Statement of Purpose

Dear Sir/Madam With this letter, I would like to express my interest in applying to IPC at the Osaka University as a PH.D student, announced for academic year 2013. In high school I graduated with Mathematics, Physics as my majors. I am continuing my academic career with the study of "Nuclear Physics" at University of Science from 2007 to 2011 and proceed to Master course from 2011. In September 2013 I will graduate with a Master of Science degree. Having looked through the materials on the IPC website, I was very delighted to find the opportunity to learn high energy physics at Osaka University. I have decided to apply for this course because I am sure it would strongly enrich my future studies and help me in my prospective career. Moreover I consider this course as a great opportunity to get in touch with Japanese educational system. Last but not least, I want to continue to work as LEPS collaboration member since my master thesis was done in LEPS laboratory. I have chosen to apply for IPC at Osaka University, because I really like its outstanding system of study. I specially appreciate the wide range of offered research topics and the freedom in joining many projects. Many of the research topics especially in high energy physics offered are unique for me, because there is not available at my current university. Very important for me is also an Excellent rating in researching of RCNP and the overall friendly atmosphere of Osaka University and University of Science as well as Japanese and Vietnamese government. The third main reason why I have chosen IPC at Osaka University is LEPS & LEPS2 experiment, which study about hadron structure, high energy photo production During my prior studies I have found out, that I would like to specialize in High Energy Particle Physics. IPC gives me a chance to get in touch with these subject through many current projects and experiments. In my master course, I have had chance to come to Japan to work at LEPS laboratory in the topic of developing Multigap Resistive Plate Chamber as Time of Flight detector for LEPS2 experiment, this is also my master thesis, our Resistive Plate Chamber has reached the requirement of LEPS2 experiment with about 45ps in time resolution, more than 99% efficiency at the trigger rate of 1Hz/cm2, moreover, with the large area strip read-out design the number of read-out electronic channel was about 400 channels which mean we saved

a lot of money for Time of Flight system of LEPS2 . I really liked LEPS2 experiment, about the fantastic physics idea throughout LEPS and LEPS2 experiment, the photon beam which was produced by Backward Compton Scattering of laser photons with energy range from 1.5 to 2.4 GeV was guided to hit the target. The productions from the target will be recorded to study the strangness production in strong interaction. LEPS experiment has been working well for more than 12 years and has reported some interesting results. An upgrade project LEPS2 is undergoing, events which can not be detected by LEPS due to the limitation in wide angle are expected to be detected and studied by LEPS2. I am keen to work in it for my PH.D. I would very much like to apply for IPC programme. This would give me a chance to deepen my knowledge in the inspiring, creative, and cosmopolite environment of one of the most famous universities in field of Nuclear and Particle Physics. Furthermore I could have great opportunity to learn about Japanese cultural. Working under guidance of good scientists in Japan, I am confident of making an original contribution to the overall development of Nuclear and Particle Physics. Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to your positive response. Sincerely, Tran Hai Nam
