Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 11, 2013

April 24, 2011 , 2010

My dad was here at St. Stephen a couple months ago. One of my nephews wasnt able to make his confirmation at his own parish in Olmsted Falls due to a scheduling conflict so he made it here when Bishop Quinn came to confirm a couple of adults & several of our young people. He asked my dad to be his confirmation sponsor, and I couldn't think of a more worthy person to ask. Dad is 86 years old (his wife Mildred will be 94 this December!). Dad still teaches 4th Grade PSR. He lives a very active and religious life. He, along with my mom, were really at the heart of my vocation. They raised us with a constant example of faith. When my dad was here for the practice for confirmation, he mentioned that he was having some pain in his back & shoulders. Dad has had a long history of heart disease. He had two major heart surgeries & a major heart attack. So my sisters kind of kidnapped him & took him to the hospital to have that checked out. He ended up having a heart catheterization this past week & gratefully all is well. He didnt even have a blockage so no need for a stent. The arteries that he had bypassed & repaired almost 30 years ago were still in great shape. I share this with you because sometimes we take our loved ones for granted & we need to always be grateful for their presence in our lives. Take a moment to thank God for those who are family or like family in your life today & pray that he may grant good health and especially a deep faith to them all. This Thursday, August 15th, is the feast of the Assumption of Mary, a holy day of obligation. Our Vigil Mass will be on Wednesday, August 14th at 7pm (which is our normal Mass time on Wednesday after eucharistic adoration). Mass on Thursday will be at 9am but there will be no Mass Thursday evening. We pray that Mary may watch over our loved ones as she watched over Jesus so that we may follow her example of faith and gratitude.

The Feast of the Assumption (August 15th) celebrates Marys passage to heaven at the end of her life. This August feast dates to the 6th century when her dormitio n or Falling asleep became the focus of the feast day. The question of whether Mary was assumed body and soul was finally defined by the Church in 1950. The idea that Mary was assumed into heaven is connected to her having stood in the presence of God at the annunciation. Learn How to be a Saint! Our heavenly Father calls each of us to sainthood. To obtain sainthood we are to imitate Christ. Please prayerfully consider following Jesus in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi. We of Solanus Casey Fraternity, are a community of faithful men and women practicing our Roman Catholic faith by praying the liturgy of the hours twice daily, wearing the Tau cross, studying the ways of St. Francis and applying those ways to our everyday life. The spiritual benefits we reap are many. We gather the 2nd Thursday of every month at St. Stephen in West Salem at 7:00pm. For more information, or a ride to attend one of our meetings, call Carol or Rich Cooke 419-945-3038.
