Differentiating Factors

105SL
DIFFERENTIATING FACTORS

TYPICAL USER
1.

When should I sell or recommend an S Series 105SL thermal printer? When the User wants one or more of the following:

Experienced users who seek a dependable, all-metal, 4 inch wide print solution under $2700 Desires a networkable printer for fixed location/distributed printing within an industrial setting.

Performs moderate to heavy-duty cycle individual, batch or full-roll labeling applications. Has application requirements that require the versatility of ZebraLink remote programming and printer management capability

2.

How does the 105SL thermal printer compare to Zebras other printer products?
When compared to Zebras other mid-range printers, including the Z4M and 2746, the 105SL represents the top-of the-line in ruggedness and durable, all-metal construction. The 105SL further caters to experienced bar coders -versus the novice users who are more likely to buy the Z4M and 2746 printers or less durable competitive printer offerings based on their specifications and price alone. The interior components on both the Z4M and 2746 include some plastic components (i.e. plastic color-coded operator cues, media spindles) while the 105SL uses all-metal components designed for a long life in industrial environments. When compared to the Zebra Xi Series, the 105SL can be viewed as a less featured, slower performing printer. The 105SL is not designed for the mission critical, 24/7 duty cycle applications of the Xis, but more for moderate to heavy duty cycle applications requiring a dedicated label printer or more affordable, distributed printer. For more detailed comparisons of the 105SL versus the Zebra product line, refer to the Zebra Product Differentiation section on the following pages.

Stiffening bends in sheet metal edges of printer housing provide increased rigidity and inherent strength.

Detailed construction ensures product longevity and enhanced product durability for performance in industrial environments. Metal components versus plastic are more durable and long-lasting. Extruded parts ensure that parallelism and straight edges are maintained during printing to generate optimum print quality results. Extruded parts frequently require less external structural support engineering due to the fact that they were formed as a complete part Extruded parts less likely to give way or torque (bend) under pressure from a weight or load

1 0 5 S L printers come equipped with 2MB useable DRAM to support longer label formats (up to 106 (2692mm)) ZPL II firmware and optional fonts can be upgraded and enhanced without modifying the electronics. Optional 8MB Flash available for increased download capacity for numerous custom fonts and large graphic images.

Increased DRAM memory provides measurable improvement to formatting performance with the ability to print longer labels. Flash option promotes permanent label storage in the advent of power loss and the use of international fonts in support of global labeling applications. Updates can be readily downloaded to the printer from Zebras website, without a service call to replace EPROMS. Print delays are minimized as printing occurs virtually simultaneous to label download Productivity is enhanced as the processors can each focus on specific tasks i.e. one processor strictly prints while the other strictly formats the next label format that is required to be printed

One of the highest memory options

available over comparable, competitive label printer brands.

NEW FLASH
Memory (up to 8MB available)

Reduces technical support and

maintenance requirements, more efficient customer support.

Flash memory option increases

competitive advantage and reduces parts inventory for sales channels as label formats and fonts can be downloaded in the field to suit virtually any end-user requirement, as needed, for increased selling capability.

NEW Dual RISC

and CISC Processors

ZPL printer has been revamped to provide optimal label format processing performance. Printer features a new electronic design and dual microprocessors.

Higher throughput is more

competitive.

V. P RINTER OVERVIEW

The following sections are designed to quickly familiarize the user with the General Features, Operating Requirements, and Warranty Coverage of the Z Series, 105SL, thermal printer. For more detailed product information, consult the 105SL Users Guide.

A.

GENERAL FEATURES / UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS

The 105SL thermal printer is a Zebra engineered product designed for moderate to heavy industrial text labeling and bar-code applications requiring an affordable, performance printer (under $2700) for dedicated single-purpose use. Some of the unique characteristics specific to the 105SL include:

1.

Rugged, Dependable All-Metal Construction The 105SL is constructed of a highly durable, steel metal frame that enables the printer to provide consistent print quality in many harsh industrial environments. Its interior components are also made up entirely of metal (i.e. spindles, media guides, drive gears, printhead mechanism, etc) which speaks to the products inherent quality and positions the 105SL at the top of Zebras mid-range product line in regards to overall ruggedness and dependability.

2.

3. Network Connectivity The 105SL comes equipped with ZebraLink real-time connectivity and control capabilities as well as a variety of flexible connectivity options, including hi-speed serial and bi-directional parallel interface, Twinax/Coax or a choice of internal or external Ethernet, that make it easy to adapt the printer to virtually any network environment. ZebraLinks Webview, Alert and ZBI capabilities make remote printer management and status notification of printer operation easy to enable IS Managers to take control of their working environment from anywhere. Finally, ZBI intelligent programming capabilities make it possible to create stand-alone print solutions with otherwise incompatible language devices such as weight scales or wand readers. ZBIs emulation library further enables non-ZPL compatible devices (i.e. competitive printer models) to be switched out in favor of Zebra printer products without having to re-write the competitor code. Improved Feature Capabilities The 105SL now offers more standard features for improved printer performance such as 8ips print speed, ZebraLink remote monitoring and configuration capability, standard LCD display, dual processors, and auto-calibration are just a few of the improvements made to this new generation S Series printer.
B. OPERATING REQUIREMENTS

2.

LABEL DISPENSING
The 105SL printer has the capability of dispensing printed labels in tear-off or peel-off modes. In the tear-off mode, the label remains attached to its stock backing and is presented outside the unit to be torn off against a "tear-off" bar by the user. In the peel-off mode, the label is separated from its stock backing by a peel bar and is presented to the user for easy removal and application. The peel mode works in conjunction with an internal rewind feature that neatly coils the label backing around a spindle for clean operation and tidy removal of label backing material.

Printer Overview

105SL
A/C POWER SWITCH /INDICATOR LIGHT The power switch is located at the back of the printer directly above the power cord as indicated by the diagram Figure 2. The power supply in the 105SL printer is auto-sensing and works over a broad voltage range (90 to 265 VAC). The power indicator light on the display panel designates when the printer is powered on. PAUSE BUTTON Activating the PAUSE key while the printer is printing will cause the printer to stop or pause once the current label is complete. No labels are lost during pause, whereby the PAUSE indicator light will illuminate to easily identify printer status to the user. Users can utilize this key to pause a print job immediately, for any reason, as required. Pressing the PAUSE button again will cause print to resume exactly where it stopped. DATA INDICATOR (located above CANCEL BUTTON) No data light indicates normal operation. A slow flashing data indicator signifies that the printer is unable to accept more data from the host PC. A fast flashing data light indicates that the printer is receiving data. A constant on data light indicates that a partial format has been received with no subsequent data activity. ERROR INDICATOR LIGHTS The 105SL comes equipped with diverse error indicator lights i.e. ERROR, CHECK RIBBON or PAPER OUT. No error light indicates normal operation. A flashing error indicator signifies an error condition. Details for these error conditions are displayed in the LCD display. FEED BUTTON The FEED key will cause the printer to immediately feed a single blank label. Users can activate the FEED key to test label alignment and positioning and proper printer operation before attempting to print a label. CANCEL BUTTON The CANCEL key will cancel a print job when the printer is in PAUSE mode. If print jobs are currently printing in a queue from the host computer, pressing the CANCEL key once will cancel the current print job. To delete all print jobs in the printers memory, press and hold the CANCEL key for a minimum of 3 seconds until you see the DATA transmission light go off. This indicates that all print jobs in the queue have been successfully canceled. Users can quickly and easily cancel print jobs, by activating the CANCEL key on the printers front panel, saving time and reducing label waste in the advent of a print error. NEXT/SAVE Scrolls forward to the next parameter or saves any changes made in the configuration and calibration sequence once an option selection is made. Press and hold to quickly advance through parameter sets. PREVIOUS Scrolls forward to the previous parameter. Press and hold to quickly go backward through parameter sets. SETUP/EXIT The SETUP/EXIT key, as its name suggests, enters and exits the configuration mode.

5.

SENSORS
The following sensor types are contained within the 105SL thermal printers: Printhead Sensor: Checks the open/closed status of the printhead. If the printhead is open, the printhead light indicator will immediately flash, warning users of a non-print condition whereby the printhead must be closed before attempting to print. Transmissive sensors recognize the see-through "gaps" or joints between labels as light is permitted to filter through these joints indicating the labels overall length. Similarly, the reflective sensor option gauges label length via the black marks found on the media backing which reflect light back to the sensor from the labels joint. Both sensor types enable users to print on diverse label stocks including continuous, notch, black mark, tag stock or perforated and promote the printers auto-calibration feature. During auto-calibration, the printer relies on such sensor readings to automatically adjust to varying label lengths promoting worry-free print capability on varying media (label) types.

Transmissive / Reflective Media Sensors:

Tear-Off / Peel-Off Label Sensors:

Tear-Off /Peel-Off (Take label) sensors enable the user to work at their own pace and preferred mode of operation during the labeling process. Peel-Off mode instructs the printer to remove the label from its backing and wait until the label is removed by the user before issuing a new label. Tear-Off mode, similarly, allows individual or groups of labels to be torn-off the printers tear bar by pulling it down and away against the tear bar.

Check Ribbon Sensor :

The ribbon sensor on the105SL printer immediately detects when ribbon is exhausted before label data loss occurs. Users are warned exactly when to replace ribbon lessening the likelihood of print interruptions.

7. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE
For optimum performance of the 105SL thermal printer, Zebra recommends cleaning the printer on a regular basis using standard Zebra printer parts and cleaning supplies. Consult the Users Guide for specific details.

Cleaning: The exterior is cleaned with a lint-free cloth and if necessary, a mild detergent solution or desktop cleaner. Interior components including the printhead, platen roller, media sensor, peel bar and media paths are cleaned with an alcohol-sealed, specially formulated solution swab (call Zebra for availability) or blown air to remove any dirt or dust particles that may have accumulated during use. The unique (white) coloring of the 105SLs platen roller also differentiates it from competitive printer models. Dirt build-up and debris are easily visible on the 105SLs white platen roller and serve as an easy indicator to users to clean the platen roller and printhead. As a general rule of thumb, Zebra recommends cleaning the printhead following ribbon replacement.
