Leopards (Panthera Pardus) are the smallest of the big cats. They have short legs and a long body. They have massive skulls and strong, powerful jaws. Their fur is covered with small rosettes which it uses as camouflage when hunting its prey. They are adaptable creatures and can survive in hot tropical rainforests, deserts, savannahs, or on cold mountainsides. This has helped them survive the loss of habitat due to human settlement. They are found in sub-Saharan Africa, central Asia, India and China. Leopards are excellent climbers and also good swimmers. They drag their leftover food up into the trees to keep it away from other scavengers. Their diet consists of deer, antelope and pigs but they also eat fish and reptiles. Leopards are solitary creatures and often spend the day hidden in the trees. If a leopard is disturbed or angry they will growl and spit at their enemies but will purr when they are happy. A female leopard will have between 2 4 cubs in her litter. The cubs are born blind and will open their eyes five to nine days after birth. At the age of three months they start to go on hunts with their mother. At one year old the cubs are almost ready to look after themselves but will remain with their mother for about two years.
