Academics @ GNS
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS EDUCATIONAL VISIT TO NOVOZYMES Novozymes is a company based in Denmark ,which deals with biochemistry, biotechnology and genetic engineering. They provide solutions for substituiting harmful chemicals used in many industries with environment friendly and healthy enzymes. They have their centres in Denmark, USA, India,China and Latin America. In India they are based mainly in Bangalore. They invited us to Novozymes to spread the knowledge of biotechnology and create awareness in people as to how the use of microorganisms and enzymes can help us to circumvent any problem in future regarding environment. For us it was an educational trip like no other-we class IX and X graders of Gopalan National School had a ball of a time. First we were introduced to Novozymes by Ms Radhika ,head of the HR Department introduced us to the company .She gane us the history of the company . It was established in the year 1925.And split in the year 2000 into two parts namelyNovonordisk and Novozymes .She gave us detailed information about the aim of the company and as to how they are beneficial for the people. Then we were taken into a world of facts by Dr Chris .He was the head of the Bio Agriculture Department . He gave us a detailed explanation of how Biotechnology can be used in the field of agriculture. He also told us that Biotechnology is very important and is not widely spread in India .But soon they would try to replace most of the harmful chemicals used in our daily products with enzymes which are eco-friendly as discussed earlier .He also enlightened us aboput the series of processes which are to be done for crop production. Soil Preparation, sowing, fertilization, protection from pests, storage, harvest and irrigation. All these processes need a certain amount of chemicals which could be harmful .They are trying to replace these chemicals with microoragnic enzymes for better and a healthy yield. He gave us wonderful facts from the FAO about : The raise of population by 2050 would be 9 billion which was 34% increase of the population now . And that by this year the overall food production would be effected considerably. The cereal production needs to increase by 3 billion tones. He also updated us with some bitter truths of how agricultural land would be diminished due to urbanization , salinity and drought . He told us that we the future generation should wake up and save the world from poverty, hunger and malnutrition due to overpopulation. Then Mr. Pranjal told us about the sustainability and the life cycle assessment .We were taken into a technical world by him. We were feeling like professional employees attending a technical meeting about the sustainability of the company. Then Mr. Sanketh told about the technical services provided by Novozymes .He headed the Food Production Department of Novozymes. He told us about the successful expedition of Novozymes in Africa. In Africa cassava is the most abundant crop grown. Beer production becomes difficult there because of the lack of barley which is essential for Beer production. Import of barley would cost them a lot . Novozymes helped them to produce cassava beer which tasted exactly like the barley beer. www.gopalanschool.com/national

People could enjoy the same pleasure by having cassava beer. So cassava was not wasted and at the same time the desired variety of beer was produced .This left our mouths open wide . He also told us that they are working with the second largest beer producing company. He also broke the myth that more foam gives more cleanliness regarding detergents. He also told us that more foam means more chemicals which is harmful for clothes. At last but not the least , scientist Mr. Aditya dived into the details of how enzymes were actually made. He gave us the information about genes and the combination of DNAs .He also showed us the mechanism of various robots which were used to manufacture enzymes. And the Mr. Sanketh and Mr. Aditya led us to their respective labs and showed os robots and their working . All eyes were wide with wonder and inquisitiveness . The technical services was even exciting. We saw different doughs being made and cakes in baking trays which looked very inviting .We then went to the household lab where we saw miniature washing machines testing newly-made detergents .We were given a warm farewell by Ms. Radhika who gave all of us pizza to take home as lunch. Overall it was a truly mesmerizing and inspiring journey since we could totally relate to what was said and shown. We had already learnt the basics of which made the comprehension easier. It was one of the most memorable educational trips. SHRUTHI SONTI IX PRATHANA PRABHU X SPARSHA DWARY X

Parents @ GNS
My daughter Ritusmera M ( 4 B), has been with GNS for the past six years. Our experience with the school has been stupendous. My daughter has been doing well, both academically and in extra-curricular activities. Periodic assessments till Class II has been great boon to children at GNS. The bond that the teachers share with the students , is worth admiring. In fact, Ritu is upset that the PrePrimary section has been moved to the new block and she finds it difficult to get access to her favorite Chandra Maam , her former Prep teacher. The staff both in administration and transport are well mannered and courteous.

I am glad to acknowledge the service that the school provides, which is not just limited to educating children, but in areas like overall administration, discipline, transportation, etc. Transportation is very well managed and I never had an issue throughout these years.
I just need to say one thing before summing up- My child loves going to school. Mrs. Nimmy Sudhi

Teacher talk @ GNS

A warm farewell to GNS by Chandra Maam

It had all started for me in the year 2005 with only 10 students in the Preparatory class, which has now grown to almost over 1400 little ones in the Pre-primary level only.
The years have gone by fast but the wonderful experiences will linger on for a long time. The youngest rock stars of GNS are already very confident, intelligent and ready to face the world. The challenges seem very tiny in the big / little minds of these kids. Every single day has been a new learning experience for me along with these little rock stars. I will truly cherish each moment of being another student amongst them. A special thanks to Sandhya Maam and Deepti Maam for their everlasting support and always being there as a guiding star in all my tough and challenging decisions in school. Last but not the least my wonderful colleagues ( especially my Pre-primary Teachers) , will miss all of you immensely. All my good wishes to each and every Gopalanite, the Management and the Staff in all their future endeavors.

GOPALAN NATIONAL SCHOOL

Keep your lifes memories alive longer, and sharper than ever, with these six foods that will help keep your brain whole and healthy:
1 Build Your Brain: Healthy Fats The majority of the cell structure in the brain consists of healthy fats, including the most important healthy fats, called Omega-3 fatty acids. As the brain continues to fix itself and grow additional neurons, it needs a good amount of Omega-3s to be consumed. The best food sources to get your Omega-3 from, in order of importance, are: Salmon, Albacore tuna, Flaxseed oil, Canola oil, Walnuts, Wheat germ, Eggs 2 Protect Your Brain: Antioxidants As people get older, substances called free radicals, which are floating through the bloodstream, will break down the brain cells. If you dont put up a fight, youll experience loss of memory as you age. Several good sources of antioxidants include: Blueberries (other berries too), Broccoli, Carrots, Garlic, Red grapes, Spinach, Soy, Tea, Tomatoes, Whole grains

3 Spark Your Brain: High Tyrosine Proteins Your brain doesnt just have neurons, but also neurotransmitters, which are messengers that bring brain signals from one neuron to the next one. Your brain structure might be good, but if your neurotransmitters are insufficient, your brain wont work right. The greatest sources of food to boost your alertness, concentration, and energy are: Dairy products, Eggs, Seafood, Soy 4 Hydrate Your Brain: Water You already know that your body is made mostly of water. Even a mild case of dehydration can reduce your mental energy and capacity, causing your memory to become impaired. You should drink at least four liters of water each day. 5 Brain Building Blocks: Vitamins & Minerals Vitamins and minerals very important to brain functions include: Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Iron, Calcium Deficiencies of the above have been shown to cause learning impairment. But remember, there are many other nutrients you need, especially micronutrients, that are best found in food. 6 Regulate Your Fuel Supply: Fiber Your brain works on 100 percent sugar; however, it needs to be delivered steadily and in the proper amounts so as not to overload your brain. Consuming a fiber-rich diet will slow down digestion and gradually release the sugar into your bloodstream. Foods that contain a good dose of fiber include: Dried fruits apricots, dates, prunes, raisins. Vegetables broccoli, green peas, spinach. Peas and beans black-eyed peas, kidney beans, lima beans. Nuts and seeds almonds and flaxseed. Whole fruit avocadoes, kiwi, oranges, pears and skin-on apples. Whole wheat grains barley, brown rice, etc. Thats it! If youre looking to improve your memory, consuming the foods above will help you. And remember, steer clear of a high-sugar, high fat diet to help keep your brain as healthy possible as you age.
