What is meant by Stress concentration factor? 3. State St. Venant theory of failure. 4. Define Notch sensitivity. 5. State eccentric load and eccentricity. PART-B Answer ALL Questions (8+16+16=40 Marks) 6. (a) (i) What is factor of safety? List the factors to be considered while deciding the factor of safety. (4) (ii) A shaft is to transmit 50 Kw at 1200 rpm. It is also subjected to a bending moment of 275 N-m. Allowable shear stress is 60 Mpa. The shaft is not to twist more than 2 in a length of 2 m. Design the shaft. (4) OR 6. (b) (i) Explain the various theories of failure in detail. (6) (ii) Define fatigue stress concentration factor and write the relation between fatigue stress concentration factor, stress concentration factor and notch sensitivity. (2) 7. (a) A unknown weight falls from a distance of 15 mm on to a collar rigidly attached to the lower end of a vertical bar 2.5 m long and 500 mm2 cross section. The maximum instantaneous extension is 2 mm. Find the corresponding stress and the value of the weight falling. Take E = 2x105 N/mm2 (16) OR 7. (b) A hollow shaft of 40 mm outer diameter and 25 mm inner diameter is subjected to a twisting moment of 120 N-m, simultaneously, it is subjected to an axial thrust of 10 kN and a bending moment of 80 N-m. Calculate the maximum compressive and shear stresses. (16) 8. (a) The frame of a punch press is shown in figure. Find the stresses at the inner and outer surface at section X-X of the frame, if W = 5000 N. (16)

(a) Determine the circular rod made of ductile material with a endurance limit is 265 Mpa and a tensile yield strength of 350 Mpa. The member is subjected to a varying axial load from -300 kN to 700 kN and has stress concentrator factor is 1.8. Take factor of safety as 2. (8) OR 6. (b) A cast iron pulley transmits 10 Kw at 400 rpm. The diameter of the pulley is 1.2 metre and it has four straight arms of elliptical cross-section, in which the major axis is twice the minor axis. Determine the dimensions of the arm if the allowable bending stress is 15 Mpa. (8) 7. (a) A mild steel bracket as shown in figure is subjected to a pull of 6000 N acting at 45 to its horizontal axis. The bracket has a rectangular section whose depth is twice the thickness. Find the cross-sectional dimensions of the bracket, if the permissible stress in the material of the bracket is limited to 60 MPa. (16)

OR 7. (b) A beam of I section of depth 250mm is 4m long and supported at the ends. 4kN of weight falls on the beam mid span from a height h. Moment of inertia is 8x107 mm4; Youngs modulus is 2.1x105 N/mm2. Determine the value of h if the stress is limited to 120 N/mm2. (16) 8. (a) The crane hook carries a load of 20 kN as shown in figure. The section at X-X is rectangular whose horizontal side is 100 mm. Find the stresses in the inner and outer fibres at the given section. (16)
