SOLUTION
Question 1 You and your friends visited the Gunung Lambak in Kluang . While climbing , you drop a ten cents coin of the cliff . You observe the distance the coin fall is 16 cm in the first second , 48 cm the next second , 80 cm the third second , and so on. (a) Referring to the first three measurement : I. What is the difference between the 2nd meaurement and the 1st measurement , the 3rd measurement and the 2nd measurement ? What is the ratio of the 2nd measurement and the 1st measurement , the ratio the 3rd measurement and the 2nd measurement ? Base on (1) and (2) , what is conclusion ?

II.

III.

(b) What is the total distance the coin will fall in 6 seconds ? a) i) Difference 2nd- 1st = 48-16 = 32 3rd 2nd = 60-48 = 32 Ratio 2nd / 1st = 48/16 = 3 3rd / 2nd = 60/48 = 5/4

ii)

iii)

Conclusion

iv) Based on the question, Arithmethic Progression will be used in order to solve this question. This is due to the same common difference between the 2nd and 1st 3rd and 2nd measurement.

b)

Sn = n/2[2a+(n-1)d] = 6/2[2*16+(6-1)32] = 3[32+5*32] = 3[32+160] = 3[192] = 576 cm

Question 2 You are given a task to measure the angles in several geometric figures. From your measurement that you did, you find out that the sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 180, of a quadrilateral is 360 and of apentagon is 540.

III.

(b) Find the sum of the interior angles of a dedecagon(12 sides) (a)(i)

First angle = 180 Second angle = 360 Third angle = 540 To define the common difference, we must use the formulae, (2nd term)-(1st term)=(3rd term)-(2nd term) 360-180=540-360 180=180 (ii) To define the common ratio we must use the formulae, (2nd term/1stterm)=(3rd term/2nd term) 360/180=540/360 2=2 (iii) Sum of the interior angle increases when the sides of geometric figures increases. After stdying the problems, we define use the Arithmetic solutionfor this problem.

(b) 1st term = 3 sides 2 term = 4sides 3 term = 5 sides ? term = 12 sides New common difference and first term, a= 3, d=4-3 =1

Tn= a+(n-1)d 12=3+(n-1)1 12=3+n-1 12=2+n 10=n 10 term = 12 sides a=180, d=180 Tn=a+(n-1)d T10=180+(10-1)(180) =180+(9)(180) =1800 Term 10th =1800/12 sides =1800

Question 3 After coming back from the cross country program in Sungai Muar you hurt your knee. The university doctor advises you to return to your training program slowly. He suggest you run slowly for 12 minutes each day for the first week. Each week thereafter, he suggests that you increase that time by 6 minutes per day. (a) i. Referring to the first three weeks of the training;

What is the difference between the time spend for second week and first week, the third week and second week? ii. What is the ration of the time spend for the second week and the first week, the third week and the second week? iii. Base on (i) and (ii), what is your conclusion? (b) How many week will it be before you are up to jogging 60 minutes per day?

(d = 2nd 1st)

1st week = 12 m 2nd week = 18 m 1st term for 1st week = 12 x 7 =84 2nd term for 2nd week =18 x 7 =126 Different between 2nd term and 1st term = 126 84 =42 2nd week =18 m (12 + 6) 3rd week= 24 m (18 + 6) 2nd term for 2nd week = 18 x 7 = 126 m 3rd term for 3rd week = 24 x 7 = 168 m Different between 3rd term and 2nd term = 168 126 =42 (ii) 2nd term for 2nd week = 18 x 7 = 126 1st term for 1st week = 12 x 7 =84 Ratio between 2nd term and 1st term = 126/84 = 3/2 = 3:2 3rd term for 3rd week = 24 x 7 = 168 2nd term for 2nd week = 18 x 7 = 126 Ratio between 3rd term and 2nd term = 168/126 = 4/3 = 4:3

(iii) - the different between 2nd week with 1st week and 3rd week with 2nd week are same. -the ratio between 2nd week with 1st week and 3rd week with 2nd week are not same. -so,we decide to use arithmetic solution to solve this problem. (b). Tn = a+(n 1)d Tn = 12 + (n 1)(6) 60 = 12 + 6n 6 6n = 54 n=9

Question 4 A display of cans on a grocery shelf consists of 20 cans on the bottom, 18 cans in the next row, 16 cans in the next row, and so on, until the top row has 4 cans. a) Referring to the first three rows : i) ii) iii) What is the difference between the number of can in the 2nd row and the 1st row, the 3rd and the 2nd row? What is the ratio of the number of can in the 2nd row and the 1st row , the 3rd row and the 2nd row ? The conclusion from question (a)(i) and (a)(ii) :

b) How many cans , in total , are in the display ? (a) (i)For 2nd row : Tn = a + ( n 1 ) d T2 = 4 + ( 2 1 ) 2 =4+(2) =6 For 3rd row : Tn = a + ( n 1 ) d a=4,n=3,d=2 , a = 4 , n = 2 , d = 20 18 = 2

T3 = 4 + ( 4 -1 ) 2= 8 Difference between the number of can : 2nd row and 1st row : 2nd row = 6 =64 =2 3rd row and 2nd row : 3rd row = 8 =86 =2 (ii) Solution : Ratio for 2nd row and 1st row : 1st : 2nd = 4 = 2 : 6 : 3 , 2nd row = 6 , 1st row = 4
