t 12 years old, Jennifer wasnt playing with dolls; she was stand- ing on the street corner doing drugs with her friends. Growing up in a single parent home, she met her dad for the first time when she was ten. A few months later he died. Lonely and hurting, she fell into a self-destructive trap, like many others in her community - a world where kids grow up too fast and fall prey to drugs, alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, and violence. While in the streets with her friends, she would watch teens attend the FundaVida youth club and wonder about the group. Curious, she went one night and entered a whole new world - a world where kids play, laugh and learn to enjoy life without drugs. The club coordinator quickly became like a second mom and Jennifer began to share her hurts and fears. Jennifer realized she had been putting her own life in danger: I could have given my body to the wrong person or become addicted to drugs. I could have become pregnant. Before I was never close to my mom, but now we are like best friends. I have started to learn how to honor my mom rather than reject her, thanks to FundaVida. And thats not all Jennifer is learning. After participating in a 3-day backpacking trip, which tested her determination and perseverance, she began to volunteer as a team leader for younger kids. Shes learning how to help others who share a similar past. I feel like God has changed my heart and mind, enabling me to have new thoughts and actions. I have learned to be more patient and more sensitive to others. I want to be an example for other kids. Jennifer is well on her way- instead of looking in from the streets, her life is a living example that real and lasting change is possible.
