For those who thought the management fad would die an early death, the news is bad. B Schools are alive, kicking and growing in numbers everyday. A coveted position, a plum career, or an unforgettable experience, whatever you are looking for, its all out there. Getting admission has never been easy and proficiency in academics as well as general awareness are criteria for clearing the Common Admission Test, which is the first step towards a MBA degree. Lets take a quick look at the premier management institutions all over India.

1. Indian Institute of Management (IIM)


Ranked among the top most B Schools in India, most of the IIMs offer three to four programs which include the Post Graduation Program( Equivalent to MBA), Fellowship Program(equivalent to Ph.D) and several development programs which vary in content across the 4 IIMs. To get into an IIM, one has to take the Common Admission Test (CAT) which is later followed by group discussion and interviews for selected candidates. The IIM B schools in order of their merit are: IIMA (Ahmedabad), IIMC (Kolkatta), IIMB (Bangalore), IIML (Lucknow), IIMI (Indore) and IIMK (Calicut). Almost every IIM offers part time programs for corporates with management experience. IIML also has a remarkable student exchange program where students of this B-School go to leading B-Schools across the globe as part of their course.

2. XLRI - Xavier Labour Research Institute, Jamshedpur


The Xavier Labour Research Institute, better known as XLRI was set up in 1949 at Jamshedpur. The institute conducts two courses, a PG diploma in Business Administration and a PG diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations (PMIR). You can obtain brochures for XLRI online. Most XLRI graduates are placed with excellent salaries in India and abroad. Last year, the average annual salary offer was around 8 lakhs. Appearance in the Common Admission Test is mandatory to get admission into XLRI, after which you will be screened with a group discussion and a personal interview.

Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, is the right institute if you want to pack in a MBA course within a year. This B school offers a one year PG Program in Management. ISB has an enviable visiting faculty list comprising of academicians from institutes like Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, and so on.

4. FMS - Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi


What makes FMS unique is that it is among the few B Schools, which are attached to a university. The full time program of FMS started in 1967. Over the years, FMS has grown into an institute of repute and graduates from this school are flooded with great offers from established companies.

5. Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai (JBIMS)

The University of Bombay formed Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in 1965 in collaboration with the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, to encourage the growing trend of Business Studies. It has been ranked amongst the top 25 business schools in the Asia-Pacific region.

6. S. P. Jain Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai (SPJIMR)


The Institute has one of the most commended Post Graduate Programs in India. SPJIMR also boasts of its industry and high-tech teaching material, which is in conformance with the syllabus of Business Schools like Harvard, MIT and Stanford.
