A BRIEF HISTORY OF CALL The first computers used fifty years ago, already were used in applications related

with language learning, concretely with the translation of texts. In those years existed many problems caused by the size, processing speed, costs and other problems. The importance to find other applications started to increase, as the use of programs to aid in the military purposes, physics, chemistry, economics, maths, however, linguists tried to find ways of implement those programs in language learning specially on automatic translation which was the initial point to develop big projects as during the Cold War in which was necessary to learn Russian in a short period of time and eventually other languages, additionally to be employed in the special race originated in those years. The first programs were developed in the Stanford University and in the New York University with a program to learn and teach Russian and Dutch, these were followed by other universities as University of Dartmouth, Ohio State University, University of Minnesota, and University of Iowa. The University of Illinois played an important role, starting with the PLATO program (Programmed Logic for Automated Teaching Operations) developed in 1959 in which were developed the first and most significant applications for the teaching and learning of language at the computer. During the seventies, the size of the computers were evolving conjointly with its capacity of processing and obviously its forms and utilities as memories, CD-ROMs, DVD which employed a wide range of memory an speed. During the eighties, were developed many programs focused to the language learning as Macario which was a linear program to follow the course of the program by means of a film, after some year was developed Interactive Digame program and Montevidisco based on the selected response. The Eliza program also was created during those years and which seeks clarification and simulates a sympathetic listener through a series of general comments, request for explanations and paraphrases and rephrasing of the learners with additional question tags. During the next years with the aid of many manufacturers as IBM, Unix, Macintosh and others, CALL continued progressing and perfectioning through programs and producing new methods, finally we can affirm that during the twenty-first century, CALL has received greatest changes in the integration of the daily life of the people, because nowadays it is a very important support to realize many of the most important activities of the human life focused to the enjoyment and also to the language learning.
