SUNDAY MASS CONSOLIDATION Begins September 8 at 9:30 am
I thank all who responded to my request for input on consolidating the Sunday Masses. Effective Sunday, September 8 we will have only one Sunday Mass at 9:30 AM. The reasons for making such a change were outlined in my July 14 Letter to the Parish. I received over 3 dozen personal responses. Some were by email and voicemail but most were personal conversations. The affirmative responses outnumbered the negative by about 6 to 1, with my receiving 29-30 favorable to 5-6 unfavorable. From conversations with other Staff and various parish Councils and Committee members, they too received responses in about the same ratios. My July 14 Letter noted that a plus side of consolidation would enable us to better plan both the Liturgies and the Childrens and Adult Faith Formation offerings on Sunday mornings around community building events such as the monthly breakfasts or follow with a brunch or community activity. To that end we invite everyone to the Annual Parish Picnic on September 8, following the 9:30 AM Mass. There will be more information about the Picnic in future Bulletins.

PASTORAL CORNER
Running the Race
Over the past thirty years or so we have witnessed a tremendous growth in the phenomenon or running. It seems that every year new cities and towns are adding marathons or shorter running events to promote all kinds of causes. Sometimes of course just promoting the run itself. If asked the question, Would you find it easier to run a marathon on your own or with others?, most would of course answer With Others. The popular articles of ages past describing 'the loneliness of the long distance runner' speak only to the zeal and commitment of a few. A runner running alone in an empty stadium is not likely to give of his best. But a stadium full of cheering fans is a different story, the cheers and encouragement of the fans urge the runner to give it their all. Most of the now thousands of runners participating in various marathons are not interested in being placed among the top finishers, but only in finishing the race. In this context most runners see the other runners as companions rather than competitors. They are seen as supporters a la we are all in this together. This enables each to draw strength from the other and their example. Together the runners create a flow so that all are carried along as in a powerful current. It's not just in running that people draw strength from companions. The author of Hebrews in the Second Reading this Sunday exhorts the readers (and us), to persevere in the faith. No matter the cost, Hebrews says, we should draw strength from the 'cloud of witnesses' who have gone before us. At the time, Hebrews is referring to the saints of the Old Testament who had run the race before the first century Christians. We Christians of today are conscious of being part of an even longer chain of witnesses going back twenty centuries to the time of the apostles and beyond to the earlier witness of generations of he children of Abraham. When we experience weariness and a sense of failure and doubt about our faithfulness, or even continued church membership, this great line of past runners, as well as the current community of runners with us are saying to us, Stay in the race. We are with you. Don't give up.
Fr. Charlie Brunick, CSP

POPE ASKS PEOPLE TO CONSIDER WHAT THEY DESIRE MOST

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Yearning and loving give people the strength to move forward and overcome obstacles, but Christians must ask themselves what really is their hearts' desire, Pope Francis said. "All of us have a desire," the pope said Aug. 11 during his midday Angelus address. "Pity the person who doesn't have a desire. Desire moves us forward, toward the horizon, and for us Christians that horizon is an encounter with Jesus, who is our life, our joy, our happiness." Addressing thousands of pilgrims in St. Peter's Square, the pope asked them to think about what Jesus said to his disciples in the Gospel of Luke: "Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. Do you have a heart that desires or a closed heart, a sleeping heart, an anesthetized heart?" the pope asked. "And what, for you, is the most important, most precious thing, that which attracts your heart like a magnet?" Many people would respond that their family is the most important thing, he said. That's good, but "what is the force that holds your family together? It's love, and the one who sows love in our hearts is God."

The Twenty and the One: A well worn one dollar bill and a similarly distressed twenty dollar bill arrived at a Federal Reserve Bank to be retired. As they moved along the conveyor belt to be burned, they struck up a conversation. The twenty dollar bill reminisced about its travels all over the country: Ive had a pretty good life, the twenty proclaimed. Why Ive been to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the finest restaurants in New York, performances on Broadway and even a cruise to the Caribbean. Wow! said the one dollar bill. Youve really had an exciting life! So tell me, says the twenty, where have you been throughout your life? The one dollar bill replies, Oh, Ive been to the Methodist Church, the Baptist Church, the Lutheran Church, and the Catholic Church. The twenty dollar bill interrupts, Whats a Church?
