community are cordially invited to attend this event and view the results of our
Grade 10 students’ hard work throughout this school year. A special invitation

upcoming school year, Grade 9 parents are also specifically invited to attend the Exhibition and a presentation by
Barbara Wrightson, the MYP Coordinator, from 10:30 to 11:00 on May 27th in the cafeteria.

IST Staff Appreciation Day

The IST Staff Appreciation Day barbecue/luncheon will be held on Tuesday, June 2nd.
The PFO will provide meat, chicken, sausages, and drinks. Parents can show their apprecia-
tion of teachers and staff by making and donating various dishes to accompany the food pro-
vided by the PFO. Appetizers, side dishes, desserts, salads, and bread donations from par-
ents would be greatly appreciated. Splitting your donation into two portions will ensure
that both the Elementary and Secondary staff get a chance to enjoy your culinary skills, as
they have two different lunch hours. Parents can send their food donations in with their
children to be dropped off in the main foyer, or bring their food in by 11:00 a.m. on June
2nd. We will be holding this event in the courtyard (between the library and the main foyer).

We must ask parents to refrain from eating until the teachers and staff members (from both Elementary and Secon-
dary lunches) have eaten. We need parents to help that day with regulating portions so that everyone gets equal
amounts. If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer that day to serve portions, please contact anyone on
the PFO Committee or e-mail us at IST_PFO@istianjin.net

This week in Elementary Library

N-1 have been enjoying pictures books by Mo Willems to celebrate his latest
award, “Best Picture Book for K to 2” for the book The Pigeon Wants a
Puppy. Mo Willems is a very popular author among IST students. His deliber-
ately simple illustrations and text are an excellent model of how focusing on
the most important details of a story make it come alive.
Grade 2 used the library catalog’s Visual tab to search for books relating to
their unit on How we share the planet. The content focus of the unit is en-
dangered animals, and the students have many titles to choose from. The
Visual tab also has links to student-friendly sites on endangered animals.
Grades 3 to 5 have been enjoying Lynne Truss’s Eats, Shoots and Leaves book
on punctuation. This book has been on the bestseller lists for months and has
sold more than 3 million copies worldwide. Ms. Truss makes punctuation fun
and interesting. Would you like to test your punctuation knowledge? Go to
www.savethecomma.com and take the Comma IQ test.
Good luck!

Volunteers Needed for the 2009-2010 PFO Committee

There are several positions open for next year’s PFO Committee. Please consider volunteering your time to be a part
of this worthwhile organization. PFO members engage in activities intended to support faculty, staff, and parents in
their efforts to provide an excellent school experience that fosters the intellectual, moral, and personal development
of all IST students. This is also a great opportunity to help sponsor events that bring together members of the IST
community for social and informative purposes and to facilitate communication between all members of the greater
IST community. The PFO also provides a forum for discussion of common problems and concerns and assists in fund-
raising activities to the exclusive benefit of our children. Interested parents can e-mail the current committee at
IST_PFO@istianjin.net or sign up below and return this form to the school if they wish to help inspire and enrich
their children’s educational experience.

The positions that are currently open are President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and all of the Liaison posi-
tions (Korean, Western, Danish, French, European, and Asian).

TEAM BUILDING TRAINING UPDATES

On May 15 and 16, 2009, the IST Chinese staff successfully underwent teambuilding training in Jixian County. Thanks to the
collaboration between the Chinese Professional Development Committee and the IST Human Resources Department, and the
support from the IST administration, faculty, and board, the weekend was possible.

It was a challenging but rewarding experience which perfectly integrated personal growth and development with group
leadership and team work. All lifetime lessons and values of confidence, courage, trust, integrity, compassion and coopera-
tion were compressed in 1.5 days. We have learned that goal setting, concrete planning, acceptance of responsibility, risk-
taking, efficient and effective communication, and leadership are the indispensable elements to fulfill a mission.

One quote from the instructor perfectly explains the whole training, “We are always better than we know.” We all have
found our true potential by challenging ourselves, by pushing our limits, by achieving things we never thought possible. We
all have the ability to transcend self-imposed limits.

The last activity was spectacular. It involved the whole IST team, climbing over a 4.26 meter wall without the aid of any
tools. With support from the base and dragging and pulling from the top and through our wit and wisdom and all strenuous
efforts, we all burst into the joy of triumph. We were deeply touched by the whole team. We are grateful to the organizers
and planners for putting the weekend retreat together and to everyone in the IST team. It was an absolute success for the
whole IST team, and we know once again what a great team we are in.

Special thanks to Mr. Moody for his strong support and Bravo, IST Team!

by Laurette LIN.

Sports BRIEF

ISAC Elementary Track and Field Meet

On Friday May 15th 2009 a group of 21 excited elementary students traveled to WAB to compete in the an-
nual ISAC Elementary Track and Field Meet. This was perfectly timed as we have just had our own meet
for Be Active in May Your Way Day and also we have just finished our Athletics unit in Physical Educa-
tion classes.
The event itself was extremely successful with approximately 1000 competitors and the competition was
very strong. Our students performed very well indeed with most making the finals of their respective
events and in particular Michael Fitzgerald who won a Gold Medal in the 60m sprint, and Jung Woo Park
who won a Bronze Medal in the Javelin.
Well done to all competitors who performed and behaved very well on the day.
