Experimental Design Diagrams Name HR

A. Question How does the wing shape effect the rockets' flight pattern.
B. Hypotheses The wing is more aerodynamic and rounded, then the rocket will fly father
because since it's rounded, the wind will roll off easier and being thinner, there won't be
as much drag.

Control

C. List 5 controlled variables. Size of bottles, type of cardboard, how much water in the nose
and body of the rocket, number of wings, air pressure and angle of launch
1. Nose water – 100 ml
2. Body water – 400 ml
3. General Wing Size – 10x5
4. Control Wing Shape – Right Triangle
5. Angle of Launch - 30º
D. List the materials needed for the experiment. Bottles, duct tape, cardboard
E. Write out a step by step procedure for carrying out the experiment.
*Someone should be able to repeat your experiment from your procedure.

1. Obtain three 2 liters bottles and three 20 oz bottles, duct tape and cardboard with
cutting utensils
2. cut out various shapes from the cardboard in threes (Use “Control” shape is best)
3. duct tape both bottles end to end
4. duct tape one set of 3 wings equally spaced out onto the bottle
5. in the 20 oz bottles, fill with water 100 ml and cap
6. in the 2 liter bottles, fill with water 200 ml and do NOT cap
7. set launch angle at 30º
8. make sure 2 liter bottle is on the bottom onto said launch “pad” with clamps on tightly
9. turn air pressure on briefly then turn off
10. set back, yell “LAUNCH” and let pull back the rope connected to the clamp holding the
bottled rocket with said water and air
pressure. Wing Shape vs. Air
F. Graph your data on Excel. (Use the graphing 90
guidelines.) 80

G. Write a conclusion. 60
1. Does your data support your hypothesis?
50
Why or why not? (Describe by referring to

your data! Be sure you talk about your data (Meters)
and graph.) 30

2. What changes would you make if you did 20

the experiment again and why? (Be 10

Shapes

Our hypotheses was incorrect because a few of

our various shapes were much more aerodynamically built than the control shape, which
was the right triangle. However, it was the control variable that went the farthest on
average.
Changes that could be made to improve our data would possibly be in relation to
changing anything would be our time and precision into building said rocket.
