1-0) and Aggies (2-0) meet today in the most anticipated game of the season. Obviously this is an exciting game for our team, the players in our program, Tide coach Nick Saban said. OK, so Saban isnt much for hype, but theres no doubt this is huge. Looking online for a last-minute ticket to Kyle Field? Be prepared to shell out $700, give or take a hundred. A hotel room in town? Better have a plan B. Most of the space was booked not long after the Aggies upset Alabama 29-24 last November in Tuscaloosa. Texas A&M was expecting a crowd of around 50,000 at the stadium for midnight yell practice Friday night, the Aggies unique version of a pep rally. Last years victory propelled A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel to the Heisman Trophy. For the Tide, the loss was a detour on the way to a second straight national championship. Sabans team is trying to become the first to win three straight titles. The Aggies have championship aspirations, too. In a couple of tuneup games leading into Saturdays Southeastern Conference opener for both teams, Manziel has looked better than ever (six TD passes and 520 yards), showing no signs that an offseason in the spotlight has had any adverse effects on his game. Here are a few things to know about todays game: HOLD THE LINE: Alabamas rebuilt offensive line was one of the few areas of concern for the Tide coming into the season. The Virginia Tech game did nothing to soothe the worry warts. The Tide didnt crack 100 yards rushing against Hokies. After Virginia Tech everybody is talking about being disappointed in us, guard Anthony Steen said, and weve got a chip on our shoulder ... and were ready to prove something. THE OTHER QB: AJ McCarron is no Johnny Football, but Alabama fans arent complaining. The senior has two national championship rings and is one of the best quarterbacks in the country. One of his few mistakes last season was an interception near A&Ms goal line late in the fourth quarter. The bestlaid plans for Alabama probably dont involve getting into a highscoring game with A&Ms super charged, up-tempo offense. But if it goes that route, McCarron and the Tides myriad playmakers should be up to the task.
