We shall be looking at why

corrosion matters Its impact on the business economics, health, safety and the environment

Corrosion Definition

Corrosion The destruction or

deterioration of a material because of reaction with its environment Most familiar as rusting and oxidation of metals Also can include rotting of wood, breakdown of polymers and other deterioration processes

Cost of Corrosion
Fontana* cites a figures of $70 billion for the
United States in 1975, from a study performed by the National Bureau of Standards and Battelle Memorial Institute. An updated study was conducted in 1998 and shows a figure of $276 billion, or 3.1% of GDP. NACE CC Study However you view it, the cost is huge.

HSE 1
There are also major costs in terms of
Health, Safety and Environmental issues. Example
BP's pipeline failure at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, in 2006 which resulted in the leakage of more than 200,000 gallons of oil. The pipeline suffered extensive corrosion due to lack of maintenance over several years.

HSE 2
U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) Chairman Carolyn
W. Merritt Senate : "Virtually all of the seven root causes identified for the Prudhoe Bay incidents have strong echoes in Texas City." These included, she said, the significant role of budget and production pressures in driving BP's decision-making - and ultimately harming safety. Conclusion cutting corners and maintenance is not only dangerous to life and the environment, it is bad business.

Tackling the Problem: 1

Understanding what corrosion is Mechanisms causing corrosion Adjusting the variables
Materials Operating conditions Environment internally and externally Interface conditions Striking the right balance COMPROMISE IS INEVITABLE Prevention/mitigation/allowances

All materials corrode under some conditions

Tackling the Problem: 2

Essentials
Thorough, planned inspection and maintenance Honest and open reporting Making sure the little guys voice is heard Education of staff at all levels from senior management down to the cleaners
They may be the people who notice that something has corroded through first, as they are always cleaning up the mess!
