Job Chapters 38-42 (God Speaks)

Intro.: The Pearl of great Price. Matthew 13:45-46 Read: Job chapter 38-42 How did we get here? In the opening scene of chapter one Job is described as a blameless, upright and God fearing man who turned away from evil. He was also the riches/greatest man in the East. He had an abundance of livestock, and servants. He also had a large family with seven sons and three daughters. Then there was the day When Satan came to present himself before the Lord. He asked for permission to afflict Job because he accused Job of self-centered worship. He was allowed to take away everything that Job owned and even allowed to kill his children. He was also allowed to afflict Jobs health

Jobs response: Initially a response of praise and worship It later became a voice of complaint, contempt and criticism of God. Then there were His friends

Why? What was Gods purpose in all of this? Was this God trying to prove a point to Satan? No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Satan wanted to attack Job anyway; God simply seized the opportunity to accomplish His greater will.

Ultimately Gods love for Job prompted Him to give Job a gift that Job could never purchase with all of His wealth

Job chapter 38 God Speaks Read 38:1-41 God speaks to Job from a storm Compare to Gods interaction with Moses on Mt. Sinai (Exodus 19) and with Elijah (1st Kings 19) Gods first statement sums up His message to Job, Who is this that darkens counsel by Words without knowledge? o What was God asking? Who is this talking about me who doesnt know Me well enough to do so. o To darken counsel me to misrepresent God. Job was supposed to glorify God by the way he responded during his trial. Instead he questioned God and bemoaned ever being born. God now challenges Jobs knowledge in key areas: (Some of these areas address comments made by Job) Gods creation of the earth Gods control of the seas Compare to Jesus control of the raging sea Matt 8:23-27 Gods control of the constellations in the heavens o Great Bear Ursa Major Gods control over the weather consider 1st Kings 17 Gods control over the animal kingdom o God illustrates how intimately He is involved with nature Just imagine how intimately He is involved in the lives of His children!!!! o God also illustrates how little Job knows about nature which is all around him. Job chapter 40-41 God continues Job tries to roll back His comments, but it is too late. Job had questioned the justice of God and God answers Jobs accusation.

Remember the original question of why did God allow this to happen to Job? Points to Ponder: Gods desire is always to give us more of Himself. In this case God had given Job almost everything earthly possible; what if God wanted to give Job something he could not buy? God wanted to give Job a closer relationship with Himself by way of more knowledge of who He is. God will often accomplish this thru a very painful experience What is the benefit WIFM in knowing personally/intimately God? It leads to a life without fear: Consider Jobs comments in chapter 3. o Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. o Psalm 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation-- whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life-- of whom shall I be afraid? o Psalm 118:6 The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? o 2 Timothy 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. o Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." o Psalm 56:3-4 When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me? o Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

o 1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. It leads to the most product life we can live for the Lord

Job chapter 42 Job repents Finally Job realizes what God has been trying to do all along to increase Jobs knowledge of Himself. Revisit the Trail of a Trial
