University of North Texas Fall 1, 2013 Intensive English Language Institute Week V: September 23 - September 29

IELI Camping Trip - Leaving Saturday, September 28, at 1:00 PM and returning Sunday, September 29, at 11:00 AM. Remember, if you signed up to go on the camping trip, there is a mandatory meeting Tuesday, September 24, at 12:00 PM in SYMR 270. If you signed up and do not attend this meeting, you will NOT be able to go! Lunch and Learn: Managing Your Money - Thursday, October 3, 12:00 - 1:00 PM in SYMR 260. How can you stretch your money until the end of the month? How can you build and maintain your credit so you can buy a car or a house? This session will explain how to manage your money, avoid unnecessary late fees, and develop credit history. Remember to bring your lunch!

All Payments must be made by Friday, September 27th. If you tuition is not fully paid, you will not be allowed to attend classes and a late fee will be charged to your Student Account. Please speak to Alissa in her office, SYMR 205, if you have any questions.

There will be a TOEFL Test offered by IELI on Friday, October 4 from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. Level 6/6 can sign up during Week 5. Level 5/5 or 5/6 can sign up during Week 6. The cost for Level 5/5 and 5/6 is $32. It is free for students in Level 6/6. Sign ups will be in the IELI Main Office (SYMR 204).

Are you interested in an opportunity for international women to meet American women, practice English, build friendships, and share experiences? Then Ladies Group is for you! The next meeting will take place at a local volunteers home this Wednesday, September 25, from 5:15 - 7:30 PM. It is open for women students of every level. Feel free to bring your children. Snacks will be provided. Transportation is provided if needed! We will meet by the Eagle Statue outside of SYMR by 5:15 PM. See Amber or Katie in SYMR 202 for more information or if you have any questions.

Would you like to practice speaking English? IELI wants to help! Conversation Hour is a time for all students, especially those in Levels 0-2, to meet with Americans. There will be games and snacks. This is a good way to make new friends, have fun, and practice your English. You do not need to sign up. Conversation Hour will be this Monday, September 16, 5:00 - 6:00 PM in SYMR 260. Remember, its EVERY Monday, until October 7. Dont miss this opportunity to improve your English!

Mid-term grade reports will be available for pick up Week 5 Tuesday, September 24, from 12:00 - 1:00 PM in SYMR 203. Bring your ID card. No ID card = No report. Only YOU can pick up your grade report .

Homework is not the only way to improve your English skills. Watching American TV shows or movies can be very helpful for developing conversation skills and understanding American jokes and humor. Come by the lab and we can help you pick out a movie or TV series that fits your style. We can also point you to other sources if we dont have what you like. Evan loves to talk about classic American movies, so stop by and ask for a recommendation.

Fall II term dates are October 21 to December 13. ALL current students (including Level 6 students who plan to graduate) must complete the online pre-registration for Fall II. Students can pre-register online at my.unt.edu between Week 6 Monday, September 30, 8:00 AM and Friday, October 4, by 5:00 PM. If you need help registering online, there is a PowerPoint presentation located on the IELI lab website: https://ieli.unt.edu/ieli-lab. You can also go to the IELI Lab in MARQ 314 for help. If your plans change after you register, you must go to the IELI Main Office, SYMR 204, to update your pre-registration form.

Every semester IELI produces a magazine featuring stories written by the students of IELI. Students are welcome to submit essays on a topic of their choice. For example, you could write about an experience in America, a funny story, interview a teacher or another student, or share something about your culture. The deadline to submit an essay will be Friday, November 8. Start thinking of topics now! If you have any questions, come ask Amber in SYMR 202 or ask your teacher.

There will be two live lectures for IELI students this week: Monday, September 23, 12:00 - 1:00 PM in SYMR 203 there will be a lecture on Biology. It will focus on the study of insects. Thursday, September 26, 12:00 - 1:00 PM in SYMR 203. The topic will be about Active Shooter Training and what to do if someone on campus is shooting a gun and how students should react to it.

Do you have a suggestion about IELI? Join us for a conversation with the IELI Director on Tuesday, October 1, from 12:00 - 1:00 PM, in SYMR 271. You can ask him questions, share your ideas, or just say Hello!

Be famous at IELI! If you would like to star in one of the Weekly Update videos, please stop by SYMR 202 and talk to Amber, Katie, or Hamza. This is a great way to practice your English!

Phrase: Beg to differ Meaning: A polite way of saying to disagree. Used in a sentence: Hamza - I think history is really dumb. Katie - Excuse me, I beg to differ! History is really important.
