POOTLE SERVER Pootle stands for PO based Online Translation/Localization Engine.

Pootle in addition to being a free software is an online translation management tool with translation interface. It is written in Python using the Django framenwork. It allows crowd-sourced translations, and allows volunteer contribution and also provides statistics on the work. It is built using the APIs of the Translate Toolkit and Django framework. It is primarily intended for free software translationand its focus is on the localization of an application's graphical user interface rather than document translation. This is done by manipulating translation files using Translate Toolkit. The Translate Toolkit also offers offline features. It enhances existing processes rather than replace them. It works with version control tools to allow changes directly to the main repository. The various roles in the translation process are: displays statistics for body of translations hosted by server. Users can use suggestion mode to make translation suggestions and corrections for later review ie it acts as a translation specific bug reporting system. Allows online translation with various online translators Manages workflow of translation when translation is done using offline tools. Main features include: terminologies extraction (based on term frequency) tranlation memory-created by offline tool Machine translation through online sources gloassary management and matching-live global glossary or glossary per project Alternative source language-view translations from a third language during translating goal creating and user management-set goals and add users to ggoals Statistics-word count and string statistics Suggestions - allow suggestions to be made allowing outside participation and bug reporting Version control - update from or commit directly to upstream version control systems User management - assign various rights to users Translation interface - perform online translation and review Checks - performs over 40 checks on translation quality multiple file formats Usage: used by OpenOffice.org One Laptop per Child's Learning Environment project. Verbatim project which builds infrastructure for Mozilla projects.

Features that Pootle Server lacks: Mark ownership of files on download: the file/file set that is downloaded should be marked with time stamp as well as who has the file to make coordination of offline files/work easy. Download/Upload fileset as opposed to a single file Details on who has the file should be availabe as well as when. Markings Each file should have the following marks: Lent out, to be reviewed, to be tested, Ok Each message should have the following marks:Suggestion, to be reviewed, to be tested, Ok

SVN capabilities :the pootle server should have a easy way for a team coordinator (also committer) to refresh the database from SVN and an easy way to commit file changes (using the committer userId) The review feature must include two extensions: Possibility to ignore violation Check word/term for consistency

LAUNCHPAD Launchpad is a web application and website that allows users to develop and maintain software, mainly open sourced software. It is developed and maintained by Canonical Ltd. It's source code is released under Affero General Public License. Translations is a component of launchpad, it is a site that allows localization of applications into different human languages. Launchpad translations provide crowd-sourced translations for the software so the rich the community the better the translations Features: simple web based translation and review GNU get text support automatic suggestions open to everyone with a launchpad account but subject to permissions I.e, open, partly restricted or structured and closed. Supports open standards in choosing file formats Import and export GetText files - pot, po and mo - for offline as well as online translation. You can also import translations in Mozillas XPI format. Point and Click Suggestions from library of translated strings Concurrent translations.

Usage:

Ubuntu Linux Mint Gnome Mplayer Drizzle Totally Wired Rasberrrymem-client Tivion Agenda Fala Scilab etc are some of the 1732 current projects which can be accessed on https://translations.launchpad.net/translations/+products-with-translations Disadvantages: Maintainer is needed to push and pull po files to Git and back when releasing. Site is slow at times often has non-current strings but current client is generally more stable than GIT. Advise: since GIT patches are more consistent and there are more translations in launchpad, GIT patches should download po files from launchpad, update strings to GIT, translate, upload work to launchpad and also commit in GIT.
