What would casino do for Kenosha?

Convention, tourism industries would feel initial boost from a local casino: observers
BY JAMES LAWSON

jlawson@kenoshanews.com While local business and political leaders are hopeful the proposed $808 million Kenosha casino and entertainment center will help create more jobs for the community at large, the initial impact may be a boom to the convention and tourist industry. The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the Menominee Nations project on Friday. It now awaits approval from Gov. Scott Walker, who has said he wants to promote the development of new jobs.

State Rep. Samantha Kerkman, R-Powers Lake, expects to meet with the governor later this week to share feedback from constituents and supporters. Meanwhile, others from the Kenosha area are expected to commence lobbying efforts in the Capitol today. The casino and entertainment center project calls for the development of 3,300 casino jobs and 1,400 construction jobs. It will be a shot in the arm for the economy, said state Sen. Robert Wirch, D-Somers. It clearly will help businesses over a period of time.

Wirch noted that the expected construction jobs will last over a substantial period of time. The casino jobs are family supporting jobs, he said. People will have more to spend in the community, Wirch said.

Conference center signicant

The project calls for a gaming oor with 3,100 slot machines, 75 table games, a 5,000 seat multipurpose entertainment venue, shops,

restaurants more than 10,000 underground and surface parking spots. Importantly, it also calls for a 400-room luxury hotel and convention center capable of accommodating larger conventions. It will denitely have an impact on tourism, said Dennis DuChene, president of the Kenosha Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. It will diversify our tourist options. The conference center will be a big addition to our city. While business and political ofcials are hard pressed to estimate the number of new

jobs or businesses that may be launched in the area, they believe the rst spurt in business development may come from the service industry such as restaurants, vendors and suppliers to the casino. Its hard to say how much, but there is the potential for other businesses to thrive, said Lou Molitor, executive director of the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce.

U.S. likely to announce formal response to Syrian gas attack soon

BY JULIE PACE and MATTHEW LEE THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday outlined the clearest justication yet for U.S. military action in Syria, saying there was undeniable evidence of a largescale chemical weapons attack, with intelligence strongly signaling that Bashar Assads regime was responsible. Kerry, speaking to reporters at the State Department,

said last weeks attack should shock the conscience of the world. The indiscriminate slaughter of civilians, the killing of women and children John and innocent Kerry bystanders by chemical weapons is a moral obscenity. By any standard, it is inexcusable

consequences, he added. Ofcials said President Barack Obama has not decided how to respond to the use of deadly gases, a move the White House said last year would and despite the excuses and cross a red line. But the U.S., equivocations that some have along with allies in Europe, manufactured it is undeniappeared to be laying the able, said Kerry, the highestranking U.S. ofcial to conrm groundwork for the most agthe attack in the Damascus sub- gressive response since Syrias civil war began more than two urbs that activists say killed years ago. hundreds of people. make public a more formal determination of chemical weapons use today, with an announcement of Obamas response likely to follow quickly. The international community appeared to be considering action that would punish Assad for deploying deadly gases, not sweeping measures aimed at ousting the Syrian leader or strengthening rebel forces. The focus of the internal debate underscores the scant international appetite for a large-scale

deployment of forces in Syria and the limited number of other options that could signicantly change the trajectory of the conict. We continue to believe that theres no military solution here thats good for the Syrian people, and that the best path forward is a political solution, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said. This is about the violation of an international norm against the use of chemical weapons.

With the nal approval of the Kenosha casino now up to Gov. Scott Walker, what would you say if you had a chance to discuss the issue with the governor? Heres a look at what Kenosha News Facebook followers had to say Monday. Milton Smith: If he is concerned about jobs and growth, its a no-brainer. Just get it done. Doug Williams: Walker needs to quit playing games and bring jobs to Kenosha! Larry A. Harding: Youd better change your tune about requiring that every tribe approve our casino, or youll never win in this area of the state ever again. Jeffery Cain: He needs to not worry about the other casinos in this state, but worry more about those near the line in Illinois taking Wisconsin folks to Waukegan, etc. Carol Istvanek: Current job opportunities through Ho Chunk casino $7 and $9 per hour, and a human resource job for $14 per hour. Hey... enjoy those jobs you wanted! Good luck. Joyce Slatner: Time to leave politics behind. Dairyland helped my daughter pay for college. She parked cars during summers and weekends. We need jobs in this area. Erica Schaefer: We need jobs... you need money. End of story. Dino Marchesini: Approve it. We need the jobs and the development that will come with it. The citys agreement with the tribe is very good and it was voted on twice by the community. The Potawatomi Tribe and Mayor (Tom) Barretts opinion should have no bearing on Kenosha. If they are running a good business, they shouldnt be worried about competition. I didnt know Wisconsin is open for business excluded Kenosha. Allan Beckmann: I

would tell him to stick to his guns. There are multiple casinos within driving distance. It is odd how these places seek locations in nancially challenged areas, then the areas stay the same. Look to Milwaukee, all the promises, yet years later we are in worse shape. Then lets see who really is the force behind these things, the same Chicago based guys who have run Kenosha since the twenties. We all know their names. If not, I can clue you in. Gretchen VanderwallMohr: This will be terrible for our community more minimum wage jobs that you can live on, more work for the police dealing with the low-lifes that it will attract. Not looking forward to it at all. Nicole Sicuro Leipski: Im a supporter of the governor and hope that he continues his successful Wisconsin is Open for Business initiative of bringing jobs to our region, by supporting the casino 100 percent. Jerry Bloom: Horrible idea! Predatory businesses need to go. Create real jobs! Sheryl Halvey: Being that I live right across the street, I say, No! And, a casino is NOT the only thing that would bring jobs! Id much rather see an Expo Center than a casino! It is just off of I-94, right between Chicago and Milwaukee! And, for every new job a casino would bring, itd also bring an addict who cannot afford it. Donna Smith: Why are people so against a casino??? When there are over a hundred bars in Kenosha and any one of them have people leaving drunk that could kill you and I. Think about it people!!!!!!!!!!!!

that 67 percent of the organizations membership was in favor of the casino project. However, members of the Forest County Potawatomi, operators of a casino in Milwaukee, are opposed for several reasons. They contend the Menominee project would hurt jobs in Milwaukee and is being proposed for construction on land that originally belonged to their ancestors. Kenosha Mayor Keith Bosman likes the proposed project. I think other jobs will be created, Bosman said. The spinoff will be quite a few jobs. The construction will be over several years. County Executive Jim Kreuser said he would expect the project to have a signicant effect across the region. Businesswise, more people will be traveling, Kreuser said. When you have more visitors, a number of businesses will in taking on more customers. There will be more places to eat, people will be buying gasoline. Some people will be going into business.
