NEEDS

We wish that we could pull up stakes and leave

tomorrow for Brazil. Obviously, this is impossible.
Going to a mission field requires adequate planning
and preparation. We list here for your consideration
what we believe is minimal for the needs of our work

BRAZIL
Brazil is a nation of 83 million souls who are
seeking satisfaction and meaning in life. Only the
Gospel of Jesus Christ can give hope to those without
God. The next 30 years will be revolutionary in
South America. By the year 2000 the population of
Brazil will be 200 million. Now is the time to
evangelize Brazil.
APLIC
APLIC can help the church in Brazil meet the
challenge of the coming decade. But if the associa
tion is to be effective, more funds and workers are
needed. In June of 1968 Charles and Ann Kent will
come home on furlough. Someone must be in Brazil
and have had a year of language training by Spring
of '68 to assume management of the print shop. The
need is now!

APLIC
PURPOSE
The CHRISTIAN LITERATURE ASSOCIA
TION OF BRAZIL, or APLIC (Associacao Pro
Liceratura Crista), is a Brazilian nonprofit organiza
tion which purpose is to produce Bible based, Christ-
centered literature for Christian instruction and
evangelism in Portuguese. APLIC is a co-operative
effort started in 1961 at a missionary retreat to meet
the mutual literature needs of our missionaries and
churches in Brazil.
PERSONNEL
The association is composed of New Testament
Christians who contribute at least $40,000 Cruzeiros
a year ($17). Most of the missionaries contribute
more than this amount. There are some Brazilian
members, but not very many Christians can afford
even $1.25 a month. All but one of the Christian
Church-Church of Christ missionaries are members;
and he is located in a jungle frontier area.
Once a year the association meets to discuss needs
and to elect officers. In January, 1966, during the
annual APLIC meeting, the following officers were
elected; Dale McAfee was elected General Director;
David Sanders, Vice-Director; William L. Metz,
Treasurer; Abigail Mesquita, Secretary; Charles
Kent, Director of the Printing Shop and Publishing
House; and Gerald Holmquist, Director of the Edi
torial Commission.
PRINTING SHOP
The APLIC print shop is a modern, well equipped
printing department located in Goiania, Goias, Brazil.
The shop has an Intertype Model C typesetting ma
chine, a Heidelberg 10" x 15" automatic platen press,
a 12" X 18" hand-fed press, a power paper cutter, a
power stitcher, a folder, and numerous other equip
ment which make for a productive plant. The print
shop was founded by Edwin C. Knowles, who pur
chased most of the present equipment. Since June
of 1965 the administration of the shop has been under
the capable direction of Charles Kent. Presently, 5
Brazilians are working in the print shop to produce
Biblical Christian literature for Brazil.
PROGRAM
The number one need for Christian literature in
Brazil is a complete line of Christ-centered materials
for Brazilian Bible Schools. APLIC is primarily
translating Standard Publishing Foundation materials,
concentrating on producing a complete graded course
for use in Bible Schools. The 3 year primary course
is completed. The youth and adult 2 year course is
partially done, with the first quarter material already
in use. The translation and printing of the inter
mediate and junior courses are scheduled to start in
late 1966.
Basic doctrine and evangelism tracts have been
produced in attractive form. The books. The Church
of Christ, by T. W. Phillips, and Act$ Made Actual,
by Don DeWelt, are now in print in Portuguese.
Neic Training for Christian Service, by C. J. Sharp,
is being widely used. The second edition of The Bible
in One Year, by Ivy M. Moody, is being printed for
use in Bible Schoolsand Sunday evening youth groups.
Journeys in the Bible, a 52 lesson course for juniors,
is being widely used until the regular graded program
is completed. Besides these, APLIC has produced
baptismal certificates; class attendance registers;
church membership cards; and a variety of tracts on
conversion, baptism, the church and Christian life.
THE LOWES
Carol Louis Lowe was born on July 9, 1937, in
Mason City, Illinois and reared in the Mason City
Christian Church by Christian parents. In 1953,
while attending high school, Mr. Lowe was employed
as a "devil" (a printer's apprentice) at the Mason City
Banner Times. Working part time during the school
term and full time during the summer, he worked
several years while attending high school. Southern
Illinois University for 2 years, and during his first
year at Lincoln Christian College. While a student,
Carol served for 15 months as minister of Bader
Christian Church, Bader, Illinois.
In the Spring of 1964, the year he was graduated
with an A.B. degree in Ministerial Science and com
pleted his class work for an M.A. in Church History;
Mr. Lowe returned to work for the Banner Times full
time due to the illness and death of Victor B. Rickard,
publisher. In July of 1965, Lowe was employed as a
journeyman printer in the commercial printing de
partment of the Lincoln Daily Courier. He is pres
;;'t
ently on the Executive Committee of Local 327 of
the International Typographical Union and rep'resents
the local with The Lincoln Trades and Labor Council
(AFL-CIO) of which he is Treasurer.
Barbara Dilley Lowe, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Carl Dilley, was born in Gary, Indiana, on
January 14, 1939. She became a Christian in 1952
at Hebron, Indiana, where her family was living.
Barbara's parents have been active members of the
Hebron church, where Mr. Dilley is a teacher and
an elder.
A year after graduation from high school, Barbara
entered Lincoln Christian College and majored in
Secretarial Science. She was graduated cum laude in
1963. Barbara and Carol were married on August 5,
1962. She has held several positions, among them
temporary manager of the Lincoln Christian College
bookstore and one year as a private secretary at Stet
son Corporation. She has also taught in Bible School,
D.V.B.S., and various youth groups.
Barbara has artistic ability which she hopes to
utilize on the mission field. She has studied in chalk
and oil in college and privately, and is presently teach
ing a weekly art class.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The following are excerpts from letters written
to the directors of APLIC and the brotherhood.
They arc two o the finest Christian people we have ever met.
Their wholehearted commitment to the apostolic faith is strength
for a full commitment of life excmplifietl in their conduct.
We arc happy that they have volunteered for Christian service
in Brazil. Brother Lowe is a printer by trade, and this, with his
training for tlie ministry and missionary work, well qualifies him
for the service they desire to perform on foreign soil. We can
wholeheartedly recommcnd them for support and cncouragc our
brethren everywhere to hold them in their prayers.
Paul Thompson, Chairman
Board of Lincoln Christian Church
Brother Lowe preachcd for us, at the Bader Christian Church,
for some time while a student of Lincoln Christian College. We
know them both to be of the finest Christian character and
earnest and conscientious in the work of the Lord Jesus.
. . . We can recommend them without reservation.
Elders of Bader Christian Church
Bader, Illinois
Because of their conviction, abilities and consecration I
would consider them a special asset to any mission field. Carol
has a wide gr.tsp of the independent movement in the Churches
of Christ and both arc deeply committed to the cause of New
Testament Christianity. ... I heartily recommend this fine
Christian couple to the printing ministry of the churches of
Brazil and pray God's blessing upon them.
Lonnie E. Dever, Professor of Missions
Lincoln Christian College
Presently, I am his Bible School superintendent and Asst.
Foreman at the Courier-Herald Publications where he is em
ployed. Carol and his wife (Barbara) both teach at the present
time in the Bible School. Both are doing a fine job there.
Brother Lowe is mechanically minded and takes care of
adjustments on the presses.
I am very pleased that someone with basic knowledge in the
art of printing is answering this call that through the printed
word the Gospel might be spread.
Charles F. Hamilton
(Elder of Lincoln Christian Church)
1 believe that Carol and Barbara are Qualified to serve with
APLIC because of the abilities that they nave developed which
should enable them to render an effective ministry through the
medium of the printed word.

Hill Street Church of Christ

LOWE NOTES
from a Recruit to Brazil
TO OUR PARTNERS IN CHRIST
(Affiliated with APLIC--Association for Christian Literature)
Dear Friends in Christ:
Barbara and I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for the opportunity to be your witnesses
in Brazil. We shall endeavor to do our utmost to be an honor to Christ's name. Pray with us that the
Lord will use us to his glory.
We are very pleased to introduce to you our forwarding agents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Baker. The
Bakers are active members of North Highlands Church of Christ in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Ralph is an el
der, teacher of the young married people's Bible School class, and a member of the missions commit
tee of which he was chairman for two years. Linda is assistant superintendent of the Junior Department.
The Bakers are active in North Highlands' choir program.
Ralph is employed by Rea Magnet Wire Co., Inc. as supervisor of data processing. Linda is as
sistant supervisor of the Baker household--Phillip, 11; Andrew, 9; Daniel, 7; Amy, 5; and Annette, 2.
The Bakers are full time workers for our Lord.
We have been blessed this past month by three special gifts. Mr. Walter Stram of Pacifica, Cal.,
gave us four bound volumes of CHRISTIAN STANDARD for missions use. Mr. and Mrs. Emerson White-
hurst of Ft. Wayne, Ind., gave us a small letterpress to use for missioii conferences and other publicity.
We wish to thank these for their generosity. We will seek to use these gifts to exalt Christ.
Several have asked us this month how our support is developing. We are hovering under the half
way mark. It appears that we will be unable to begin language training in Brazil during August when
the next class starts. We ask that you will join with us in asking our Lord and his people to open doors
for us to depart forthrightly. The followii^ churches have pledgedregular support: Bader Christian
Church, Bader, 111. ($70); Highview Christian Church, Washington, III. ($40); Hebron Christian Church,
Hebron, Ind. ($130); and Lakeside Christian Church, Springfield, III. ($100). There are several individ
uals who have indicated their intentions of supporting us regularly. To date, $340 a month has been pledged.
After June 1st, don't send us your money for missions. Send all funds to our new forwarding
agents made payable to APLICLowe Fund. AH correspondence regarding our work and speaking en
gagements should still be sent to Lincoln.

Dear Partners in Christ:
The Lord willing, we will celebrate the new year in Brazil. Our date of
departure has not been set, but we are investigating modes and schedules in view
to leaving in December. Our support should be adequate by then to sustain us.
We still need $2000 for transportation, import duty, and operating capital. But
the Lord willing, we will leave come Christmas to take the gift of the Gospel to
the lost in Brazil.
The latest statistics indicate phenomenal church growth in Brazil. In the
past 15 months the Pentecostals in Brazil have grown 1,200,000 . Max Ward Ran
dall recently stated that they are growing at a rate of 50,000 souls a month. The
Southern Baptists, according to one of their missionaries to Zambia, just finished
a revival in Brazil that saw 100,000 additions . Now is the time to "Publish Glad
Tidings"
We are almost ready to go. The following churches are sending regular
support: Bader Christian Church ($55); Highview Christian Church, Washing
ton, III. ($40); Hebron Christian Church, Hebron, Ind. ($130); Havana Church
of Christ ($10); Lakeside Christian Church, Springfield, III. ($100); North High
lands Church of Christ, Ft. Wayne, Ind. ($20); and Park Forest Christian Church
($10). Besides the $365 a month received regularly from the above, we are re
ceiving $57 a month from individuals. The total regular support to date is $422
a month. We expect final confirmation this month of an added $200 to $275. We
still need from $50 to $125 a month to meet our minimum budget (see brochure).
We must have these funds promised before we leave.
A number of special gifts have been received this summer. Mr. and Mrs .
Ronald Dafforn, New Haven, Ind., gave us a dehumidifier. Lakeside Christian
Church gave Barbara a number of visual aid materials . The DVBS of St. Ann,
Mo. made puppets and flannelgraph backgrounds. Robert Anderson of Spring
field, III. gave us a Model 80 Multigraph-Multilith duplicator. The second Sr.
High Week campers at Lake Springfield gave $230 for a Combo punch and plas
tic binding machine. The student cabinet of Lincoln Christian College just voted
to give $1000 toward the expansion of the APLIC print shop. We appreciate the
interest these have shown toward "publishing" the Good News in Brazil.
The fellowship which we have experienced since our last newsletter has
been rich and, we trust, profitable for the work of APLIC. We have camped two
weeks with Senior High groups (Cedar Lake and Lake Springfield) and shared three
weeks of DVBS {Lakeside, St. Ann, and Jennings). We have presented our work
to Lansdowne, E. St. Louis; Bader; Hebron, Ind.; Maple Lawn, Joliet; Crown
Point, Ind.; Athens; St. Ann, Mo.; St. Charles, Mo.; Defiance, Ohio; South Side,
Springfield; Garrett, Ind.; Coburn's Corner, St. Joe, Ind,; New Haven, Ind.; High-
view, Washington, III.; Perry, Kans.; Valley Falls, Kans.;and to Kentucky Chris
tian College. K.C.C. extended the privilege of addressing their student body, two
mission classes, and their mission interest group. One of the highlights of the
summer was the week at Lake James School of Missions . Both Barbara and I had
opportunity to present our work. We shared in Faith-Missionary rallies at Markle
and Fern Creek, Ky. , being the main speaker for part of the latter. The North
American and National Missionary conventions were attended.
The pace of the next three months will be fast. This week we will share in
the first Faith-Missionary Rally of the Ferguson. Mo. Christian Church. Monday,
Oct. 16, we will visit Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Nixon, Ann Kent's father and mother,
in Garnett, Kans . Wednesday night we will present APLIC to a new congrega
tion at Scott City, Kans . Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we will share with the
church in Abilene, Kans., who are contemplating being regular supporters . Oct.
29, Nov. 12 & 19 are being scheduled by Ralph and Linda--our forwarding agents .
Nov. 1-5 we will be participating in a Missionary Conference at Havana Church of
Christ. When at home, we shall accelerate our preparations to depart. Remem
ber us in your prayers .
Yours in Christ,

December 23, 19^7
Praise God! In just a few short hours we leave for Brazil!
We are indeed grateful for the opportunity you are giving us to be
your witnesses in Brazil. We pray that our Lord will use us to His
honor and glory Tomorrow a new day dawns, and with it a new way
of life# Remember us in your prayers.
l^ssionaries make rash statements. In our last newsletter we
outlined our needs, stating we would not leave until these were met.
Our goal has not been reached; and yet, we are leaving tomorrow.
We are leaving trusting that the Lord will provide. Three churches
are considering making us their xd.tnesses to Brazil. We are praying
that they will make decisions soon in our favor. Without added support
the expansion of the APLIC print shop will not be underwritten.
Without added support we xd.ll be unable to provide adequate transporta
tion for our work and at the same time shore up the sagging finances
of the APLIC operating fund.
A special thanks goes to all those who have sent in a little
extra this past month to help our travel fund. We have begged,
borrowed, but not stolen, to pay our way. So far, we are ahead.
With $80 left in the general fund and $500 still needed to pay
transportation and customs on our unaccompanied baggage, we could
still use some of that Christmas bonus money. If you caji help, send
the offering to our forwarding agents, marked FOR TRAVEL FUND. Help
keep us out of the red!
We are responsible. Lincoln Christian Church ordained us as
their witnesses to Brazil, and have agreed to be our sponsoring
church. The Elders of Lincoln Christian have assumed oversight of
our work, having the authority to call us home at any time they think
it advisable. We are responsible to them for anything we might do,
even as their ministers in Lincoln are. We are responsible to our
Lord and directly to His church.
Until we meet again, may God bless, keep and use you to the
honor and glory of His Son and our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Your witnesses to Brazil,
Carol and Barbara Lowe
