8th August 2013 No 10

We are conducting parent teachers interviews this week at school. Written reports went home at the end of Term 2. These reports acknowledge the good work and progress of individual student. Sharing knowledge, discussions, feedback and feed-forward to parents and students is one of the best ways to encourage further progress and encourages a positive attitude towards learning. Another big, event which is looked forward to this week is our annual cross country. Students are pretty fit relative to their involvement in winter sports. Competition and tough races are predicted. Come along to Gabriels Gully this Friday 9th August. Races begin at 1.10pm. The term calendar is filling up with many exciting events. Something new this year is Junior School production. Students have been auditioning for parts, and are very keen to be involved. For our students in Yr11-13 this is a very important term during which the focus is on preparing for externals, with school exams to be held late in the term. Our goal is straight forward; to prepare students for NCEA exams and ensure success in gaining NCEA 1,2 or 3 as is appropriate for individual career and tertiary patheways. In relation to career pathways Mrs Howell and Mrs Murray had a number of students busy during the holiday break; Josh and Troi spent a week at Otago Polytech being introduced to the trade of Welding. Both boys enjoyed the experience and were rewarded for their hard work by gaining NCEA Level 2 unit standards. Taimoana successfully engaged in an introduction to Health and Beauty Therapy course based at Industry Training Solutions. Leaha and Ellen completed a Basic Food Safety course through Industry Training Solutions gaining valuable Level 2 credits. Year 13 students Holly, Kelly and Brittany were likewise busy completing an Advanced Food Safety gaining Level 3 qualifications. Kind Regards
John Auld

New Zealand Area Schools Nationals

Whangarei July 2013

Week 1 of the holidays was very busy for seven of our students: Nadia, Abby, Merran, Brooke, Kylie, Oscar and Kelly. They were part of a 33 strong team representing Southern Area Schools. Air travel to Auckland followed by a bus trip to Whangarei meant Day 1 was long and tiring. Day 2 was a day for team practices and a little sight seeing. Day 3 and the tournament proper begins. Our students competed in a range of events.

With five students making South Isand teams, one being selected for New Zealand and two selected for an extended Trans Tasman squad this was an amazing event for Lawrence Area School. Key organiser, coach and team manger was Kate Anderson. Kates contribution to Area Schools activities at National Level/Touranment as well as Leadership camp is outstanding. A big thanks to Kate and to parents Janine Lyders and Jennie Cameron for taking great care of our students in Whangarei. The team would like to thank their generous sponsors: Lawrence Lions and Lawrence PTA. Also to everyone involved in a most successful BINGO/AUCTION of PROMISES Night.
