The Netherlands soccer match for charity: Henry Schein supports orphanage Dutch leading supplier for medical and dental products supports Team Schein Member engagement for a good cause Almere, 1st July 2013 After the devastating tsunami of 2004 in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Jan and Ellen Rijkes - both born on Java, Indonesia and now living in Culemborg, The Netherlands - wanted to reach out and help the people. Shortly after, they heard about the Yayasan Sahabat Manusia Pambutuh Cinta (HAMBA) orphanage in Pakem (formerly known as, Yayasan Aulia). The orphanage gives a warm home to orphans and underprivileged children, and guides them through adolescence. Since then, Jan and Ellen have been supporting this orphanage tremendously. They are known as Oma Ellen and Opa Jan (explanation: Granny Ellen and Grandpa Jan) and are always warmly welcomed when they visit Yayasan Hamba. In early May of this year, after many years of support, Jan (78) and Ellen (81) went on what might be their last trip to Indonesia to once more see their kids. Their three biological children joined their parents on this trip for the first time, taking their share in the family project. When Henry Schein in The Netherlands heard about this engagement from its employee Erwin Rijkes, son of Ellen and Jan, they immediately decided to support this family engagement. The medical and the dental team of Henry Schein B.V., one of the leading suppliers of health-care products and services for dental and medical professionals in The Netherlands, donated products such as, kids tooth brushes and tooth paste - enough for the next few months - and toys for the children. They also donated instruments for medical treatment, products for personal hygiene and first aid kits. This was a lifetime experience. I will never forget the look in the childrens eyes when we arrived at the orphanage. Not to mention their enthusiasm when we accepted their challenge for a game of soccer: the Indonesian team vs. the Dutch team. By the way, the kids won, said Erwin Rijkes after his return. It is such an intense moment, when you realize that you can make a difference in these peoples lives with what in our eyes looks like so little. I am really grateful for Henry Scheins support to our family project and to the Pakem orphanage. Henry Schein Cares, the companys corporate social responsibility, is trying to improve access to care for underserved and at-risk populations worldwide through three focus areas: health, prevention and treatment, emergency preparedness and relief, and capacity development of health care. Henry Schein Cares not only supports non-for-profit organizations projects in underprivileged communities, but also fosters our Team Schein Members personal engagement in good causes, said Cees Balder, Managing Director of Henry Scheins dental business in The Netherlands. We are delighted to support Erwin and his familys heartfelt project and the Yayasan Hamba orphanage. The Pakem orphanage is also supported by the Dutch Stichting Lestari, in Hoorn.
