Hi Everyone, OK, it looks like Summer really is on its way! What a glorious weekend weve just had. I spent it out and about with my two girls enjoying the start of the school fetes! What have you been doing? Ive had an incredible few months with trips all over Europe, but its time to hang up the travelling shoes and get focused on where Baby Buzz Magazine is going next. Ive had the most incredible amount of feedback from my readers with the April / May issue receiving almost 10,000 downloads and the June issue not too far behind that but my task now is to really ask all of you my readers to forward the online link or the hard copy on to your family and friends so that I can really push Baby Buzz Magazine into the baby world! This month we are hitting on a rather touchy subject of Domestic Violence and I know people will ask why on earth put this into a baby, child and parenting magazine. Quite simply the amount of women (and men) affected by domestic violence means that potentially some of my readers could be affected by it and wont know where to turn to. If the information enclosed in this months issue helps just one person, then Im doing my bit to raise awareness. Please note there is a link within the magazine to sign a petition in memory of Maria, who was brutally murdered in 2008, please, please do sign in and leave your details, it will take just 1 minute of your time! We also have fantastic recipes which are designed to encourage you to get your children involved! Give them a go and send in some pictures - wed love to put them on the new website. We have reviewed another buggy and car seat courtesy of Cybex and Joie which are both fantastic but so very differen. As with last month, we have great prize giveaways . Are you in need of some inspiration or encouragement, is starting your own business the right thing to do? Read what this months businesses have done and how and why it worked for them Who is behind the Product? Just me . Nicola Norris. How did the company get started? It started as result of my own experiences during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Maternity clothes that I wanted to wear, just didn't really exist. High street stores didn't offer the quality, or cut, that I was looking for and designer brands were just not my style. I hated wrap-dresses and could never wear skinny jeans, or a body-con dress! I knew exactly what I wanted to wear, but I could never find it. I wanted a dress that skimmed my body and didn't cling to my lumps and bumps. Breast-feeding was even more frustrating. I don't think I bought one item that I liked. I saw some lovely clothes on-line, but they were usually made of silk and cut for slim figures. I certainly wasn't slim after having my daughter and never felt that milk and silk got on very well together. I still wanted my body skimming dress, but now realised it had to function for breast-feeding and be made from a washable fabric. The Bibee Dress was my perfect solution. What is the company about? I hope to make other mums feel a little bit better about themselves during pregnancy and whilst breast-feeding. Having nothing to wear was a real frustration for me and I told my husband I wasn't going to have number two until I had solved my wardrobe dilemmas. He has been very supportive of Bibee Dresses! What has been the highlight of starting your own company? Seeing my product for sale in shops gives me a real sense of achievement. The product has grown and evolved so much, in such a short space of time sometimes I have to sit back and take it all in. What has been the downside of starting your own company? It's been really stressful at times and a very steep learning curve. The website has been the most testing part and it took me a long time to get it right. Designing the product was a challenge, but also fun and I was totally clear on what I wanted, which made the process easier. What would your advice be to any parent wanting to start up their own business? Think about it first and be totally sure that your idea is a good one and that your life can support the up's and down's. Mixing setting up a business with having a family is not easy and there are times when it will push you to your limit. Be sure you are up for the emotional and financial challenge before giving it a go!

Who is behind MyShowcase? Nancy Cruickshank is the Founder of MyShowcase. I launched Conde Nast online (Vogue, GQ etc.) in 1995/6. It was ground breaking at that time and I felt incredibly lucky to be steering this fascinating business. This experience fostered my addiction to digital & social media. This led to many other great opportunities to launch my own businesses and also to help large corporates to develop their own digital strategies. I have led businesses for BSkyB, Telegraph Media Group, Hearst & a JV between the UKs 3 largest mobile network operators (Vodafone, EE & Telefonica). It has been fascinating to witness the incredible transformation in consumers usage of digital media over the past 20 years. Technology as a conduit for innovative business ventures and as a direct connection with consumers is fascinating to me! As I conceived the idea for MyShowcase, I began to discuss it with my long-time industry friends, Rodrigo Dauster (exVisual DNA, Gekko, Imagini), Kate Shapland (Telegraph Beauty Editor) and Olivier Beau de Lomenie (who built the technology platform at Ocado). They loved the idea and joined me as co-Founder in MyShowcase. The make-up of our team is vital to enabling us to build a world-class technology platform and innovative retail concept to serve our customers, brand partners and Stylist network. How did the company get started? In 2000, I founded a business called Handbag.com. It became the no.1 Fashion & Beauty site in the UK in the noughties. 1.5m women visited the site every month and 400k of these chatted in our discussion areas about all sorts of things. I discovered that women between the ages of 25 and 55 talked regularly about a desire to launch their own business and find a flexible way to work whilst bringing up a family or fulfilling other life goals. Yet there seemed to be many barriers to making this possible and not enough great opportunities to succeed in a supported manner. At the same time, I sat on the Beauty industry trade board, Cosmetic Executive Women. I saw so much innovation, passion and great products from new beauty brands, yet they often found it challenging to build distribution in the traditional department stores up against larger global beauty players. These two fascinating conundrums brewed in my mind over the years and in 2011, I began to develop MyShowcase with my extraordinary business partners, including renowned Beauty journalist & expert, Kate Shapland (Telegraph). What is the company about? MyShowcase is a new concept in Beauty retail, with a passion for supporting female entrepreneurs in building or expanding their own Beauty businesses. MyShowcase sells 20+ different beauty brands via our network of female Stylists. These brands are not widely available on the UK high street but each has an amazing story to tell. Some of them are a little better known than
others Balance Me, Blink, T Le Clerc, Neom and others are lesser known today Beatitude, Ruth Mastenbroek and Antonia Burrell to name just a few. Our Stylists are women (most of them have no background whatsoever in Beauty) who want to work, but flexibly. They organise showcases (largely in homes, but occasionally in offices too) where they showcase our brands. Customers can buy at our events and also via our website - www.myshowcase.com. What do you hope to achieve? We aim to make MyShowcase your first port of call to discover highly effective and gorgeous beauty products that are not widely available on the UK high street. This is largely done via showcases in our customers homes, creating very social shopping opportunities with your girlfriends. Equally, the response to MyShowcase has been amazing. We are always thrilled to attend our events and to see and hear women enjoying a showcase. We are fortunate to receive lots of great testimonials about our concept, whether thats a delighted customer who has just taken delivery of one of our specially packaged orders or a guest at a showcase who is enjoying trying out a new product or brand and gaining candid feedback from her girlfriend about whether that item suits her! Women appear to have fun at our events and thats important to us. Our hosts regularly re-book a second or third showcase, as they tell us that they love our host rewards and sharing beauty discoveries with their group of friends in the comfort of their home. Finally, there are our Stylists. This is a vitally important group of women for MyShowcase. We place enormous emphasis on supporting them & responding to all of their fantastic feedback. Women become Stylists for a variety of reasons to earn some extra money, work towards a larger goal such as a fab family holiday, indulge their passion for Beauty and socialising & many other things too. We are so lucky to receive wonderful emails every day from our Stylists, this is one of the great pleasures of this job! What has been the downside of starting your own company? There is never enough time in any day to achieve all of the things that I want to do! And, of course, it is a juggling act every day fulfilling the needs of my family and my business. That said, I have two daughters (aged 10 and 8) who are very willing accomplices in setting up showcases and giving me their expert opinions on which nail polish colours we should stock! What would your advice be for any parent wanting to start up their own business? There is no substitute for passion, determination & giving something a go! I set myself a goal, however large or minor, and work hard to achieve this. Goals should be attainable, however ambitious, as I think about every goal achieved being a step towards reaching a more significant result. I also believe passionately in creating things, gaining as much customer feedback as is humanly possible and then adapting accordingly to make an even better product or experience. Customers are willing collaborators in my experience and I am always keen to listen carefully to what they have to say and to provide better solutions as a result. Launching a business as a parent can definitely be challenging. This is a fundamental part of what inspired me to launch MyShowcase. There are so many incredibly talented women who would like to launch their own business, but just cant make the juggling act work alongside family commitments. How did the company get started? In 1996, I moved from my native Australia to the United States. In 2003, I received the news that I was expecting my first daughter, Anais. After scouring store after store in the US, I was shocked when I couldnt find the muslin swaddle blankets that I knew and loved from back home: not only could I not find them, no one had a clue what I was talking about. Every blanket that was on the market designed for swaddling was either too heavy or too small. Before I could stop myself, I was taking a page from Platos Republic inventing by way of necessity. So, in collaboration with my then partner, I decided to start manufacturing the blankets myself to sell into the US market. Today, we can be found in 35 countries around the world and in many thousands of stores. What is the company about? I based my business on two simple ideas: - swaddling makes babies and parents happy - muslin is the perfect swaddling material With everything I create, my aim is to offer products that are best for baby and simplify the lives of parents. I try to create beautiful, stylish products that parents really need and that are practical as well as useful on a daily basis rather than something that is just nice to have. What do you hope to achieve? We were a product before we were a brand. In the US, we are now told by retailers that people come in and ask for our brand specifically. Now, we are focusing on building the brand name and are just starting to focus on actively marketing our company in addition to our products, especially in the international markets where we have not been around as long as we have in the US. We are completely focused on remaining the market leader in the muslin space, in spite of the myriad of competitors that are now jumping on the muslin bandwagon and will do so by continuing to offer superior, innovative, stylish products at affordable prices. What has been the highlight of starting your own company? There have been many highlights, but one of the things that I still get the biggest thrill from is when I receive letters and emails from mums from all over the world telling me how much both them and their babies / children love our products. I am always particularly touched when mothers of sick children write to me to tell me that our products were a huge source of comfort to their babies through their treatment. I am humbled that they take the time to write to me to tell me that, especially given that they are clearly going through an extremely traumatic and challenging time with a sick baby. What has been the downside of starting your own company? The only downside is the toll it initially takes on you, in every way: emotionally, mentally and physically. It was harder in the early stages than I could have ever imagined. Now I am through the real start up stage of the business and I have a fantastic group of people that work with me at aden + anais all over the world, so things have gotten much easier. And sitting here today, I can tell you it was worth the struggle to get to where we are now. However, during the first few years, there were many times that I felt I had bitten off more than I could chew and regretted ever starting aden + anais at all. I am just really glad that I pushed through and never gave up. What would be your advice to any parent wanting to start up their own business? I am a big believer in leap and the net will appear, a quote by John Burrows that resonated with me for many years. My advice is, if you believe in your idea, then go for it. And make sure you have a really strong support base, especially if you are a parent. I could never have started and built this business without the unflinching support of my husband; he is my biggest champion and has stepped up many times to pick up the slack with our four daughters when I have been overwhelmed with all things aden + anais. Once you have actually dived in the deep end and started the business, my advice would be to know what you dont know and always be open to other peoples point of view and suggestions, especially if it is in an area that you are not at all versed in. That said, if you are a true entrepreneur you will have an opinion on EVERYTHING and it is also important to follow your initial instinct on something because in my experience, your gut is usually right, so trust in it. Finally, smart, talented, humble, motivated peopleyou cannot have a successful business without surrounding yourself with them, it is key.

Who is behind the Product? Hi, I am Tanika a 27 year old mum to one infectiously charming little boy named Harley Niall, (I just call him Harley) aged two. I am the founder and owner of web based shop Made with Love Kids, where I stock some of the coolest brands in childrens fashion. I also work full time as a HR Manager for a Design and Innovation Strategy consultancy. How did the company get started? What started out as a mother sourcing new brands to buy for her little boy out of dissatisfaction with high street offerings launched into web shop (catering for both boys and girls) stocking emerging and established style conscious concept brands. I take my personal style quite seriously and have always felt that your partner should complement your style, your home should complement your style and the same I believe should be true for your kids. (Shallow I know!) My personal style is quite is easy to satisfy with high-end high street brands but to find a childrens brand to complement my style for my son was very difficult. I like childrens fashion brands that are led by adult fashion, almost creating a mini me; but keeping the fun and innocence of childhood, with personality, print and splashes of colour. The criteria were quite specific because I knew exactly what I wanted and was determined to find a brand that suited my taste. And I did, in fact I found many. Out of this shallow need for something different came a shop that caters for those with similar taste. What is the company about? Made with Love Kids is a web based shop stocking cool childrens fashion brands like Mini Rodini, Pale Cloud, Livly, Gro, Loud Apparel, Finger in the Nose, Hucklebones, Mini and Maximus and more. Made with Love Kids ethos is to introduce style conscious parents to style conscious brands. What do you hope to achieve? I hope to continue to grow the Made with Love Kids brand and expand the product range. Maintaining the Made with Love Kids ethos and values is imperative and I hope to build upon them by continuing to source the very best childrens fashion brands. Perhaps one day, in the not too distant future, I will open a physical store in London. I have really enjoyed the blogging and feature writing element of the business too and hope to explore this side a little more, but thats more of a personal goal I think. What has been the highlight of starting your own company? There has not been a particular event or feature that I would call a highlight perhaps that will come in time; but the whole experience of starting and running my own business is a highlight for me. Owning a business is something I had wanted to do since the age of 21 when a friend and I embarked on opening an art gallery to showcase emerging designers and artists. Needless to say that didnt work! The fact that I have achieved something I have been longing to do for years is a highlight in itself. I hope to give up my full time work within the next 12-18 months, so of course working flexible hours and spending more time with my son and less time commuting will be the highlight of starting Made with Love Kids. What has been the downside of starting your own company? The downside, if there is one, has got to be the long hours, especially as I still have full time job, and having no money! I rarely find time for myself nowadays and its starting to show. I plough a lot of my personal income as well as profit into the business as it is still new, so I have sacrificed many of the luxuries I am used to. Made with Love Kids has been trading for less than a year but the sacrifice I have made for the business has already flourished into many other avenues for me; contributing blogger, styling and photography. So I guess there is no downside really! What would your advice be to any parent wanting to start up their own business? There is so much advice I could and would give anyone starting a new business but I think that experiences are so unique and what works for me might not work for another person and vice versa. In my experience I would say as a rule of thumb dont think about starting a business to make money; dont think itll be your ticket out of your current job. Start your business in something you enjoy, turning you hobby into a business is great idea. That way you forget that its a business and you forget that it is work. Staying focused is the key and remembering the reasons why you are/have started your own business. Accept help and be prepared to adapt to anything that comes your way (good or bad). Without the help and support of my parents, especially my mum who has made a significant financial contribution to my business; I really wouldnt have been able to get the business off the ground. I am lucky to not have had to go down the loan or investment route, but if you have to do it, nothing ventured, nothing gained. It is important to be open-minded and realistic. Nothing is going to happen overnight; and to be fair its better that it doesnt happen that way. Be true to yourself and know your limits. Anything after that is just a blessing. Get an accountant, that way you will keep your hair.

Who is behind the product? Cocobaci was founded by Linda Alexander, Antonella Bettley & Sarah Edwards. Linda & Antonella have both had successful careers in fashion buying. They have worked at senior levels for large corporate businesses and first met over 20 years ago whilst working as young buyers. Their career paths and personal lives have run parallel over the years and the two are close friends. Sarahs background is merchandising and she first met Antonella when they started working together in March 2011. They hit it off instantly!! How did the company get started? By a twist of fate they were all made redundant in early 2012. Having young daughters Linda & Antonella decided they wanted to spend more time with their little girls and wanted to do something for themselves that they felt hugely passionate about. Following the birth of their girls they both found a new love, gorgeous baby things!! However, their experience was that finding what we wanted was incredibly frustrating & time consuming!! So the idea of a beautiful website for luxury baby clothing & gifts was born.... With both their backgrounds being similar they really wanted another partner someone who would compliment their skill set. With Sarah's background in merchandising she was the perfect partner. Sarah had often talked of setting up her own business & she was the natural choice for us to approach. Thankfully she loved the idea... Following the initial shock of being made redundant it was time to take this opportunity to turn a negative into a positive and their dream into a reality. By March 2012 they were busy working on their gifting concept. By the summer they had created the vision, started building the site and begun finding the perfect partners to help them deliver the brand. After much hard work and many long nights www.cocobaci.com was born on 10th April 2013 What is the company about? Baby & gift shopping made easy!! From our own experience we knew that finding the perfect collection under one roof was near on impossible. So we decided to create our own personal edit of the most beautiful clothing brands & unique & gorgeous hand made gifts. In addition we have created a range of fabulous newborn gift bundles, each one handpicked from our range of gorgeous brands. We have also collaborated on beautiful exclusive jewellery & furniture collections. We believe we have created a simple but exquisite boutique where shopping is made effortlessly easy and enjoyable. What do you hope to achieve? We want to provide our customers with a great shopping experience from the range of fantastic products on offer - to the customer service - to the delivery that arrives beautifully wrapped. Having just launched our priority is to ensure we understand our customer fully and offer her what she wants. We hope to be the number one destination for beautiful gifts for babies!! What has been the highlight of starting your own company? The freedom to make your own decisions and create something that we are very proud of. We are certainly kept busy but the beauty of having your own business is that you can be flexible with the hours you work and fit it in around your children and family life. All 3 of us bring a different skill set and approach to running the business. We do everything in the business ourselves and are all incredibly passionate about making a success of Cocobaci. What has been the downside of starting your own company? There hasnt really been a downside as such. Sleepless nights worrying about getting everything right is possibly one. Having to do everything yourself has also been a little scary. None of us were proficient in technology but we have been quick to ask questions and learn not to mention getting to grips with social media!! What would your advice be to any parent wanting to start up their own business? Go for it!! It gives you a wonderful sense of freedom. However, ensure you have a focused strategy & vision for the business. Also discipline yourself to balance work with spending quality time with your family working from home the temptation is always there to carry on for a few more hours!!

How did the company get started? Katies Kastles was started quite by fluke, I was on a buying and selling group ( Facebook ) and someone wanted to hire a cheap bouncy castle and we had brought a commercial one for our daughters 1st birthday so I offered to lend that. We had got such a huge response we thought wed look into it as a part time extra income and so we ordered 2 brand new bouncy castles and decided on a name that would be easily remembered and quite catchy and KATIES KASTLES was born. What is the company about? The company is about an affordable product, great prices, excellent customer service and reliability. We are a small family run business and realise how important as a parent it is to get the best service for their money. We make sure our inflatables are RPII checked every year ( inflatable mot ), cleaned after every hire and all electrical products PAT tested as standard. What do you hope to achieve? In the last few months we have achieved so much and feel we are going from strength to strength as our 2 bouncy castles have gone to 6 castles, slide and soft play and we run a weekly play group in Enfield, Katies Kingdom, which was just voted Net mums gold star award. Id like to think that we will, by the end of 2015, have a fleet of 20 inflatables and a permanent soft play centre as well as event organising and best party planners and supplier. What has been the highlight of starting your own company? There are so many highlights of starting both Katies Kastles and Katies kingdom but the 3 top are knowing that children are having fun with our products, being able to choose which direction we want our business to go and that both my husband and I have a job that we both love and really does include the children! What has been the downside of starting your own company? The only downside to starting is that my phone is my new best friend, Im constantly on the phone, email or facebook. Plus my children like many other think its the best time to talk to you when youre on the phone. What would your advice be to any parent wanting to start up their own business? My advice is if you truly believe you can sell your product or service then go for it believe in your product and network! Everyday I get overwhelmed with how many people recommend us and text to say how great everything went and will us as theyre next party supplier.

It has loads of ideas to keep little ones of all ages entertained with out resorting to television that said I still use Iggle Piggle in the evening to keep the boys out of mischief whilst I am bathing them! For example when making dinner or washing up I sit the boys on the floor with saucepans and wooden spoons (this is great from 6 months on when they can sit up). They have recently taken to posting various toys out the cat flap but it keeps them quiet for a valuable 20 minutes while I get dinner on. For older kids, just sit them at the kitchen table with a couple of bowls, a packet of raisins and chopsticks and get them to move the raisins into one bowl then between the bowls using the chopsticks this works on so many levels. If they start getting really hungry they snack on raisins a healthy option! It improves their hand eye coordination it also helps develop their fine motor skills. If the weather is really bad and you cant possible venture out the house for danger of being washed away, then set up a cushion assault course in your living room be sure to move breakables out the way. You can let your little ones go charging around over cushions, practice their balance by getting them to tightrope walk over a piece of string on the carpet use their imagination: the carpet is a fearsome ocean and the string is a magic bridge which they have to walk over if they miss the string then lot of hungry fish (your fingers) will come and gobble up their toes (an excuse for grabbing the toes and making chomping noises whilst you tickle their feet!). For younger children from 9 months old, posting objects is great fun just cut a hole in the lid of a shoebox and let them play with it. If you have an older child they can decorate the box with paints / glitter or you could wrap it up in shiny paper to make it more interesting but you really dont need to.
It is so easy to use the television when you are desperate for a few minutes to prepare the dinner / do the washing up, or even for those like me who are blessed with twins; the lure of In the Night Garden so Iggle Piggle can keep one toddler entertained whilst you bath the other. (I have two very boisterous boys and have not perfected the art of bathing both at the same time with any semblance of safety!).
I thought that I would use my back ground in medicine to have a look at the research and see is it really that terrible to let your children watch the television for a short time each day? I mean honestly how bad can it be. If you put T.V and children or kids into Google all you come up with is pages and pages of television programs for kids, so I turned to the scientific literatureI know that this is the part where most people switch off so I will keep it short and try to make it interesting. Essentially it is really bad for children under the age of 2 to watch any TV at all. Not good for Iggle Piggle! I read about the reasoning and development of childrens brain and here goes Essentially babies and toddlers have brains that are designed to process information by using all heir senses, not just sight. They need to see, hear, feel and mouth / bite things for their brain to make the appropriate connections to learn. Furthermore they are programmed to respond to a huge variety of complex facial and vocal nuances from adults, especially their parents. All of these are missing on the television. An example that illustrates this used by the American Academy of Pediatricians is watching a ball roll on the screen. On the television it appears as a sphere, the toddler can not get a sense for how heavy or light it is, how fast or slow it is moving, what it feels or tastes like, then it just disappears to be replaced by something else. Your baby / toddler cannot process this visual stimulus; it makes no sense to them. If they roll a ball on the floor whilst you are in the kitchen with them they get a mountain of sensory feedback information on how the ball feels, how heavy it is, how to roll it softly so it goes a small way and hard so it goes out the door. They can crawl after it and see it outside the door to reinforce the idea of object permanence. Further more they can watch you.
Other studies have shown that babies and toddlers need interaction with adult humans usually their mothers but it can be any care giver - to process information and optimize their development. Even if only for a short time if they look up at you and you smile / say something encouraging / frown / they respond and learn. None of this is possible with television. In conclusion the AAP recommends that no child under 2 years old should watch television, and after that whatever there age it should be limited to 2 hours per day. Academically boys often lag behind girls especially in the primary school years, mainly in language and written skills. One activity which bothers most parents and especially parents with boys, is gun play. Boys will turn anything into a gun or a weapon even their fingers if nothing else is available. Ive rarely seen girls do this. So if your boy is obsessed with gun play, what do you do? Here are my suggestions: Are Will and Kate expecting a boy or a girl? We will have to wait until some time in July to find out. But does it make a difference to the way their child will be raised? And does gender make a difference to any parent? Even when parents intend to raise boys and girls in the same way, are there natural, inherent gender differences which parents can expect between raising boys to raising girls? These days we avoid gender stereotyping and are careful to ensure that both sexes have equal opportunities. Weve had women astronauts, engineers and prime ministers and men crying during Bambi type films and staying at home looking after babies. Im all for equal opportunities so in suggesting there are differences between boys and girls, I hope Im not falling into the danger of stereotyping, and Im certainly not suggesting that we go back to giving only girls the dolls and telling them to play house, and boys the toy trucks, while telling them that real men dont cry. But Ive spoken to enough parents to know that raising boys just IS different to raising girls . If you disagree, and feel theres no differences at all, stop reading but do email me as Id be interested in having a conversation! I also dont want parents to label your children. Once labelled you might have certain expectations and raise your children to fall into those expectations. Yet most parents that Ive spoken to professionally, admit that there are differences so what are they? 1. A) teach your child the difference between pretend and real by talking to them as often as possible about it. b) Teach them to respect the weapons even when they are not real. c) You tell them that if they are going to play with guns, there are strict rules. One of these rules will be the amount of time they can play with them in the same way that I hope you limit screen times (computers and TVs). Another rule will be that they should never point the weapon at anyone whos not participating in their game. d) Talk to them about it being OK if people opt out. Not all their friends will want to join in with gun play and they have to respect that. e) If your child loves guns or weapon play, make sure an adult they respect role models solving disputes by talking so they dont think that all disputes should be solved with weapons. Also get an adult to talk to them about the proper use of guns in society so your child learns to respect them. f) If they are very young, try to get them to focus on shooting monsters or other fictitious characters rather than people. g) Talk as much as possible about peoples feelings and how people get hurt physically and emotionally so they can develop empathy towards people. h) Teach them in general not to be impulsive. In most challenging situations its best to count to 10 before reacting. i) Talk to them about consequences of behaviour so they can understand that again we cant just react but we have to think ahead to possible consequences.

If GBS is found in the urine during pregnancy, Mum will be given oral antibiotics to clear the infection. She will also be offered intravenous antibiotics in labour against GBS infection developing in her baby. If GBS has only been found from a vaginal or rectal swab, antibiotics arent given as theyre not beneficial during pregnancy until labour starts, when they should be offered intravenously to minimise the risk of GBS infection in the newborn baby. Unlike other western countries, testing for GBS is not routinely offered in the UK and many NHS hospitals dont have access to the sensitive gold standard ECM (Enriched Culture Medium) tests for GBS carriage. So I was troubled. As my children get older they can do more by themselves but my youngest is still a baby. I took my children to a lovely tearoom that I know that has a contained playroom (you know that I know all these places!!!) One of the ladies that come to the network were there, working in one room, whilst her partner was in another room doing a class with their child. She was a little agitated of course but when I asked her if she got some work done, she happily said yes and I got my tea and lunch here too! She was quite happy which gave me an idea. What if we took away daddy (or whoever was looking after munchkins), and all got into one room together. Some venues have party rooms, which they rent out for events and classes. What if I had a party? But instead of the parents all standing around chatting, they all took their laptops with them and did some work whilst the kids played. We could take it in turns watching the kids whilst the rest of us actually worked. It would be a bit like working at home, without the TV and with children that the kids knew (or at least all the parents do), they would have a great time and we would get some emails done or whatever we needed for a couple of hours. It would be a Working Party! A wonderful way for us to actually get something done whilst you had 1) taken the kids out and 2) brought them somewhere nice and 3) they played with children that they would have been making friends with at meeting anyway! I am a little worried that we would all end up chatting or gossiping, but at least if you have the opportunity to work you can actually get something done, and really once weve had a good coffee and catch up, I think we will start working at some point! I hope! Im thinking the new Working Party could be something for those of us that suffer from THE GUILT. I dont know about most women but I know some of us suffer from guilty feelings from working and not being with our children. Ive been told, by an amazing working mum that we do it for the children. All the work we do, its for them at the end of the day.
Ive met so many amazing people and they inspire me every day. Ive had parents talk to me about real working parents issues like child care. I know some amazing people that are nannys, au-pair or even au-pair agencies as well as private nurseries. Amazing women, helping other hard working parents that entrust them with the most important thing in the world, their babies.

No one should have to endure this kind of painand your first step to breaking free is recognizing that your situation is abusive. Once you acknowledge the reality of the abusive situation, then you can get the help you need. Signs of an abusive Partner There are many signs of an abusive partner. The most telling sign is fear of your partner. The Maria Stubbings Story

The family of a woman strangled by her former boyfriend and Refuge, the national domestic violence charity, are calling on the Home Secretary, Theresa May, to set up a Stephen Lawrence-style public inquiry to examine why victims of domestic violence, are still not getting sufficient protection from the police and other government agencies. A highly critical report by the police watchdog was published recently, with the family of Maria telling the Guardian, that nothing short of a formal inquiry would prevent another family having to experience the failures by Essex police, that contributed to her death. Maria was strangled to death and left in the downstairs toilet of her home in Chelmsford, Essex, in December 2008 by her former boyfriend, Marc Chivers. The police knew he had killed before, and that he had served time in prison for assaulting Maria. Yet, by the time that Chivers left prison, Essex police had disabled a panic alarm they had installed in her house, and failed to carry out any risk assessment when they did so one of a number of failings highlighted by the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Manuel Fernandez, Marias brother, said his sister's death must be a "catalyst for change" and an inquiry was needed to make sure that it takes place. "If there was ever a case that is an example of the state failing to protect a woman, then this is the case," he said. "Since Marias death, there has been a degree of rhetoric about how things have changed, and yet, there is a long list of cases like Maria's that continues to grow. How can this continue?" On another occasion, when Maria called for help after Chivers turned up at her home and stole her medication, the report of the incident was downgraded from domestic violence involving a "very high-risk victim" to a "burglary". In the intervening days, police made several ineffectual attempts to contact Maria, including one visit where they turned up at her home to find Chivers in the house, and passed him a note asking for her to call them. When police finally realised the danger Maria was in eight days later they arrived at her home to discover her body hidden under a pile of coats in the downstairs toilet. Chivers was still in the house with Marias 15-year-old son, Bengi, whom he was closely watching in case the boy found his mother's body. Bengi now 19, said: "It is horrific to discover the extent of the police failings and hard to understand how they got it so wrong. The risk to my mum was clear. I don't want other women and other children to go through an experience like that. We all deserve help and protection when we're in danger and they knew the danger."

Physical abuse and domestic violence When people talk about domestic violence, they are often referring to the physical abuse of a spouse or intimate partner. Physical abuse is the use of physical force against someone in a way that injures or endangers that person. Physical assault or battering is a crime, whether it occurs inside or outside of the family. Sexual abuse is a form of physical abuse Any situation in which you are forced to participate in unwanted, unsafe, or degrading sexual activity is sexual abuse. Forced sex, even by a spouse or intimate partner with whom you also have consensual sex, is an act of aggression and violence. Furthermore, people whose partners abuse them physically and sexually are at a higher risk of being seriously injured or killed.
Emotional abuse: Its a bigger problem than you think

Emotional abuse: When people think of domestic abuse, they often picture battered women (and men) who have been physically assaulted. But not all abusive relationships involve violence. Just because youre not battered and bruised doesnt mean youre not being abused. Many men and women suffer from emotional abuse, which is no less destructive. Unfortunately, emotional abuse is often minimized or overlookedeven by the person being abused.

The incidents of physical abuse seem minor when compared to those you have read about, seen on television or heard other women talk about. There isnt a better or worse form of physical abuse; you can be severely injured as a result of being pushed, for example. The incidents of physical abuse have only occurred one or two times in the relationship. Studies indicate that if your spouse/partner has injured you once, it is likely he will continue to physically assault you. The physical assaults stopped when you became passive and gave up your right to express yourself as you desire, to move about freely and see others, and to make decisions. It is not a victory if you have to give up your rights as a person and a partner in exchange for not being assaulted! There has not been any physical violence. Many women are emotionally and verbally assaulted. This can be as equally frightening and is often more confusing to try to understand.
Warning signs of physical violence People who are being physically abused may: M Have frequent injuries, with the excuse of accidents M Frequently miss work, school, or social occasions, without explanation M Dress in clothing designed to hide bruises or scars (e.g. wearing long sleeves in the summer or sunglasses indoors) Warning signs of isolation People who are being isolated by their abuser may: M Be restricted from seeing family and friends M Rarely go out in public without their partner M Have limited access to money, credit cards, or the car The psychological warning signs of abuse People who are being abused may: M Have very low self-esteem, even if they used to be confident M Show major personality changes (e.g. an outgoing person becomes withdrawn) M Be depressed, anxious, or suicidal
SPEAK UP if you suspect domestic violence or abuse..

If you suspect that someone you know is being abused, speak up! If youre hesitating telling yourself that its none of your business, you might be wrong, or the person might not want to talk about it keep in mind that expressing your concern will let the person know that you care and may even save his or her life. Talk to the person in private and let him or her know that youre concerned. Point out the things youve noticed that make you worried. Tell the person that youre there, whenever he or she feels ready to talk. Reassure the person that youll keep whatever is said between the two of you, and let him or her know that youll help in any way you can.

Remember, abusers are very good at controlling and manipulating their victims. People who have been emotionally abused or battered are depressed, drained, scared, ashamed, and confused. They need help to get out, yet theyve often been isolated from their family and friends. By picking up on the warning signs and offering support, you can help them escape an abusive situation and begin healing. Help For Abused Men If you're a man in an abusive relationship, it's important to know that you're not alone. It happens to men from all cultures and all walks of life. Figures suggest that as many as one in three victims of domestic violence are male. However, men are often reluctant to report abuse by women because they feel embarrassed, or they fear they won't be believed, or worse, that police will assume that since they're male they are the perpetrator of the violence and not the victim. An abusive wife or partner may hit, kick, bite, punch, spit, throw things, or destroy your possessions. To make up for any difference in strength, she may attack you while you're asleep or otherwise catch you by surprise. She may also use a weapon, such as a gun or knife, or strike you with an object, abuse or threaten your children, or harm your pets. Of course, domestic abuse is not limited to violence. Your spouse or partner may also: M Verbally abuse you, belittle you, or humiliate you in front of friends, colleagues, or family, or on social media sites. M Be possessive, act jealous, or harass you with accusations of being unfaithful. M Take away your car keys or medications, try to control where you go and who you see. M Try to control how you spend money or deliberately default on joint financial obligations. M Make false allegations about you to your friends, employer, or the police, or find other ways to manipulate and isolate you. M Threaten to leave you and prevent you from seeing your kids if you report the abuse. SMART GROWING
This month I'm going to look at ways you can sow and grow more effectively. Make some room With small seeds it's difficult to space them correctly when you sow especially if you've had little gardeners helping out. When the seedlings are big enough to handle it's a good idea to do some 'thinning'. This means pulling out a few of the seedlings so you have the correct gap between the plants giving them enough space to grow. If you wait until they're a reasonable size, you can actually eat your 'thinnings' - for example most tender veg leaves will taste delicious in salad and this also let's you sample your produce without having to wait so long. Just make sure you or the children press down on the soil either side as you remove the seedling - this will stop you accidentally removing other seedlings as the roots dislodge more soil. Little and often It can be very tempting to sow lots of seeds in one go, but it makes a lot more sense to sow a few every week or two so that you don't find all your crops are ready to eat at the same time. It's a good idea to decide with the children on a day each week to sow a few more seeds - declaring 'Sowing Sunday' for example - and this will also mean they will be able to harvest vegetables from the garden for longer too.
You can also teach children the best way to water: Water first thing in the morning or in the late afternoon/evening as less water will be lost by evaporation BUT if you see a plant wilting, water straightaway Plants drink in through their roots so water the ground, not the leaves It is better to soak the ground thoroughly once a week rather than just wet the surface every day - this encourages the plants to grow deep roots Pots dry out quite quickly so need to be watered more often than crops in the ground and daily in hot sunny weather
Good companions Some plants are good to have around your vegetable crops. For example if you plant Pot Marigolds, they not only look colourful, their smell puts off aphids which might feed on your crops. They also attract hoverflies, which then feed on aphids so further help keep NEXT MONTH: Herbs and Edible Flowers these pests under control. Hoverflies have similar colouring to wasps so it's worth explaining the difference to children to make sure they're not frightened. Another trick is to plant very smelly plants near to your carrots. The scent disguises the smell of the carrots which outfoxes the carrot fly who might otherwise lay their eggs in your crop. Onions, Spring Onions or chives work brilliantly for this. You could let the children sniff the plants and decide which they think is the strongest smell and therefore the most effective. Other companions you can try: Borage near squash plants are supposed to improve their growth and flavour Basil is a good companion to tomatoes as they apparently improve flavour and deter pests. They also taste wonderful together when eaten Nasturtiums attract aphids away from other plants Being water wise It's good to teach children early on about the need to conserve water. If you can set up a water butt at home to harvest rainwater that's a great start. Just make sure that the butt is high enough off the ground that the children can easily fit their watering cans underneath.

July project: Climbing Bean Archway
With a few magic beans you can rival Jack and his beanstalk by creating this spectacular archway. You can watch as the bean seeds sprout and then race up to the top of the bamboo canes in just a few short weeks. Not only will your bean plants give you pretty flowers and delicious beans but you can also use the archway to create an impressive entrance to a vegetable garden or play area.
You will need: Pen and card Scissors 2 tall terracotta pots at least 25cm in diameter Old newspaper Masking tape Green emulsion paint Large and small paintbrush White acrylic paint pen Gravel or small stones Potting compost Watering can 4 bamboo canes Garden twine or string Runner or green bean seeds (we used Phaseolus coccineus 'Celebration')
1. 2. Draw a bean pod and leaf shapes on two pieces of card and carefully cut them out to form your stencils. With your pot placed on some old newspaper, use the masking tape to position the stencil on the pot and paint over the pattern with the green emulsion paint using the large paintbrush. Allow the paint to dry and then continue to paint pods and leaves over the whole pot. Use the green paint and the small paintbrush to add the stems and tendrils that link the bean leaves and pods. Add veins and other finer details with the white acrylic paint pen. Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the second pot. When there is no danger of frost you can plant your beans outside. Place your pots where you want the archway to be (this needs to be somewhere quite sunny) and then put some gravel or stones in the bottom of each before filling with compost, firming it down as you go. Water in well with the watering can. Push two bamboo canes into each pot on opposite sides of each other. Tie the first pair of bamboo canes together tightly at the top using twine or string and then do the same with the other pair. Tie the two pairs of canes together to form the central point of the archway. With your finger, make a hole in the compost next to one of the canes. The holes should be three times deeper than the beans are wide. Drop the bean in the hole, cover over and firm down. Do this again on the other side of the cane, so that you will have two bean plants for each cane. Repeat for the other three uprights. To help the plants start climbing, gently tie in the stems to the canes using twine or string in a figure-of-eight knot. This will stop the stems rubbing on the cane and damaging the plant. As the bean plants grow they will climb the canes until they reach the top, creating a leafy archway.

Fun, Fun, Fun! With Cbeebies Presenter Sid Sloane

What have been your funniest moments on screen and on stage? I have had quite a few. They are usually to do with corpsing - losing all sense of reality and finding the most benign thing funny, to such an extent of being completely unable to carry on performing the scene or link. In more recent months, I was in the CBeebies studio with Andy Day and Cerrie Burnell, Andy had to lie on the floor and wriggle like a worm saying wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. Another time, all presenters were in filming for Christmas and the giggles kicked in. The director was taking it far too seriously which just made it ten times worse. I guess you had to be there. One occasion, for the first time since I started my career with CBeebies, I had to leave the studio and someone else had to film the link.

The current average cost of childcare is circa 7,500 per year*. Busy Bees Benefits believes the new scheme should relate to average childcare costs, therefore the 6,000 capped limit is already out of date. It will take over two years to implement the new scheme and by this time the gap between the 6,000 capped amount and the average cost of childcare will have widened further. The principle reason childcare costs rise each year is the increase in staff costs. Therefore, in order to preserve the value of the Tax-free Childcare scheme, there should be a commitment from Government to review and increase the cap in line with the annual increases to minimum wage. Hattie says, No, not marbles, Mummy - meatballs

Weve only ever had a tiny freezer: I aspire to the space to house a chest freezer or, even better, my dream kitchen would boast, pride of place, an American style fridge freezer. Hattie is a big fan of pushing her cup up to collect the ice. I love buying up good quality minced beef or lamb when its on offer so I have it to hand for anything from everyday bolognaise to something a bit more jazzy, like these meatballs, which go down a treat with most little people to whom theyre offered. Little hands enjoy trying to roll the raw meat into balls. Messy, but unquestionably good fun. In a large bowl, mix together 1 lb minced beef its actually better to use 20% fat minced meat for meatballs, save your lean stuff for other occasions, the meatballs are too dry otherwise with half a large/1 small onion, chopped as finely as you can. Stir in a few tablespoons chopped parsley, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, half teaspoon ground ginger, 1 teaspoon ground cumin, salt and pepper. Mix it all up and knead to a paste.
Roll it into balls about the size of large marbles this is the bit Hattie enjoys, which is great as I dont: as she gets better at it, Ill leave her to it! Heat a glug of vegetable oil in the bottom of a large saucepan and fry the meatballs until they are browned; remove. In the same large saucepan, heat a glug more vegetable oil and fry the other half of the onion/another small onion (chopped); add 2 cloves chopped garlic; fry until soft. Add two tins of chopped tomatoes, a tablespoon or two of tomato paste; a teaspoon of sugar.
A great addition is a good glug of pomegranate sauce this is fabulous in all tomato based sauces. You can buy it from the international food sections of large supermarkets, or from middle eastern food shops, alone it has a sharp, lemony edge to it and it gives a lovely rich flavour to sauces: in our house, we call it magic sauce. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer this lot up for about half an hour. At the end of the cooking time, return the meatballs to the sauce and cook for a good 5 to 10 minutes until they are cooked through (the cooking time will depend on how big your marbles are!) If you have a herb garden, throw in a handful or so of chopped parsley and/ or mint at the end.
Buy parsley in bunches from international food shops if and when you can: herbs will keep for about two weeks in the fridge if you wash and dry them and store them in a tupperware box so they can be used for the meatballs. When you are adding fresh herbs to a sauce which will be heated, you can use them from frozen: wash your herbs and chop them up, then freeze them in freezer bags and just take a handful to throw into things like this sauce at the end of cooking.

Hattie says, Apples mean apple crumble with custard!; Peter says: Oh-oh-oh! Hatties Kitchen is back! We will soon be moving into August blackberries shortly followed by apple season - that has to mean crumbles. Once the juicy blackberries appear, this is the pudding to make. Add apples when they start to appear in early autumn - cookers and coxes work just as well. This is definitely the perfect time of year to make a feast from nature's bounty, with just a few store cupboard ingredients thrown in. You can use this crumble topping with pretty much any fruit that takes your fancy underneath it
What could be better or quicker to rustle up than apple crumble? Apparently the only thing that beats hot crumble with hot custard is leftover cold crumble with cold custard. I beg to differ: give it to me steaming hot with lashings of cream. You choose and let us know how you get along. Use whatever you have, just remember that cookers will need a bit of extra sugar sprinkled over them to off set their tart flavour. This quantity will serve about 6 8. We used a mixture of cooking and eating apples. I peeled and cored 700 gr / 1.5 lb apples and Hattie set to work chopping them up with her special knife. We all threw these into the crumble dish (use a similar size dish as you would use for making a lasagne for 4 6 people) and Hattie added about 225 gr / half a pound blackberries. As we were using some eating apples and blackberries, we definitely didnt need any extra sugar the addition of blackberries to your apple crumble obviously makes it much sweeter. Hattie sprinkled a little cinnamon over the top. As you will see from the pictures, weve started to use our old fashioned scales which are perfect for getting pre-schoolers to start to understand a bit about weights and measures. So, we weighed out the ingredients for the crumble topping: 250 gr / 9 oz self raising flour, 125 gr / 4.5 oz butter cold from the fridge and 110 gr / 4 oz caster sugar. We decided to use the whizzy thing, (mixer to you and me) to make the topping, though feel free to get stuck in and rub the fat into the flour with your fingertips which is clearly going to be much more fun! To make it in the mixer, simple put all three ingredients in and blitz until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Hattie then spooned the crumble topping onto the top of the fruit and smoothed it all down. Hey presto, one crumble ready to go into a hot oven it will need about 30 40 minutes at 200 degree centigrade. You will know its ready when the top is crispy and golden coloured and the juices from the fruits will probably be bubbling a little in places ahh, autumn at its best.

Hattie (looking at the cooking hob) says: And the red light says its hot, hot now so you dont touch it! Minced meat is great, but we get stuck in a rut and I turn to the old stalwarts, spaghetti bolognese or chilli con carne, when we need to rustle up a quick and tasty meal in the week. So this week I decided to revive my childhood again and make some of my grandfathers Egyptian family favourites. The beauty of Arab food is that the family recipes really are so easy so much so that I hardly dare call this a recipe it literally took Hattie and me 10 minutes to put together, and most of that was spent stirring! We made it in the morning and just made the rice to accompany it at teatime perfect for weekday meals if you are rushing about after school but need something on the table for hungry tummies when you all arrive back home. This was a really good meal to make with Hattie to introduce her to using the hobs I explained how hot they get before we started and made sure that she knew what she was and wasnt allowed to touch. Because this is such a fool proof recipe, I was able to watch her the whole time to make sure that little hands stayed away from hot rings.
You need lean minced beef for this it is such a simple meal with only three real ingredients that you dont want the mince to be gristly. Heat a scant tablespoon of oil in a large casserole or saucepan. Add 1 lb minced beef when the oil is hot. Hattie stirred this with my guidance until the mince was brown. Sprinkle with a little salt (you do need to use salt because of the spinach). Now Hattie counted out 10 balls of frozen spinach see TIPS below and added these one by one to the saucepan. She stirred it all again, gently, until the spinach had cooked. You can add a tablespoon of water at this point if it looks like it is too dry. I squeezed the juice of one large lemon and Hattie poured it over the spinach and minced meat you do need the sharp lemon flavour in this meal it works so well with the spinach. Serve with white rice and plain yoghurt, and have another lemon ready in case it needs a little more.
Tips
This served three hungry adults and one smaller tummy. I think this quantity would be perfect for two adults and two children. Hatties great grandfather would probably have served it with some piping hot pitta breads on the side, which would always make it go further. I have made this with fresh spinach before, but it actually works better with frozen spinach partly because it is so finely chopped. Its good when a meal actually works better with the easy option!

Rather than harping on about tidiness, emphasize the desire to provide more space to play. Dont just talk, show them what theyll gain from decluttering. Put on some music, for example and talk about making room to dance. In other words, help children to visualise direct and immediate benefits. 2. Be PARTICULAR Its easy to become distracted so try to be systematic, focusing on one specific task at a time. Take everything off one shelf, for example and agree not to play with anything else in the room until youve sorted out the books into piles of what to keep and what to give away. Take it step-by-step and remind the children of particular goals. Their concentration (and yours) is likely to be limited so define bite-sized projects and dont try to do too much at a time. Even if you only manage to declutter one shelf per session, it will be a step in the right direction. Be PURPOSEFUL Decluttering can be daunting at the best of times; it can also seem threatening if the focus is on separation. Children (and adults) can often be encouraged to declutter by finding purposeful ways to part from things that they dont use. Its vital to show respect for their personal belongings - dont talk about chucking out or getting rid of anything. It can also help if family members together choose a specific charity to support through donating things to a charity shop or by doing a car boot sale. Another option is to sell things online, perhaps with a view to saving up for special outing (preferably NOT to buy more stuff!) Find PLACES Clutter often piles up because of indecision you may not have decided where to put dressing-up clothes, for example, or how to organise piles or board games. Ask the children to help you allocate a storage space. Then sort things and encourage them to be selective, limiting the number of toys to what will actually fit into specific spaces. If you have too many board games to squeeze into cupboard, consider picking out a few favourites and donating the rest. Aim for PROGRESS rather than PERFECT It can take time to sort and to decide what to reduce, reuse, recycle, donate or discard. Be realistic about what you can achieve in each session. Rather than aiming for perfection, make an effort to notice and celebrate the progress youre making. And remember to stick to positive expressions; point out how much space youve created rather than what youve managed to throw out.

To be blunt, theres not much point embarking on a radical make-over unless youre also prepared to rethink routines that involve you and all the family. And in order to create effective changes, its obviously essential to not only engage the youngsters but also to enthuse them. So here are my top five tips for motivating and mobilising youngsters to get involved in the process. While this advice is aimed primarily at pre-schoolers, it can be adapted quite successfully with older children, too. 1. Be POSITIVE Its more than likely that youve tried to enlist your children to put their toys away and its possible that youve already used carrots (bribes and rewards) or sticks (threats of penalties). Like the proverbial donkey, children are only likely to shift stubborn habits when they are motivated to do so! A vital first step is to generate enthusiasm by focusing on positive goals what do you want to achieve and how will they benefit?

I absolutely love smellies! Anyone who knows me, knows I love anything fruity smelling or lavender. Hmmmmm It was fabulous then that we were sent a selection of the new range of shower gels and hand lotions by Woods of Windsor to try. Originating from an 18th century apothecary, situated behind Windsor Castle, Woods of Windsor is an aspirational range of high quality, natural beauty products inspired by the nostalgic romanticism, charm and wildness of an English country garden. The scents are truly beautiful and whilst having a steaming hot shower with the shower gel it seemed to fill the whole bathroom with a deep fragrance that lingered both in the air but also on the skin. Definitely something lovely for mum to enjoy and I imagine that filling a hot bath with this would be just amazing, something to give mum a little bit of luxury time and pampering, well for the 5 minutes she has free. Emily: Little grippers are like hold-ups but for kids. I tried the socks on both my 2 year old and my 3 month old girls and thought they were great! Even with repeated wiggling from my 3 month old, they stated on all day and my 2 year old who always has to have her socks pulled right up loved them, the ladies at her nursery thought they were fantastic too. They did leave a little mark where they'd been but I think that's to be expected with anything that's stayed put all day! All in all, they are a great invention and well worth their reasonable price tag.

Eve: We loved the spoon, but not as a spoon as a toy! WOOPS!!! Think it might be better for younger children. As an almost 2 yr old we didn't want to actually use it ourselves and I'm not allowed to help in the feeding process, but as a toy its great!! She liked the spoon too lol, one good thing about it past the fact that it's a fun shape is that the shape of it means that young babies can't grab the spoon and ram the whole thing down their throats so it's a good idea for first self feeds too - brody tries to shove everything down her throat but she was fine playing with the aeroplane =) My little one is obsessed with aeroplanes and in the midst of a mini tantrum I suddenly remembered I had these still in my bag fro the focus group. Instantly the tantrum stopped and she happily played until we got home. Once I had dinner ready, she questioned non stop whether she could use the spoon, which of course she did, and absolutely loved it! A massive thumbs up from us and for 3.79 for a pack of two -great value for money!

Having a 2 year old and a baby means that a bouncer is a must have so when I got asked to try out the Nuna leaf I wondered whether my 3 month old would like it as much with the swing motion rather than the bounce but she loves it. It is best for putting her in to go to sleep rather than just to sit in, however, it is a comfy little chair to put her in and she gurgles away just taking things in. The swing/sway motion is not electronic which means there's no faffing around with batteries, you just give the swing a gentle push and it sways, soothing your baby to sleep.

The leaf is very good in design, the base is sturdy and it can be used to swing or just to sit, the straps are very secure, the only negative point to that is because they are Velcro, if you put your baby in asleep and have to undo the Velcro it can make quite a noise undoing it but is a very minor point. The fabric is soft, organic cotton and is ideal for sleep time as it doesn't get too warm, it seems breathable and the leaf fabric part can be taken out and washed easily. The look of the swing is modern and blends in well with furniture around it creating a stylish addition to the house rather than some of the bouncers and swings you can get. I like the fact that the swing will last from birth right up to 60kg and can see her enjoying the motion of the swing for a long time. You can take the base away from the seat for storage or travelling but personally I think it's a little bulky for travelling I would get a specific travel bouncer if I was going to be travelling around with it often. Overall the Nuna Leaf is a great addition to the home, it makes getting our baby to sleep easier and she seems to like the motion, it is well made and looks great, we've had a lot of comments on it when people come round. The price point is expensive but for the craftsmanship and quality of the swing I think it sits well with other bouncers and swings on the market. I would spend the extra money to get something that looks like it will withstand the test of time and is more versatile than some other bouncers and swings. I just wish they made an adult version, I could just see me relaxing in one of those, being soothed to sleep!

Is it easy to handle / use? The instructions werent the easiest to understand, but a quick Youtube search had us watching a two minute how to guide (in French I think). The simple demonstration steps enabled us to install this within 5 minutes if that! Is it cost effective? The car seat is 400, and before anyone says oh my gosh thats expensive this does last from birth to approximately 4 years old, REARWARD facing! The technology in this car seat make every penny worth it and everyone Ive shown it to, LOVES IT! How easy was it to put together? Completely straight forward. As I was reviewing it for my 2 year old, we simply had to remove the inner liner and tuck away the harness in the specially hidden compartment. How practical is it? The Sirona exudes practicality! With an amazing 360 swivel technology that allows you to turn the car seat to face you whilst putting your child in and then being able to tilt her either which way, it was amazing. As she didnt use the harness straps, she had the bumper bar go across her. This was the easiest to adjust and fasten that I have seen to date. With seat-belt fastenings on either side it was a simple case of putting her in and clicking the bumper bar in place. We have reviewed other car seats with bumper bars which she hated vehemently and would cry in frustration, but with this one, there wasnt even a whimper! I think this as been the most comfortable car seat she has experienced. Anything Else? Cybex are renowned for their safety features and the Sirona is no exception! Seat to chassis technology creates a direct link between the car and the seat and on impact activates at the earliest stage of the impact absorption process. You can also purchase this is many colours! What age is it suitable from? Birth to approximately 4 years old. Any negatives? I know that some people will see the cost as being expensive but if you spread the cost over the first four years of your childs life then 100 per year really isnt bad at all. The only negative was having to give it back at the end of review.
Is it easy to handle / use? Very! The easywalker is a sleek pushchair that handles very well. Very easy to manoeuvre. It is a stylish, compact, off road pushchair with innovative design features such as a slide away hood. What car seat is the Easywalker compatible with? The Easywalker is compatible with the Maxi-Cosi carseats, you just need to purchase the adapters. Is it cost effective? The pushchair is expensive at around 609.99 but you can adapt this with all the relevant attachments to make it into a travel system (additional costs will apply). It is a stunning pushchair though and a true Brit will love the new collaboration with Mini and their patriotic designs! Definitely one for the new royal baby !! How practical is it? Nice, lightweight and easy to use, folds compactly too, so great for most boot spaces. Will the system fit into the boot of a standard family car? Yes, it actually fits into any boot - even a mini! Definitely a huge plus for space limited families (which is most)! What age is it suitable from? If you purchase the maxi-cosi car seat and adapters etc then this becomes suitable from birth. Anything Else? There are many different colours and accessories available with the Easywalker including carrycot. Any negatives? Apart from perhaps the cost their arent really any negatives on the Easywalker.

The Colt System
Onyx - Poppy Red Stages
Is it easy to handle / use? Fantastic! Ive always been a huge fan of the Hauck brand and it is one of the few buggies that I can put together without having to look at instructions! What car seat is the Colt system compatible with? The unit comes as a complete set so no need to purchase the car seat separately. Is it cost effective? Hauck for me have always been fantastically priced and the Colt Travel System is no exception. You get the complete package, car seat, rain covers, foot muff and a generously sized shopping basket! How easy was it to put the Colt together? Like I mentioned earlier, I didnt even need to read the instructions on this, it is so straight forward to put together and to open and close. I had it ready to go in less than 5 minutes from opening the box. How practical is it? Ideal for almost every family. It collapses to a good size and easily fits into the boot of our Corsa, which at best is pushed for storage! The colt is very easy to push and handle and for me it sits at a nice height. Will the system fit into the boot of a standard family car? No problem at all! We had ample space still remaining for shopping. What age is it suitable from? Birth and upwards thanks to being bought as a complete travel system. Any negatives? My daughter is extremely tall for her age and again we found that she was a little bit too tall for this pushchair footrest. As long as this was pushed all the way down she was extremely happy and very comfortable.
Is it easy to handle / use? Yes. Very sturdy. This really took me by surprise for a stroller, I hadnt expected it to be so good. I guess by the brand name I should have known better! What car seat is the Onyx pushchair compatible with? The pushchair is compatible with the Aton infant carrier range, including the newest edition the Aton 3, 165 Is it cost effective? The pushchair is only 190! This pushchair has an amazing folding canopy which almost covers the entire seat area really protecting your child from the elements. How easy was it to put the Onyx together? Couldnt have been easier, straight out of the box! We like simplicity very much! How practical is it? Great for grabbing a lightweight option to the more typical travel system. My niece was the little one trialling this one and being very active she loved to climb in and out of it a lot! Will the stroller fit into the boot of a standard family car? As a stroller this is fantastic for fitting into small spaces - definitely an advantage! What age is it suitable from? Birth and upwards if you buy the compatible car seat and attachments. Any negatives? We found that my niece would fall off the edge of the front if she climbed to quickly into it, the adjustable footrest would drop and not stay clicked into place.
Is it easy to handle / use? Very. - Extremely straight forward! This took less than a minute to install and was easy to take out and install in a friends car for a day trip! Is it cost effective? Anybody not familiar with the Joie brand should be! They are another firm favourite of Baby Buzz Magazine for their cost effectiveness and style. The car seat is no exception and is more than competitive with the big name brands currently available! How easy was it to put together? Again we are trialling it with my little girl so all we had to do was take the newborn liner out. How practical is it? Ideal for every family. Cost effective, safety concerns taken into account and comfortable. This car seat is incredible in that it is suitable from birth to approximately 7 years of age! Steel enhanced frame for structural integrity during impact and to keep centre of gravity low and stable. It also features a hideaway compartment for the harness when the child is old enough to use the car seat belts across the unit. What age is it suitable from? Birth and upwards thanks to the inner liner that comes with car seat. This seat has 4 recline positions so newborns will be super, super comfortable. Any negatives? The only small comment we would say is that the headrest on the car seat and a little too close and so little one looks a little crammed in. She doesnt appear to mind it all and she falls asleep very comfortably. Perhaps it is just my perception of the headrest.

Before a few weeks ago, Id never heard of Jo Jingles. Within the space of a few weeks, Ive attended a class and seen it publicised everywhere. So what is Jo Jingles all about you might ask? Well quite simply it introduces music, singing and movement to our pre-schoolers. This isnt anything like what you would imagine, nothing is regimented or made to feel like our little ones are being bamboozled into doing something they simply dont want to do. I was introduced to Ursula, who runs the classes in Cheshunt, Ware, Hertford, Hoddesdon and surrounding areas and decided to take my little one along to see what it was all about. I was amazed to see 17 children present. The atmosphere in the room was very much alive and the children were all very keento get started. With many years experience working as a nursery nurse and teacher in Rome, Ursula is thrilled to be running the Jo Jingles classes and brings a huge amount of exhuberance to the class. With a strong voice and commanding presence the children all warmed very much to her, and whilst my little girl was quite shy at first, within no time at all she was happy to be jumping about and participating in everything going on. The group consists of various activities involving many accessories and props and the music is loud whilst not unbearable and Ursula continues to make herself heard aiming clear instructions to the children. Whilst this all just sounds like the children are having fun, the children also learn various coordination skills through interactive play and repeating the movements as shown by Ursula. Definitely something I would recommend taking your toddler to. There are now over 100 Jo Jingles franchisees running classes in more than 600 centres throughout the UK, Ireland and the company launched in Australia in October 2010 in Perth and Sydney. Jo Jingles classes are fun & educational, structured according to age and introduce different educational themes each week. The aim is to give babies and toddlers from 3 months to school-age a fun introduction to music through the use of songs, nursery rhymes, percussion instruments, movement and dance, sound games & stories.

The Mummy-to-Be
my stash so far I headed to Primark who, I discovered, do not have a maternity line. Undeterred, I decided to have a poke around some of the larger-sized clothes to see if I could adapt any to accommodate my growing bump. I bought a lovely dark blue and cream spotty dress a couple of sizes larger than usual, but as it came with a cute belt I knew Id be able to get quite a bit of use out of it by adjusting it as my waistline changed. I also bought a pretty cream silky blouse that looked good while baggy, but could accommodate a few months worth of expansion. I nipped into TopShop and stocked up on leggings as I find theyre good to wear under some of my billowy pre-pregnancy dresses that have started doubling up as tops. Now that I was more aware of my size, I felt confident enough to continue my shopping online. I had a forage on the New Look website and found a couple of lovely dresses in the sale both under 15, and I also discovered the Sraphine website. Theyre a little pricier than New Look and H&M, but they had plenty of gorgeous clothes in the sale so I treated myself to a dress and a cardigan. There are also bargains to be had on the Isabella Oliver and ASOS websites. Phew! I was expecting lots of elasticated horrors, but Im pretty pleased with my maternity stash - lets hope I get lots of use out of them. Whatever happens, I know now that Ill be ebaying them afterwards! Ive had plenty of use out of the Primark dress so far, including wearing it to a wedding...14 well spent! Our next challenge was to buy a buggy. Once again, I was determined not to spend an absolute fortune. I wanted a decent-quality travel system that would be good for getting on and off public transport in London, but that would be sturdy enough to last.
Trimester 3
Well, here we are, well past the half way mark and baby is progressing nicely. She seems to have taken growing extremely seriously and Im getting bigger by the day. At our latest appointment with the midwives we discovered that baby has managed to turn herself the wrong way up and is now comfortably sitting in the breech position. She has plenty of time to turn, thankfully, and Ill be asking bump nicely to cooperate. Were at about 28 weeks now and have started to panic about what to buy. As well as needing the obvious things like a buggy, a cot and lots of baby outfits with ears on, Ive also been bursting out of my pre-pregnancy clothes like the Incredible Hulk with PMT. New outfits were needed, but being notoriously tight-fisted, I couldnt bear the thought of spending a fortune on clothes that Id only be wearing for a few months. Initially I looked on ebay, but Im never quite sure of my size at the best of times, so trying to guage what size I might be with a growing bump and possible additional weight gain proved too much like hard work. Most of the clothes had lots of bids on them, and were going for relatively near the face value, so I figured itd be better to head to the shops and try a few bits on. My first port of call was H&M. Id seen a few nice pieces on their website, and with lots of their clothes being under 20 I was keen to investigate. I wasnt disappointed; they had plenty of good staples like shirts and black trousers great for work. They also had some nice dresses, including a very sweet stripey cap-sleeved number for 9.99 which I snapped up. I waddled into New Look next, keen to pick up some plain tops and jeans. Once again, I was pleasantly surprised. They had lots of dresses, tops and trousers and all were very reasonably priced. I picked up a pair of under-bump jeans in the sale for 10, and some cotton vests and tops which were all 3 for 2. Delighted with
My boyfriend and I merrily set off for a sortie around Mothercare and Mamas and Papas. We didnt stay merry for long... The choice! The options! The specifications! We didnt know where to start. As my chap and I work different schedules, we dont often have time off together so we had a relatively small window of time to come to a decision. Three wheels or four? How heavy should the chassis be? What colour to choose (bearing in mind our baby is likely to have bright red hair)? I decided to have a nosey at the Which? website (thank God for smartphones) and look at own-brand systems with good safety records. This still didnt stop us from spending four hours (with boyfriend nursing a hangover) pushing a variety of Urbos,Bugaboos, Stokkes, Solas, Silver Crosses and Maclarens (amongst others) around various shop floors while being chased by exhausted-looking shop assistants. My boyfriend, being a car-obsessed architect wanted to buy a Stokke, but lovely as they are, I couldnt bring myself to spend more than the price of a secondhand car on baby transport. Finally, beaten, we opted for a Mamas and Papas own-brand travel system. It wasnt the cheapest, but it was one of the lightest and the pram attachment was in the sale (I cant seem to stop being thrifty). It also had excellent feedback on Which? and Im a sucker for a decent safety review. After spending a further forty-five minutes fighting with the boot and the back seat of the car (huge boxes!), as well as each other, we finally set off home. I felt a real sense of achievement, but I wouldnt recommend a going buggy shopping with an angry ginger man with a hangover to anyone. He has since cheered up, opened all the boxes and put the system together. This is great, but now we have to spend the next twelve weeks until baby appears stepping over it. Fun! So, now Ive got some clothes that fit and baby has a car seat for when she arrives, all that remains for us to buy is...everything else! Oh dear. Thank God my mum has gone into new-baby overdrive and started shopping like shes single-handedly trying to get the UK out of recession. I wonder how many pairs of furry rabbit bootees will fit into a tiny one-bed flat. Well soon find out!

For me the important thing is that whatever school The Queen of Sheba gets into it has to have at least not been written off by the all knowing Ofsted and have some positive anecdotal support from other parents. After all I want what every body else wants for their kids: the chance to equip them with the best tools for dealing with life, but if I am honest I dont think I need to worry This is probably the only moment in my life where I feel the same way I did too much because I am fairly certain that by the time The Queen of Sheba when faced with my options in secondary school. For those not in the know an SEN Statement means that any school you approach must accept your child unless they can show good reason as to why they can not give you a place. This of course is not actually a golden ticket as given the choice between having an SEN Statement for any school and having a child that could actually attend said school unassisted there is no choice. So our Statement merely insures our boy goes somewhere that he will actually benefit. This Statement is also not something that just falls fully formed into your lap from the powers that be. In our case, and unfortunately a large number of others that I have spoken to, the only way to insure that the Statement had the correct educational requirements for our son was to go with legal representation for meetings with the local council. This may seem a little strong but actually the Statement is a legal document of what is required by the named child to meet all their educational needs and of course the council foots the bill for this education so sometimes they try to skimp a little, its hard to believe but councils do in fact cut corners every now and then, some of you will be stunned by this. Our son ended up with a great placement in a specialist autism unit within a mainstream primary school which means he gets all of his educational needs met and also gets social interaction with kids his own age who have no additional needs. For The Queen of Sheba it has been different, we have had to do the whole school visit thing. The regular evening game of Ofsted Top Trumps. I have subtly probed other parents as to their choices and attempted to gauge what sort of demand there will be for any of the possibles in our area but of course demand often outstrips supply and the first choice we have is a school that only takes 27 kids, a single form entry as we call it on the street.
