Brochure
Description: A two-sided (duplex) folding brochure. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop Date: July 13, 2013 Course: Comm 130 Section 1 Instructor: Eric Lybbert Objectives: -Learn to print duplex documents -Learn to conceptualize a folding duplex handout Process: I set up a tri-fold brochure in InDesign. I wanted a fun, unique feel to the brochure in order to truly showcase what the business is about. I then proceeded to create large colored rectangles to place into the background of my front page as well as the front flap. I put a black bar across the bottom of the page to create flow and tie the three pages together. I left the back page white to add contrast. I chose three icons to represent photography, video, and graphic design. I repeated the logo twice on the brochure as well as the three icons. Another element of repetition I used was circles. I aligned the three circles on the inside of the brochure and used them as focal points for each section. For the image of the boy and the girl snuggling in a boat, I used the quick selection tool in Adobe Photoshop to remove the background image. I then proceeded to use the refine mask option to create smooth edges, add contrast, feather, shift the edge, and make the overall cut out look better. Afterwards, I placed the picture of the two in the boat into InDesign where I used the text wrap option to wrap my text around the alpha channel of the image. I created the logo in Illustrator by combining text with the three vector icons I found online. I then brought the logo over to InDesign where I better aligned each individual element.

event aD
Description: You will use your scanned image to create an event ad that will promote a fundraiser of your choice for the Chamber of Commerce. The amazing, hidden design features of Microsoft Word may surprise you. Even though it is a bit more cumbersome to design with Word, you can still replicate most design functions with this versatile word processor. The nice part is that this common office program is available almost anywhere. Be sure to watch the video tutorial and read the written tutorial in the Visual Media Course Manual. Program/Tools Used: Microsoft Word Date: May 18, 2013 Course: Comm 130 Section 1 Instructor: Eric Lybbert Objectives: - Design using Microsoft Word - Learn to scan in quality images - Create and edit images in Word Process: David Archuleta is a pretty popular singer who will draw an extremely large crowd for this fundraiser. I used alignment to keep a crisp, clean look. I also used the black boxes with white writing to get some contrast going. David Archuleta's "colors" for his first album were black, red and white, so I thought it gave a very appropriate feel to the poster. I used Archuleta's photo to create flow on the page. He is looking towards the text, and the rest of the text shuffles back and forth down the page to keep the audience reading. I also gave it a shadow so that it would have a 3D effect. I grouped liked information together so the audience will be able to find exactly what they're looking for. I used repetitious font patterns as well as the alternating black and white boxes.

Business Card
Description: Create a new logo, not one that was used in the last project, then design a business card. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator Date: May 15, 2013 Course: Comm 130 Section 1 Instructor: Eric Lybbert Objectives: - Create business card using one of the original logos - Learn to work with white space in a small area - Convey information in a small space Process: I wanted to create a clapperboard that film directors use! I started out with making black rectangles. I then created white rectangles and reshaped them to go diagonally. I spaced them apart and outlined them so they looked on their own. I also put a line down the center to give the appearance that you could open up the clapper. Every clapper needs a hinge, so I created that with the pen tool. I used the blob tool for touch ups. I gave the hinge some silver screws on it as well. Written on every clapper board, there is different information. So, I used the space to present the logo, my name, number, email, and address. I spaced them out evenly and divided them white lines. I felt that the white and black had a very nice contrast to it. I created the film reel by making circles! I used the eraser tool in order to cut out circles inside the circle. I placed a darker circle behind that circle to look like the actual reel of film. With the pen tool and blob tool, I created a little bit of film that rolls out and outlined it. The whole business card has a nice diagonal flow to the bottom left.

Flier
Description: Your employer puts you in charge of a news flier. He gives you the information, a logo and one image to use. He asks you to create a new layout that will be attractive and more inviting to read. Now you will use the design principles to arrange the image, text, and logo. Follow the instruction guide in your course manual and check your flier with the evaluation form. Programs/ Tools used: Adobe InDesign Date: May 11, 2013 Course: Comm 130 Section 1 Instructor: Eric Lybbert Objectives: - Learn the basics of InDesign - Practice good use of P-A-R-C-F Process: As I began to sketch out different ideas for the poster, I really liked the transparent background look for behind the title; it brought more attention to the top half of the flier. I tried a bunch of different ideas that could go along with this look, and finally came to the final product. I wanted the font to be appealing to new graduates, so I downloaded a fresh looking one for the title. The thin but all caps sans serif title font contrasted well with the thicker slab serif style font. The thick black box behind the text provided for great contrast as well really made it pop. I exhibited repetition with the fonts I used and where I used them and also by using the same picture as a background and as a regular image. Repetition can again be found with the bold, black boxes. Like ideas are in close proximity with one another. Everything on the page is also correctly aligned with something else on the page. I believe the flyer has a good flow to it and allows for the audience to capture many of the important details at a glance.

Logos
Description: Three logo variations for the same company. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator Date: June 8, 2013 Course: Comm 130 Section 1 Instructor: Eric Lybbert Objectives: -Create images and logos without images that have already been created -Learn to use the Pen Tool -Employ creativity for different logos Process: I used the blob tool to write out the word "chosen" in the first logo. The bold contrast it added was something I particularly loved. I added an outline to it and made it aqua. I also used a charcoal feather stroke under the paint tool to add a line underneath the text. I ended up adding a dash of aqua to this as well to tie it all in. In the second logo, I added a light and tight drop shadow to the word "chosen". I also added a sequence of stars that show the different cascading colors of blue, and I added a rough charcoal edge to each star. I made each star smaller than the first and used the "bring to front" tool to have each overlapping the first. I like the flow that the stars created. I also used the charcoal feather stroke with the paint tool underneath this logo, because I just like that extra touch it adds. In the final logo, I created a rectangle and filled it with a scribble effect. I then used white type to go over it. I used contrasting fonts between "the" and "chosen" to really add an emphasis to the word "chosen". I also left the word "contrast" out of the scribble effect rectangle to provide even more contrast and a nice focal point. I carefully aligned each logo to make them look professional and sharp.

sTationery
Description: Create a new logo, not one that was used in the last project, then design a business card and letterhead Programs/Tools Used: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator Date: June 15, 2013 Course: Comm 130 Section 1 Instructor: Eric Lybbert Objectives: - Create stationary with enough space for the letter - Understand the appropriate use of the watermark as applicable Process: For the letterhead, I used the same font for "The Chosen Productions" that I used in the business card. I felt like it had a nice contrast with the body font. I wanted to go with the same clapperboard feel that I did for the business card. So, I created two black rectangles for the top and the bottom of the paper. At the bottom, I evenly spaced out the contact info and centered it on the page. I sincerely thought it looked the best that way, even though I tried aligning it differently. I liked the bold, fancy floral stem line and thought it made the heading look very professional. I used it to underline my logo up top. I then used the film reel for repetition and created a watermark at 3%.

Imaging
Description: A personally taken photograph that has been edited using Photoshop. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop Date: May 24, 2013 Course: Comm 130 Section 1 Intstructor: Eric Lybbert Objectives: - Learn basic photography skills - Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it - Size and crop the image - Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation levels - Use selection tool to isolate part of the image - Desaturate the selected portion of image - Use a filter or colorize a portion of image Process: I took the original picture and cropped it to the required 6x6 size and also changed the resolution to 150. I went by the rule of 3rds and took the picture from being centered to being off-centered and to the upper left. I then used the quick selection tool to desaturate the entire background of the image. I left the two rings saturated and played with their contrast. I then added a grain filter to the background of the image.

Web Page
Description: A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo. Programs/Tools Used: TextWrangler & Photoshop Date: June 30, 2013 Course: Comm 130 Section 1 Intstructor: Eric Lybbert Objectives: - Learn HTML basics - Undertstand how HTML translates visually Process: In class, I learned how to make HTML and CSS. I learned how to write them properly. To create my webpage project, I used only the program called TextWrangler. I sized down my pre-made logo to the correct size and created a link for it on my HTML page. I proceeded to write about the process of creating my logo and how it appeals to my audience. I typed a total of 300 words. To make the page look pretty, I linked a pre-made CSS document to the HTML document. I switched around all of the colors and fonts so that they would match and correlate with my logo. I also added some backup fonts just in case the viewers browser didnt have these fonts. I have never, ever used HTML or CSS before, but I found it very insightful and helpful!

montage
Description: You are in charge of creating a new and fresh inspirational poster using a composite of images and type. A photo montage involves the blending of two or more images with text. You will create an inspirational montage by using a layer mask to blend images. You may use your own photos or gather some from the internet. Try some of the websites under the additional learning heading. Look over the assignment examples, then watch the video tutorials for tips on how to blend images and perform more advanced editing effects in Adobe Photoshop. Remember to write down your steps as you work, include this process on the final evaluation form. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop Date: June 1, 2013 Course: Comm 130 Section 1 Instructor: Eric Lybbert Process: I cropped the background image to 8.511. I selected the sun image, drug it to the background, and added a mask to it. With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard image edges. With a larger black brush at 30% opacity and 30% flow, I blended the sun face into the real sun. I added a quote with two contrasting fonts. To make them more contrasting, I added a layer style (soft, black shadow) to make the text more legible. I then proceeded to lighten the script font more than the regular font to really make certain words stand out. I also added a drop shadow to the text to make it stand out more. I then used the filter "lens flare" to add a flare from the sun.
