Thanks to all those who have donated to the Chair Drive thus far, we were able to finally purchase

our 70 new banquet chairs. They are almost exactly the color of the dining room chairs and the seats are covered in a material that will allow us to wipe them clean, which should increase the life of the chairs. We are also about two-thirds of the way to our goal of replacing the loveseats in the Living Room and Lobby. There is still time to help us do that (see page three for details)!
Perhaps the best part about the new chairs is that they got here just in time for the wedding reception of Club member Monica Mahaffey and her husband Paul Otterness (pictured right) held at the Club on Saturday, July 20th.

After a ceremony at Westminster Presbyterian Church, the wedding party proceeded to the University Club, led by bagpiper Mike Battenfeld. A delicious dinner in the Dining Room was followed by a full Irish seisin in the Grille Room. The bride joined the band for such traditional favorites as "Red is the Rose" and "Caledonia," a song popularized by the band Celtic Woman. The next time you see Monica, be sure to offer her this popular Irish wedding toast: "May you live as long as you want; and never want as long as you live!"

The Albany Distilling Company, owned by John Curtin and Matthew Jager, is a modest operation, producing craft spirits one small batch at a time. Its headquarters are located in downtown Albany, not far from the site of the citys original 18th century distillery.
Matt Jager will join us at the club for a special tasting on Friday, August 16th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Our Original Albany rum pays homage to Albanys first distillery, he says. The Quackenbush Still House produced an unaged rum from Caribbean molasses and Hudson River water, fermented with wild yeasts in huge, open wooden vessels. We use modern equipment, better yeast, and a more suitable water supply, but we follow the same recipe and use the methods of our predecessors. Bright tropical notes shine through the rich, earthy flavor of the Caribbean cane, giving way to a long, creamy, butterscotch finish. Original Albany rum is excellent neat or on the rocks, but also brings an exciting layer of character to cocktails. Original Albany rum will be featured in the signature cocktail for the event, U. Club Rum Punch. There is no cost for the tasting, which is being hosted by the Clubs Food & Beverage Committee, but we certainly hope you will make an evening of it and join us for dinner as well. Then theres Gan Bei which is Drain Your Glass in Chinese; Yam Seng, Finish Your Drink in Singaporian or Na Zdrowie, To Your Health in Polish, Czech and Ukranian? And, did you know that its said that in Russia, it is impolite to refuse beverages from your host and one should always partake in a toast. Not drinking is a serious handicap to doing business in Russia! Refusing to drink is unacceptable unless you give a plausible excuse. But beware, if you find yourself intoxicated, don't sign anything!

The Membership Committee is happy to announce that the reinstatement of Carl Roberts-Alexandrov. Carl is the Director of Operation Behavioral Health for CDPHP and a 1996 graduate of the State University at Albany. He first joined the Club in 2008 and, after a brief hiatus, requested reinstatement of his membership. Welcome back!
