You’re sure of a warm welcome at Pat’s pub!

THE Grosvenor Arms has always been such a popular pub for
people from Handbridge and beyond.
Even Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has been known to drop in
to sample the unique friendly atmosphere.
Now they have got recognition for their efforts by being mentioned
among the nation’s top 100 pubs in the trade paper the Morning
Advertiser!
It’s a big honour for licensee Pat Wild, who says the award recognises
the special place the Grosvenor Arms has in the hearts of so many
people.
Known to many as ‘Clubbie’s’ after former landlady Miss Clubb, it’s
also known as ‘Pat’s’ after current licensee Pat who has been in situ
since 2002.
Pat has put her own stamp on the pub, making it into a true com-
munity venue – and she insists there are no plans to turn it into a
trendy wine bar.
Pat said: “It’s a family run pub and we try to make people feel very
comfortable and welcome. I want to keep it as it is and while my
name is above the door it will continue to be a traditional pub.
“It’s more difficult now to run a pub but I think it’s an essential part of the community. It’s a place where people can
come and meet or just drop in for a coffee and a chat.
“We have something on here most nights, including quiz nights on Sunday and poker on Fridays which is proving
really popular.”
Football, cricket, darts and pool teams use the pub on a
weekly basis, as do the local scooter and keep fit clubs.
The charity work is so important to Pat, who has raised
thousands for the Countess of Chester Hospital, Hospice
of the Good Shepherd and Dee Banks Special School.
This year the hospice is the main beneficiary of funds
raised at the weekly quiz nights and the not-to-be-missed
wet T-shirt competition in August!
The pub also boasts Sky Sports if you want to watch top
quality football, rugby and cricket action.
Great quality food is served on Sunday lunchtimes and
there is also a weekday lunch and evening menu available.
So why not pop down to your local pub where you will l Cosy, friendly atmosphere

MINERAL IS THE MUST-HAVE MAKE-UP
Mineral make-up’s popularity is fast overtaking the
traditional liquid foundations and has been available in the
UK for many years now. Many of the big name brands are
launching mineral make-up lines endorsing the success of this
product.
Most mineral make-up has similar basic ingredients including
micronized titanium oxide, micronized zinc oxide (both
natural sun protectors), iron oxide, silk mica and hydrated
silica. These ingredients are often found in traditional liquid
foundations. However, liquid foundations also contain
chemicals, talc, preservatives and other fillers. Mineral make-up does not. It is often the
chemicals and other additives that cause allergies.
Benefits:
*Excellent for sensitive skin. Calming effect defuses redness associated with acne rosacea and
acne prone outbreaks.
*Hypoallergenic – there are no added preservatives, talc or chemicals.
*Titanium oxide and zinc oxide protect the skin naturally against the sun.
*Economical, as a little goes a long way.
*Excellent after skin peels as the minerals encourage the skin to heal faster and have a cooling
effect.
*Gives fantastic cover. Mineral make-up is very fine, light, non sticky and does not clog. It is like
a fine dust so does not collect in wrinkles or emphasise spots. Build the make-up to whatever
coverage you want – light, medium or heavy.
*In a rush after a busy day and going straight out – just refresh by brushing over the existing
make-up without having to wash and start again. Perfect!
Here at The Hough Green Clinic we were one of the first in the country to have Bare Escentuals
mineral make-up and are well aware of the benefits after many years of use. Our starter kits
containing two foundations (one for summer and one for winter), a bronzer, a mineral veil (to give
a flawless finish), three applicator brushes and how to apply dvd, retail for £45 (value £141). We
also have a range of exciting eye shadows and glimmers, mineral lipsticks, blushers, mascaras.
We also sell a primer that feels like silk on the skin, brilliant for oily skins and keeps the make-up
in place for even longer. The “summer bisque” conceals red veins like magic. (We’ve come a long
way from the days when we used to cover red veins with green make-up which made your skin
look, well, green!)
Samantha is up to date with all the new techniques for application after receiving first hand tips
from the famous SJ from Bare Escentuals. Samantha offers an excellent Wedding Day package.
Delighted brides tell us how fabulous they feel and how amazed they are at the long lasting
flawlessness. Following a trial at the clinic, she will come to your home on the wedding day to
make up the bride and any members of the wedding party. Rhonda Leask, hairdresser at the
clinic, offers a similar hairdressing package.
We give full tuition on how to apply the make-up and will not let you purchase a kit until we are
confident that you are confident with its application!

WHEN EVERY STEP IS AGONY

BY PETER COLHOUN

THIS month we’re going to discuss one of the most painful

foot conditions - Plantar Fasciitis. If you have suffered
from this (or are currently suffering from this) then you
will know how debilitating it feels to walk on a foot that is
completely sore across the sole and heel areas.
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Quite simply, plantar fasciitis is a chronic inflammation [of the
sole of foot muscles] at the site of the attachment of the plantar
fascia to the medial tubercle of the calcanuem [heel bone]. 1
If you had a muscle inflammation in other body locations, like
your arm or neck, you could simply rest the affected area until it
subsided and got better. However, with a muscle inflammation
on the sole of your foot, you have little opportunity to rest it as
you aggravate the problem with every weight-bearing step you
take!
How can it be treated?
When you first feel the onset of heel pain, you probably reach
for the anti-inflammatory tablets (if you can take them) and pop some extra padding in your shoe. You
then realise the inflammation is progressing and nothing seems to help!
This is where your Podiatrist can help. After a brief biomechanical assessment, your podiatrist will be
able to tell you what the cause of the problem is. This is an important factor to bear in mind: Plantar
Fasciitis can arise because of different reasons. your podiatrist will be able to locate whether your pain
has come from a limited range of ankle movement, tight calf muscles or a fascial enthesis 2 (if it has
been long and slow in coming and is linked with a heel ‘spur’).
your heel pain or plantar fasciitis may also be caused by a bad walking pattern. your podiatrist will
especially want to check your mechanics at ‘push-off’ and changeover at the mid-stance phase of gait
(walking).
once the cause of your pain has been isolated, your podiatrist can then provide appropriate treatment.
An appropriate first line of treatment in some cases may be the application of ‘strapping.’ Strapping - or
taping - stuck onto the skin of your foot can reduce improper movement where needed whilst promoting
appropriate flexion in the correct locations. You can then wear your socks or tights over any strapping
and taping.
Your podiatrist will also discuss orthoses with you. These are specialist insoles that fit inside your
footwear and are made from a cast of your foot. Bespoke orthotics are the indication for plantar fasciitis,
as the ‘arch’ area of the thin shell needs to perfectly fit your foot’s arch to mimic the action of the plantar
fascia. If you use over-the-counter orthotics, foot pads, gel supports, shock absorbers, etc, you will be
unlikely to achieve the same perfect ‘arch contour’ fit.

If you have any questions on how you could improve your walking with specialist orthotic insoles and
professional footcare, please feel free to call Peter for an informal chat on 07880 702475, 0800 410
1008 or at 137 Hough Green, Chester CH4 8JR, tel: 01244 682500. Peter provides appointments in
Chester and is an HPC Registered Podiatrist.

GREEN SHOOTS OF RECOVERY?
26 To advertise call 350398

Financial column with Simon Dangar

AWAy from Westminster the world looked a much brighter

place last month as evidence continues to mount that the first
green shoots spotted back in the spring are genuinely those of
recovery as opposed to weeds.
According to the latest data available on the UK economy, the
recession may well have finished in May. Mid-week it emerged
that the services sector – which crucially accounts for around 75%
of Britain’s economic output – actually grew in May for the first time
in over a year. Stronger than expected results in the CIPS/Markit
barometer of services conditions – the Purchasing Managers’ Index
(PMI) - gave another boost to hopes that the worst of the recession
has passed. The PMI survey’s headline reading climbed to 51.7 for
last month, up from 48.7 in April – its sixth consecutive rise which took it above the key 50
mark that signals renewed expansion. Purchasing managers’ surveys, measuring business-
to-business activity, monitor the global economy’s heartbeat, and after the convulsions of last
year, signs of recovery in the Markit surveys came through first in emerging economies, most
notably China.
The fact that Britain has now joined them is encouraging many economists to call the bottom
of the recession. Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit which produces the surveys for
the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) said that, whilst only services had
so far returned to growth, a “broad-based turning point” had been passed. “The rise in the
UK index is notable because comparable indexes for other European countries remain firmly
mired in contraction territory” he added.
Malcolm Barr, an economist at JP Morgan, was bullish before the data and is convinced the
recession is over for all intents and purposes. “When we talk about the day the economy went
back above zero it will be the May data that did it” he commented. Some economists though
were more cautious, pointing to the fact that the relationship between the PMI and official
gross domestic product (GDP) figures had been less precise than usual since last autumn and
were no guarantee that growth would resume this year.
Indeed, the Director-General of the Institute of Directors warned last week of the dangers of
believing that the UK economy is through the worst of the financial crisis. Miles Templeman
told The Times “We are in the worst of the recession now; to say that the worst is behind us is
nonsense”.
Adding to this view, the latest survey from the CBI shows that companies reported that credit
conditions remained tough in May but do expect the situation to stabilise. Indeed, lending to
British companies and individuals fell during April, according to Bank of England data which
revealed that lending to “private non-financial corporations” (the business sector excluding
banks) fell by £4.7bn in April.
However, the Bank did report a pick-up in mortgage lending on April with some 43,201 home
loans approved – the highest level since May last year and advances in May are expected
to be higher again, although still well off the highs of 80,000 two years ago. The data was
reflected in house prices with the Halifax index rising 2.6% in May – the largest jump since
october 2002 – encouraging views that the market may be stabilising.

JULY IN YOUR GARDEN
Gardening by Janet Heath
Hopefully this summer will be sunny so we can enjoy our gardens whether it is dining outside
or just lounging about in the sun.
Some herbs are great for adding to summer cooking. Mint is wonderful when added to Pimms
and lemonade or pop a sprig in the pan when cooking new potatoes or peas. There are many
different varieties of mint but grow in a pot or confined to an area where it can be contained, as
many of them will invade your garden.
In the vegetable garden, plant out winter leeks and brassicas such as broccoli and sprouts. Sow
salads and French beans for a late crop. Do net fruit such as strawberries and blueberries. I tried
to grow blueberries last year and had a crop developing nicely until the birds ate every one just
before they ripened! Raspberries seem to be largely immune probably as the fruit is not so easy
for birds to eat.
July is a great month for perennials and many come in bright colours so take a trip to your local
garden centre or visit some of our wonderful gardens to see what is doing well in July.
Achilleas are sun-loving flowering plants that come in a range of colours from yellow, orange and
red. Anthemis with yellow or white daisy flowers will continue into August or even September if you
cut off the dead flowers. Crocosmia are also at their best in July with their sword shaped leaves
and spikes of red, yellow or orange flowers. They may well need some support.
Cooler colours of white and blue often come to life in the evening and seem to have an inner
glow in fading light. Try white dahlias with their varied flower shapes. Many hardy geraniums have
white or blue flowers and some varieties will often flower twice if the first flowers are cut off after
flowering. The same also applies to Centaurea Montana the perennial cornflower.
Hydrangreas are one of the best shrubs for flowering in July with a range of flower shapes from
delicate lacecap to huge mopheads and some with cones shaped flowers. They prefer moist soil
and will take light shade but will also grow in full sun. Give them enough space to grow. They
flower on last years wood so if you cut them back, you may not have flowers the next year.
