A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME Stephen Hawking, one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists in history, wr ote the modern

classic A Brief History of Time to help non-scientists understand fundamental questions of physics and our existence: where did the universe come from? How and why did it begin? Will it come to an end, and if so, how? Hawking attempts to deal with these questions (and where we might look for answers) usi ng a minimum of technical jargon. Among the topics gracefully covered are gravit y, black holes, the Big Bang, the nature of time and physicists' search for a gr and unifying theory. This is deep science; the concepts are so vast (or so tiny) that they cause mental vertigo while reading, and one can't help but marvel at Hawking's ability to synthesize this difficult subject for people not used to th inking about things like alternate dimensions. The journey is certainly worth ta king for as Hawking says, the reward of understanding the universe may be a glim pse of "the mind of God". --Therese Littleton, Amazon.com COSMIC TIME TRAVEL Reveals the latest scientific developments in the field of time travel, from Ein stein's space-time theories to time tunnels and black holes. FASTER THAN LIGHT Almost every conceivable way to exceed light speed has been debunked here. The a uthor does however leave open tantalizing options that still have some credibili ty. THE NATURE OF SPACE AND TIME Einstein said that the most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible. But was he right? Can the quantum theory of fields and Einst ein's general theory of relativity, the two most accurate and successful theorie s in all of physics, be united in a single quantum theory of gravity? Can quantu m and cosmos ever be combined? On this issue, two of the world's most famous phy sicists - Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose disagree. Here they explain their p ositions in a work based on six lectures with a final debate, all originally pre sented at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge. How could quantum gravity, a theory that could explain the earlie r moments of the big bang and the physics of the enigmatic objects known as blac k holes, be constructed? Why does our patch of the universe look just as Einstei n predicted, with no hint of quantum effects in sight? What strange quantum proc esses can cause black holes to evaporate, and what happens to all the informatio n that they swallow? Why does time go forward, not backward? In this book, the t wo opponents touch on all these questions. Penrose, like Einstein, refuses to be lieve that quantum mechanics is a final theory. Hawking thinks otherwise, and ar gues that general relativity simply cannot account for how the universe began. O nly a quantum theory of gravity, coupled with the no-boundary hypothesis, can ev er hope to explain adequately what little we can observe about our universe. Pen rose, playing the realist to Hawking's positivist, thinks that the universe is u nbounded and will expand forever. The universe can be understood, he argues, in terms of the geometry of light cones, the compression and distortion of spacetim e, and by the use of twistor theory. With the final debate, the reader will come to realise how much Hawking and Penrose diverge in their opinions of the ultima te quest to combine quantum mechanics and relativity, and how differently they h ave tried to comprehend the incomprehensible.

PHYSICS OF STAR TREK An easy-to-understand introduction to the complexities of today and tomorrow's p hysics. The author assess what is and what is not actually possible according to the laws of physics, among all the weird and wonderful things that Kirk, Spock and Scottie got up to in their parallel universe. TIME MACHINES A collection of stories details the attractions of time-travel and how it is a p revalent subject in both the science fiction and literary fiction genres, and in cludes works by such authors as Isaac Asimov and Jack Finney. TIME TRAVEL A NEW PERSPECTIVE

Scattered throughout the world are objects that could not possibly belong to the time period in which they were found. A human footprint contemporary with the d inosaurs? The skeletal remains of men and women long before humanity appeared on the planet? This text shows how time travel is not only theoretically possible, but that the future generations may already be engaged in it. Readers can weigh up the evidence for them and take part in the unique programme, based on esoter ic techniques and on the findings of parapsychology and quantum physics, which e nables them to structure their own group investigation into a form of vivid ment al time travel. TIME TRAVEL HELP FOR WRITERS

Explores the theories of relativity and the science behind time travel to help w riters of science fiction create their stories THE TIME TRAVEL HANDBOOK Discusses the theories of time travel and teleportation and examines actual expe riments, the claims of time travelling individuals, and patents for time travel and teleportation devices.
