Hispanic Art Web Quest

Level: 7-8th grade

Introduction:
We are going to transform this classroom into an amazing art gallery. The class will split
into assigned teams and work together to find some of the best pieces of art from Spanish
Speaking countries in order to fill our gallery full of art. Every group must work hard in
order to make our gallery amazing.

Task:
Students will work in groups of three in order to complete this task. Each group will
serve as a committee that will be in charge of researching one artist and reporting back to
the group which works of art for that artist will be included in our exhibit. Each
committee will have a committee chair, a secretary and spokesperson. The committee
chair is responsible for monitoring the working being done in the class and making sure
that all deadlines are met. The committee secretary is responsible for writing the
information that the group finds. The committee spokesperson is responsible for
reporting their findings to the group. All three members of the group will work together
to find information about their artist. Each member should choose one work of art to
include in our exhibit.

List of suggested artists:

• El Greco
• Fernando Botero
• Salvador Dali
• Francisco Goya
• Frida Kahlo
• Pablo Picasso
• Diego Riviera
• Diego Velazquez

Process:
1. Students will first decide which role in the group they will take: Chair, Secretary,
or Spokesperson.
2. Each member of the group will select one work of art by the group’s artist to
include in the exhibit and a reason why that work was chosen. Each member
should include the following information in Spanish with a picture of the work of
art they have chosen.
a. ¿Cuál es el título de la obra?
b. ¿Cuándo hizo la obra el artista?
c. Describe la moda (mood) de la obra (triste, felíz, tranquila, apacionada).
d. Describe la obra. Incluye 4 adjetivos.
3. Each group will complete the following written assignment. This will be typed by
the committee secretary but the group as a whole will work together to find the
information to include.
a. Each group will write a short paper on their artist. The first paragraph will
be written in Spanish and contain the following information:
i. ¿Cómo se llama el/la artista?
ii. ¿De dónde es?
iii. ¿Qué tipo de artista es (pinto, escultor, o los dos)?
iv. ¿Cómo se llama las obras (works) del artista?
v. ¿Está vivo o muerto el artista?
vi. ¿Cuándo nació y cuándo murió (si está muerto)?
b. The second paragraph will be written in English and contain the following
information:
i. What political or historical events took place during the life of this
artist?
ii. What influenced or inspired the work of this artist?
iii. At least one interesting event from his/her life.
4. Each group will share its information with the class as a whole through a report
given by the committee spokesperson.

Conclusion:
We have worked hard to create the art gallery that our classroom has become. Every
person had to work individually and as a group to make it happen. We can not enjoy the
art works of many different artists from many Spanish speaking countries. The final step
is to take a tour of our art gallery and learn from the experts on these works of art.
