About the Product
The Vigilant ViewStation is an intuitive, easy-to-operate event-analysis application for querying, investigating and extracting digital information. Enabling detailed, intelligent analysis of critical events, the Vigilant ViewStation allows both live and immediate playback video from any Vigilant server to any point in the network.

About this Manual


This manual is intended for use by the Vigilant ViewStation operator. It describes how to use the Vigilant ViewStation system on a day-to-day basis, to achieve optimal results.

Purpose
This manual guides the users of the Vigilant surveillance center through the day to day use of the Vigilant ViewStation application.

Intended Audience
This manual is intended for the users and system administrator of the Vigilant's ViewStation.

Introduction
The Vigilant ViewStation is an intuitive, easy-to-operate event-analysis application for querying, investigating and extracting digital information. Enabling detailed, intelligent analysis of critical events, the Vigilant ViewStation allows both live and immediate playback video from any Vigilant server to any point in the network. Vigilant ViewStation is fully compatible with Vigilants NetView IP control center, NetStream/NetVR IP video servers, SmartGuard intelligent video content analysis as well as Vigilants DVR solutions.

Vigilant ViewStation Highlights

High resolution 4CIF real-time video incorporated with FM quality audio. Immediate video access to any point on the stream without delay. Fine-tune event-searches based on date and time. Synchronized playback of four different audio and video channels. Sherlock object tracking provides simultaneous scanning of multiple objects. Forward/backward video playback. PTZ support allows users to pan, tilt and zoom camera while watching live video. Camera grouping increases video balancing and storage distribution between servers. Adjustable frame rates from 1fps to 30fps. Flexible administration and configuration enables intuitive channel definition, detectors and video attributes settings. Video authentication capabilities.

About this Manual

This manual is intended for use by the Vigilant ViewStation operator. It describes how to use the Vigilant ViewStation system on a day-to-day basis, to achieve optimal results. This manual is divided into the following parts:

Getting Started
2.1 Entering the Vigilant ViewStation
To enter the Vigilant ViewStation: 1. Switch on the computer. The system automatically powers up and logs on to the network. Note: If the computer is on, but the Vigilant application has been closed, double-click the Vigilant ViewStation icon desktop to open it. on the 2. 3. In the User name field, enter the administrator user name (default value is Admin). 4. In the Password field, enter the administrator password (default value is Admin). If an incorrect name or password is entered, the following error message is displayed:

If three unsuccessful attempts to log in are made, the following message is displayed, and the Login window closes:

Note: Only the Administrator can change passwords.

5. Press Login to enter, or Cancel to exit the login process. 6. While the Vigilant ViewStation is loading, the Vigilant Splash screen is displayed:

7. After a few seconds, the Vigilant ViewStation Main Screen is displayed.

2.1.1 The Time Synchronizer


In addition to the Vigilant ViewStation, the Time Synchronizer (an automatic service) is automatically loaded and run in the background. The Time Synchronizer icon is shown in the system tray on the main Windows screen.

The Time Synchronizer is used to constantly synchronize the current time from the Vigilant ViewStation with the time on the Vigilant server. The time clock on the ViewStation and the server are synchronized using the server time as the base. Synchronization occurs each time you log into the ViewStation computer, and every 80 minutes while in continuous operation mode.

The Vigilant Main Screen is divided into five areas as shown above: Palette Area (Main and Secondary), Video Display Area, Date and Time Area, and Main Toolbar.

In each area, several operations can be performed. See the relevant sections in this manual.

2.2.2 Video Display Area


The Video Display Area contains either one or four video windows. In each window, a live, playback or event playback video may be viewed. The Video Display can also contain the Video Options window that enables you to lock the video at a certain frame or export the video files to different media, as described on page 312.

2.2.3 Date and Time Area


In the bottom left corner of the screen, the current date and time is constantly displayed.

2.2.4 Main Toolbar


The Vigilant Main toolbar located at the top of the Vigilant Main Screen is used to quickly and easily access Vigilants most common features.

Description
Cameras, used to display the cameras that are defined in the system by server or by name. The cameras are displayed in the Main Palette Area. See The Cameras Panel on page 3-2 for details. Events, used to display the latest events that have occurred in the system, by camera or by time. In addition, new event queries can be defined from this option, and their results can be viewed from this option. See Event Handling on page 4-2 for details. Lock, used to unlock selected video files and to view locked video files. These files are removed from the normal FIFO (First In/First Out) deletion cycle. See Viewing Locked Videos on page 4-26 for details. Sherlock, used to search a recorded video for movement of a specific object. See What is Sherlock? on page 4-21 for details.

PTZ, used to view live video with a PTZ-enabled camera. See Using Volume, used to set the playback and line level of each of the video windows. See Using Volume Control on page 4-1 for details. Sync, used to synchronize the playback of multiple cameras. See

System, used to set camera properties, and define user parameters. This button is only enabled for authorized users. For more information, refer to the Vigilant Administrators manual. Help, used to access the Vigilant online help system. Exit, used to exit the Vigilant ViewStation application.

2.3

Exiting the Vigilant ViewStation

To exit the Vigilant ViewStation: 1. From the main toolbar, click the Exit icon. The following dialog box is displayed:

2. Click OK to exit the Vigilant ViewStation application or Cancel to remain within the Vigilant ViewStation application.

Viewing Video
Vigilant ViewStation Main screen contains four video windows. Each window can display video that is live, playback, or playback with events. This chapter is divided into four main sections:

The Cameras Panel, page 3-2. The Cameras panel displays the servers and cameras that are defined in the system. Viewing Live Video, page 3-4. Live video displays exactly what the selected camera is capturing at the current moment. Exporting the Video/Current Frame, page 3-15. A playback video is a prerecorded video that has been previously captured by the camera and saved on the hard drive or in the tape library.

Viewing Event Playback Video, page 3-34. A playback video, described above, may have events marked on it manually or automatically. These events can be used to quickly access segments of interest in the video during playback.

3.1

The Cameras Panel

The Cameras panel is displayed in the Main Palette Area and by default, is used to display the servers and cameras that are defined in the system. Once the administrator has grouped the cameras logically, the cameras can be displayed either by group or by name, by selecting the appropriate tab.

Viewing Live Video

To view live video: 1. From the Cameras Panel, click the Show Live icon .

2. Select a window in which to display the live video by doing one of the following:

Drag the required camera icon from the Main Palette Area (when the

cameras are displayed), and drop it into one of the four video windows. - OR the live video. The windows are selected in clockwise order, as shown below:

3.2.1 Video Title


The Video title at the top of the video window comprises the following items:

Previous Video button - Moves to the previous video in memory that was displayed in this window. Each video window saves the links to the last ten videos viewed in its window, both in live and playback mode.

History combo box - Shows the current camera name and server. Click on the video name or down arrow to display a list of the last ten videos shown in this window. The video names are displayed in reverse chronological order, meaning that the most recent video is displayed at the bottom of the list. A sample Channel Name combo box is shown below:

Each video window saves the links to the last ten videos viewed in its window, both in live and playback mode. Video Status - Revise the settings once they have been in operation for one week. Make any final adjustments. Large Screen button - Switches the current video to large screen mode.

3.2.2 Video Playback Bar


During live video, the Video Playback Bar is displayed at the bottom of the video window. The following three buttons are enabled. The remaining buttons are disabled.

Stop, used to stop the video. Rewind 1 minute, used to automatically rewind the video by one minute, and start playing in playback mode. Load Video, used to open the Video Selection Dialog Box (see Figure 3-34: Video Selection Dialog Box, on page 3-23) to play a playback, event playback

or live video from the same camera.

3.2.3 Live Large Screen Controls


The Live Video Large Screen Mode displays the selected video in a large video window. This larger window includes all the options available in the Live Video Standard (four windows) Mode. Live Video Large Screen Mode is displayed by clicking the Large Screen button in the top right corner of each video window.

When you display a live video in Large Screen Mode (as shown in Figure 3-6: Live Video Window - Large Screen Mode), additional controls appear on the Video toolbar and on the Video Playback Bar, as described below:

Video options, allows you to lock sections of the video and export sections to different media. Note that you cannot lock or export live video. See Video Options on page 3-12 for details. Show next event, enables you to jump to the next event if an event has been selected. If no event is selected, the video jumps to the first event that appears on the playback bar in the playback video and continues playing from that point on. The event is marked in white on the video Playback Bar. Clicking again on this button jumps to the next event - the first event remains marked in yellow, and the second event in white. When you click the Show next event button while playing a live video, the video jumps to the first event on the blue bar. Full Screen, shows the video on the entire screen. To return to large screen mode, press Esc.

Description
Record Manual event, marks a manual event on the video. When you click this button, a message is displayed. A sample message is displayed below:

Figure 3-8: Record Manual Event Message Click the OK button to display the Reason dialog box. Type a description of this event and click OK. The event is marked in black on the event bar. Later when you playback this video you can jump directly to view this event by clicking on the event icon in the Playback Bar. Note: You cannot mark an event for a camera that is set to No Record.

At the bottom of the screen, the Time and Date bar is displayed.

Time Slider By default, the time slider is shown with a range of 8 hours. Click the zoom buttons to change the range. Move the slider to the left or right to change the range of time shown in the time slider. Please note that what is shown in the time slider is not reflected in the video window until you click in the blue area of the Playback Bar.

Playback Bar (indicated by the blue bar)

Description
The blue area of the Playback Bar indicates the time span for which a video is available to be played back. Click at any point on the blue area of the Playback Bar to play back the video for that time.

Press the Zoom In button to zoom in the resolution of time shown in the time slider. The largest zoom unit is one day, and a range of one week can be shown. Each click of this button will zoom in to a smaller unit of time: to 12 hours, then 8 hours, then 2 hours, then 15 minutes.

Description
to zoom out the resolution of time shown Press the Zoom Out button in the time slider. The smallest range is 15 minutes. Each click of this button will zoom out to a larger unit of time: to 2 hours, then 8 hours, then 12 hours, then 1 day. A range of one week can be shown.

3.2.4 Video Playback Bar Reverse Playback


In Large Screen Mode, the video playback bar has a reverse playback button . Clicking this button plays the video in reverse direction. This button is only active in playback mode. In live mode it is disabled.

3.2.5 Video Options


When the Video Options button is selected, from Large Screen Mode, the Video Options window is displayed in the Video area, and the video is frozen on the current frame.

Selecting the Video Section


You must first select a section of video or a single frame before performing operations on a video. To select a section of video:

1. Select Video to save a section of video, or Current frame to save the current frame.

Locking the Video


Locking the video removes the selected section of video from the FIFO deletion cycle. You can only lock a section of video, and not a current frame. To lock the video: 1. Click the Lock button. The Reason dialog box is displayed:

When you display a playback video in large screen mode (as shown in the figure above), additional controls appear on the Video toolbar and on the Video Playback Bar, as described below:

Description
Record Manual event, marks a manual event on the video. When you click this button, a message is displayed. A sample message is displayed below:

Later when you playback this video you can jump directly to view this event by clicking on the event icon in the Playback Bar. Note: You cannot mark an event for a camera that is set to No Record. Playback Speed Dial, used to speed up or slow down the video playback speed. Drag the Speed Dial to the right (clockwise) to increase video speed, or to the left (counterclockwise) to decrease video speed. While being dragged, the speed meter turns green. When stopped, it turns red. The red button in the center of the speed meter marks the default speed. The maximum speed (marked by the + sign) is 30 times the normal speed. The minimum speed (marked by the sign) is frame-by-frame, meaning that if there are 25 frames per second at default speed, you will see 25 steps for each second of play at normal speed.

Events playback videos are videos that were previously marked, either automatically or manually. To view playback video according to events: 1. Select a camera and the window to display the video, as described in Exporting the Video/Current Frame, on page 3-15. The Video Selection Dialog Box is displayed in the selected window, as shown below:

Using PTZ Control

A PTZ-enabled camera enables you to pan, tilt and zoom the camera while watching live video. Only one user at a time may control the PTZ camera. By default, after three seconds of not using the camera, the control of the camera can be passed to another user, if required.

Once you have selected the video to watch, you can move the camera to the left, right, up or down, and as well as zoom in or out. To view a video using a PTZ-enabled camera: 1. From the Main toolbar, click the PTZ button displayed in the Secondary Palette Area. . The PTZ Palette is

3. Click a selected point on the video screen, which then becomes the center of the screen. The closer the point is to the edge of the picture, the quicker the camera will change position. 4. Trace a path for the PTZ camera to follow by holding down the left mouse button and tracing a path with the mouse. The PTZ camera follows this path. When you release the left mouse button, the PTZ camera stops moving. 5. Use the scroll wheel on the mouse to zoom into or out of the picture.

3.6.2 Advanced Viewing Options


The advanced viewing options enable you to adjust and set various parameters for viewing video recorded on PTZ-enabled cameras. To select the advanced viewing options: 1. You can adjust the Iris, Focus and Zoom by clicking option to be adjusted. or next to the

Event Handling

Events in Vigilant, regardless of their type, are displayed in the Event Palette Area. In this area, two groups of events can be seen: Latest events and Query results.

4.2.1 Latest Events


Latest events are the last 100 events that have occurred in the system, including Live events. Events that have occurred in the last 30 seconds will play live video when dragged into one of the windows for playing. Different icons depending on the current status of the camera represent the latest events in the Event Palette Area.

4.2.2 What is a Query?


A query in Vigilant refers to an examination of the prerecorded events in the system according to specific criteria. The criteria are composed of the following:

Upon entry to the Main Query screen, no time limits, all events and all cameras are already selected for the query.

Time Range Specification


There are three methods to select a date and time period:

Quick: Search for events in the last <n> days or <m> hours. Use this method to perform a quick search without the need to enter many parameters. Continuous: Search for events over a specified period (days and/or hours and minutes). Daily: Search for events every day during the specified dates, between the specified times. For example, search for events every day in the month of May between 20:00 to 22:00 only.

By default, the query includes all dates and times. To specify a time range, in the Selected Time Range area, select one of these methods as described in the following sections. To select a Quick time range: 1. Clear the No Time Limits checkbox. 2. Select the Quick radio button (this is already selected as the default setting). 3. In the From fields (C), enter the date and time from which to start the search. In the To fields (D), enter the date and time at which to end the search. The default is the current date and time. For example, if you set the From fields to 29/09/2001 19:00 and the To fields to 30/09/2001 06:00, the section of video from 19:00 on 29/09/2001 until 06:00 on 30/09/2001 will be checked for events. To select a Daily time range: 1. Clear the No Time Limit checkbox. 2. Select the Daily radio button. The following fields are opened next to the radio button:

3. In the From and To fields (E), enter the start date and end dates during which to search. In the Between and And fields (F), enter the time period during which to search.

For example, if you set the From field to 29/09/2001, the To field to 30/10/2001 the Between field to 01:00 and the And field to 06:00, the section of video from 01:00 and 05:00 every day between 29/09/2001 and 30/10/2001 will be checked for events.

Event Specification
By default, the query includes all types of events. To specify the event types to be included in the query: 1. From the Selected Events area, clear the All Events checkbox, as by default, all events are selected. 2. Check one or more event types in the Events combo box. After checking, the selected events are shown in the combo box field. For example, if you check all the event types, the combo box field is shown, as follows:

Double click on a camera name or click on it and click the button. The camera name is listed in the Chosen Cameras list along with its server name. 4. To select all the cameras in a server, double click on the server name at the top of the camera tree. All the cameras that belong to the selected server are listed in the Chosen Cameras list. You can also select the server, and click .

5. To deselect a camera in the Chosen Cameras list, double click on it or click on it and click the button. The camera name is moved to the Cameras list.

Event Data
The Extra Information box is used to add information which is received from external systems such as an Access Control or Point-of-Sale. To search by event data: 1. Select the Extra Information checkbox. An empty field is displayed.

Once you have selected the specifications, you can run the query. To run the query: 1. Click the Preview button displayed. . The Query in progress dialog box is

2. The Query results are shown in the Preview window in descending server date/time order with the latest event at the top of the list, as shown in Figure 4-13: Query Results 3. Up to 2000 events can be displayed. The color of the star icon of each event shows the event type. See Event Types on page 3-35 for an explanation of the colors. The number of events found that match the query is displayed under the events list.

Note: You must carefully define your query criteria in order to obtain a reasonable number of events in the query results. If you did not obtain the desired results, go back to the Time Range Specification step on page 4-6 to define a new query and press the Preview button again to view the results.

4.2.6 Query Results


Query results are events that are listed as a result of a query that has been performed. In the query results list, all types of events are listed. To accept the query results and transfer them to the Events palette: 1. Click the OK button. The Query results are displayed in the Events palette under Query Results and the Query window is closed.

Event Notification
The following types of notification can be set for the events that appear in the Events panel:

Popup Video Whenever an event appears in the Events panel, it automatically begins playing live in the next available video playback area. The name of the event is displayed in flashing red text (see screenshot below).

Audible Alarm Sound an alarm whenever an event appears in the Events panel.

4.3

Performing a Sherlock Scan

4.3.1 What is Sherlock?


The Vigilant Sherlock feature allows you to scan recorded video forward and backward for movement or disappearance of a specific object(s). You do this by setting scan criteria and then marking one object or many objects. Up to 10 objects can be selected simultaneously. For example, you can check when a parked car was moved, when an object was taken from its current location, and so on.

4.3.2 Starting the Sherlock Scan


A Sherlock scan can be performed in Playback Large Screen mode only. To perform a scan: 1. Playback the video that you want to search through in one of the windows. 4.3.3 Specifying the Scan Criteria


The scan criteria are specified in the Sherlock panel. To specify the scan: 1. In the Event type field, select the radio button corresponding to the type of search to be performed:

Disappearance: The movement is marked as an event only if the marked


object disappears entirely from its current location. object moves from its current location.

2. The clock at the bottom of the Sherlock panel displays the current scanning time and the message In Progress is displayed, as shown below:

3. When the scan detects movement of the selected object(s), the scan stops automatically and displays the event. A message box with the date and time of the event is displayed. A sample message box is shown below. In this message box, click the Play button button to play the event. Click the Find Next to find the next event.

Synchronizing Playback

The Sync option enables you to synchronize the playback of multiple cameras with a user-defined master video. Synchronized playback enables you to view an event and its relevant surrounding area recorded by other cameras at the same time, simultaneously, allowing you to study and analyze incidents more effectively. Synchronized playback also enables you to see when a suspicious person moves to an area recorded by a different camera.

4.4.1 Viewing Synchronized Playback


In order to synchronize multiple videos, one video must be defined as the master video with which the other videos are synchronized. To view synchronized video playback: 1. From the Main toolbar, click the Sync dropdown list button .A dropdown list is displayed, showing the videos that can be selected to be the master as enabled. (These are videos that are not live, but in playback mode.)

4.5

Viewing Locked Videos

Vigilants video files are stored on a Vigilant storage unit/tape library. The system operates on a FIFO (first in, first out) deletion basis. The Lock feature gives the user the ability to lock selected video files. These files are removed from the normal FIFO cycle. A video is locked using the Video Options in the Large Screen Playback Window or from the Event List. For details, see Video Options on page 3-12.

Note: Only authorized users can lock or unlock a video. Unlocked videos are returned to the FIFO cycle and are deleted according to their location in the queue.

4.5.1 Displaying the List of Locked Videos


To display the list of locked videos: 1. From the Main toolbar, click the Lock button. The Lock Palette is displayed in the Main Palette Area.

4.6

Export Viewer

The Export Viewer is a utility that allows you to view exported videos simply and quickly, independent of the Vigilant ViewStation. Additionally, it provides you with extra information about the exported video such as Date, Time and Video duration. It also includes extra controls to assist you in viewing the exported video such as the Progress Bar, Speed Bar and Control buttons. The Export Viewer ensures that you see the exported video at its real speed, and not at a speed related to the server frame rate.

4.6.1 How to Use the Export Viewer


The Export Viewer Installation is copied to the destination directory when a video is exported from the Vigilant ViewStation to a removable device. To start the Export Viewer: 1. From the Start > Programs > Vigilant Technology > Export Utilities > Export Viewer. The Export Viewer window is displayed. 2. Double click the exported file (Filename.Mp4), The Export Viewer window is displayed and the exported file is played.

Note: The Export Viewer application supports Windows 2000-SP4, XP-SP1, and XP-SP2.

Playback Speed Dial


The playback speed dial allows you to speed up or slow down the video playback speed. Drag the Speed Dial to the right (clockwise) to increase video speed, or to the left (counterclockwise) to decrease video speed. While being dragged, the speed meter turns green. When stopped, it turns red. The red button in the center of the speed meter marks the default speed. The maximum speed (marked by the + sign) is 30 times the normal speed. The minimum speed (marked by the sign) is frame by frame, for example, if there are 25 frames per second at default speed, you will see 25 steps for each second of play at normal speed.

Video Playback Bar


The control buttons on the Playback Bar are used to control the play of the video, as shown below:

Video Verifier
5.1 Verifying Video Authenticity
Video Verifier is an external Software application that is supplied with Vigilant Systems. This application allows you to verify the authenticity of recorded video by identifying if and where an image or segment of video was altered. You can only browse and verify files that have been exported as MPEG-4 files. See Exporting the Video/Current Frame on page 3-15. Note: When you export a video and want to burn the data onto CD, ensure that you copy the Video Verifier application to the same directory as the exported video. For more information on exporting videos, see Exporting the Video/Current Frame on page 3-15.

How to Use Video Verifier

To run the Video Verifier: 1. From the Start > Programs > Vigilant Technology > Export Utilities > Video Verifier. The following opening window is displayed.

2. Once the application has downloaded, the Vigilant Video Originality Verifier window is displayed.

3. Type the pathname of the video file or click the Browse button to locate the file. The Open dialog box is displayed.

4. Select the video file and click the Open button. The verification starts automatically. The preview window displays the first frame of the video file being tested.

Description/Action

Checks the syntax of the video file. Checks that bits in the video file have not deleted or modified. Checks the time and date inside the video stream.

Starting date of the original video (UTC time). Starting time of the original video (UTC time). Ending date of the original video (UTC time). Ending time of the original video (UTC time). Video standard of the original video.

File name of the tested video file. Size of the tested video file in bytes.

Time of the test. Version of the Video Verifier application.

Note: UTC Universal Time Conversion Equal to GMT winter time (without Daylight Savings).

Burning Video to CD
6.1 Burning Video Files to CD Using Windows XP
For more information on how to export a video using the ViewStation, refer to Exporting the Video/Current Frame, page 3-15. To burn video files to CD using Windows XP: 1. Insert a new writable CD into the CD Burner. The following window is displayed:

2. Choose Open writable CD folder using Windows Explorer and click OK. The Windows Explorer window for drive D (CD burner) is displayed:

3. Browse to the video files you want to burn, select the files and then right-click and choose Copy. 4. In Windows Explorer right-click and choose Paste. Windows will show a list of the copied files, and is ready to burn them:

5. Right-click the window and select Write these files to CD, or select Write these files to CD from the CD Writing Tasks panel on the left side of the window. The opening screen of the CD Writing Wizard is displayed:

6. Enter the name of the CD, if required, and click Next. A progress window is displayed while Windows burns the files to the CD.

7. When all the files have been burnt onto the disk, click Next. The final screen of the CD Writing Wizard is displayed:

8. Select the checkbox to burn another CD using the same files, and repeat steps 6 and 7, or click Finish
