Governor appoints Deputy D.A. Elliott Sattler to Washoe judgeship
Wednesday, 13 March 2013 07:06
Governor Brian Sandoval has appointed Washoe County Deputy District Attorney Elliot Sattler II to the seat on
the Second Judicial District Court that became vacant with the retirement of Judge Steven Elliott after 16 years on
the bench.
Judge Elliott, who served on the District Court Department 10 bench since 1997, retired on March 12, 2013.
In a March 8, 2013 news release announcing the appointment, Governor Sandoval stated that Elliott Sattler II has
tried hundreds of cases and has strong prosecutorial experience. I am confident that the depth of his experience in
the courtroom and his long-time roots in Washoe County will allow him to hit the ground running.
Mr. Sattler, 46, has been a Nevada attorney since 1992. In 1993 he joined the Washoe County District Attorneys
Office where he is a senior trial deputy attorney assigned to the felony trial team. He served as the prosecutor in
the highly publicized Brianna Denison murder case.
Mr. Sattler is also a member of the Homicide on Call team, a special unit of prosecutors qualified to prosecute
homicide cases.
A Nevada resident for 41 years, Mr. Sattler received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science with a
minor in Economics from Willamette University, where he graduated from its College of Law in 1992.
In his free time, Mr. Sattler judges mock trial competitions and constitutional government competition. He is past
president of the Washoe County Bar Association and currently serves on the board of directors of Washoe Legal
Services. He also serves on the State Bar of Nevadas Transition into Practice Committee.
Ten attorneys applied for appointment to Judge Elliotts vacancy. District judges must be attorneys with 10 years
of legal experience, at least two of those in Nevada.
Mr. Sattler will serve the remainder of Judge Elliotts term, which ends in January 2015. He must run and win in
