Celebrating 18 Years! Supporting Families in Adult Caregiving bssads1@berkeleyseniorservices.org
On July 15th, Adult Day Services celebrates 18 years of service to the Eastern Panhandle caregiving community! Adult Day Services provides unpaid family caregivers with respite (a break) from the constancy of care. While caregivers do so, their assisted adult loved one receives safe, supervised assistance with activities they enjoy in the day program. Alternately, a staff member can come to your home to provide individualized assistance. Our trained and experienced team of staff and volunteers are dedicated to providing care and assistance at the same level they would their own family member. Feel free to call or stop by to see how we may benefit you and your assisted loved one.

Wandering Behavior Preparing For And Preventing It

Alzheimers disease causes millions of Americans to lose their ability to recognize familiar places and faces. Six in ten people with Alzheimers disease will wander. They may become disoriented and lost, even in their own neighborhoods. Although common, wandering behavior can be dangerous; if not found within 24 hours, up to half of those who wander risk serious injury or death. Wandering is among the biggest challenges caregivers face. Following are tips from the Alzheimers Association to help you prepare for or prevent wandering behavior in loved ones with Alzheimers disease or a related dementia: Whos at risk to wander? Anyone who: Returns from a regular walk or drive later than usual. Tries to fulfill former obligations, such as going to work. Tries to go home even when at home. Is restless, paces or makes repetitive movements. Has difficulty locating familiar places like the bathroom, bedroom or dining room. Checks the whereabouts of familiar people. Acts as if doing a hobby or chore, but nothing gets done (e.g. moves around pots and dirt without planting anything). Feels lost in a new or changed environment. Consider behavior Be aware of who is at risk for wandering. Identify the most likely times of day that wandering may occur; plan activities at that time. Provide opportunities for activities and exercise. When night wandering is a problem, make sure the person has restricted fluids two hours before bedtime and has gone to the bathroom just before bed. Limit daytime naps, if possible. Monitor reaction to medications. Consult a physician, if necessary.

Use communication focused on validating feelings (not correcting) when the individual says that he or she wants to leave to go home or to work. If wandering is in progress, use distraction to re-direct the individuals focus. Consider the home environment Nightlights: Place throughout the home. Locks: Place out of the line of sight. Install slide bolts at the top or bottom of doors. Door knobs: Cover knobs with cloth the same color as the door, or use childproof knobs. Doors: Camouflage doors by painting them the same color as the walls, or cover them with removable curtains or screens. Use black tape, paint or a rug to create a two-foot black hole in front of the door. Warning bells: Place above doors. Monitoring devices: Try devices that signal you when a door is opened. Place a pressure-sensitive mat at the door or persons bedside to alert you to movement. Hedges or fence: Put around the patio, yard or other outside common areas. Safety gates or bright colored netting: Use to bar access to stairs or other places the person should not go. Programs that can assist in locating an individual who may wander and become lost include Safe Return and Comfort Zone through the Alzheimers Association. Call 800-372-3900 or visit www.alz.org/wv for more information. Project Lifesaver (a GPS tracking system available in more than 30 counties in West Virginia). Contact your county sheriffs office to see if its set up in your county. Silver Alert, a program that allows State Police to work with broadcast media outlets to get vital information to the public when an adult with Alzheimers disease or other cognitive impairment is missing.

Ericka Shade: A Journey with Berkeley Senior Services

I have worked for Berkeley Senior Services for a little over a year in the In Home Care department. I was first hired as a Homemaker Aide, and shortly after was promoted to an Aide II position. With this position, I spend my mornings in the office helping with whatever work needs to be done, and my afternoons in my clients home. I also substitute when other homemakers cannot make it to their clients home and conduct random spot checks to ensure that our staff is providing top level care to our clients. One client that I provided care for was diagnosed with bone cancer. Her strength and determination amazed me. The first week of her treatments, I walked in on Thursday afternoon, and she told me she was not going. My response oh yes you are, even if I have to carry you! We both laughed as I reassured her that she only had two days and she would be finished until next month. Even though her 3 sisters were 4 hours from her, the bond that all of us shared is so special to me. I now provide care for a client, with diabetes. Being blind from her diabetes does not slow her down. She loves to play the piano, spend time outside, goes to church and visits

with her best friend who also lives in her building. She is truly an inspiration to me and I love our time together. I have the best of both worlds with my job. I am able to help Berkeley Senior Services on many levels from working behind the scenes in the office and on the front line in our clients homes. I have been so blessed by the clients that I have worked with, and cherish all the friendships that I have made with them. I love my job and making a difference in the lives of our clients!

SOME THOUGHTS ON MEDICARE

STEVE ENGLEBRIGHT, BSS SHIP COUNSELOR
ANNUAL ELECTION PERIOD FOR 2013
Even though we are just going into summer, now is the time to mark your calendar for this years open enrollment season. By planning ahead a little, you will be better prepared when that time gets here. This years open enrollment begins October 14th and runs through December 6th. I will begin taking calls for appointments October 1st for open season and I expect the slots will fill up quickly so dont put it off.
Medicare cards just prior to the month in which they turn 65. So, if you are about to reach 65, keep an eye out for your Medicare enrollment card to arrive in the mail. Your red-white-blue Medicare card will show if you are enrolled in part A or both parts A and part B. It is important to remember that your open window to enroll in parts B and D have a time limit and you may face penalties should you not enroll within your election period. As a new enrollee, you have three months before and three months after your effective month in which to elect coverage without penalty.

NEW MEDICARE ENROLLEES

If you are about to become eligible for Medicare, what will that mean to you in terms of coverage and compatibility with other insurance you may also have or need? Most people automatically receive their red-white-blue
