WELCOME TO THE GOLDEN APPLE SCHOLARS OF ILLINOIS SUMMER INSTITUTE 2013 Your journey to teach continues.

For the 25th consecutive summer, the Golden Apple Foundation has gathered Scholars from all corners of Illinois to come to Chicago and continue the important study of our teaching profession. In the following pages, you will receive essential procedural information to help you fully appreciate this experience provided you as a Golden Apple Scholar. You should spend time reading this information to learn about Summer Institute procedures and policy, for you will be held responsible for understanding its structure and your responsibilities within it. The first full week of Summer Institute is an introductory week combined with scheduled course work. The initial week will include a variety of experiences, including teambuilding activities with your peers in Reflective Seminar, regular classes, and some special activities. The courses you will be taking follow a regular roster and schedule. The on-site work for Summer Institute in Chicagos schools begins the second week of Summer Institute. DePauls campus and our Summer Institute will be closed July 4 and 5, although you may elect to remain on campus if you wish. The last day of classes and on-site experiences will be Thursday, July 25. Closing ceremonies will be held that night. Move-out day is Friday, July 26 or Saturday morning, July 27. Some particulars about your assigned school: A. Each Scholar is assigned to one Reflective Seminar session and one of approximately thirty Chicago public or private school sites. The dates for Reflective Seminar vary, and you should check carefully with your Reflective Seminar Leader to see when Reflective Seminar meets. On-sites (the schools where you work in the mornings) may have different starting and ending times. Learn the required times depending on your assignment. You are entirely responsible for readying yourselves in the morning to arrive on time for on-site work. Information on bus routes will also be included in this booklet.

As representatives of the Golden Apple Foundation, your work ethic and behavior during your on-site work will be closely monitored. This includes your choice of dress. Details about clothing requirements for working in the schools will be fully explained during our first day orientation. All Scholars are assigned to course experiences, some of which are required and some of which are elected. Availability of instructors and ease of presenting the entire Summer Institute course of study determined the days and hours the classes meet. Errors can occur in the scheduling process, and do let the staff know if you note one. Errors in design will be the only reason to alter a Scholars schedule. Scholars must see and obtain permission from the Summer Institute Directors for any other schedule change. The afternoon of Friday, July 12 will be a day when the representatives of your universities will come to DePaul and meet with you. Scholars should plan to meet with the campus representative on that day from 12:00pm until 1:30pm. Fellows, Liaisons, and Scholars staff will have a Golden Apple office in SAC during Summer Institute. The office phone number will be announced on orientation day. We will also give you emergency and contact phone numbers on orientation day.

GENERAL SUMMER INSTITUTE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES We ask you to please read carefully these pages in this booklet that detail specific Summer Institute policies. While DePaul may have different rules and regulations involving their students, during Summer Institute, we hold you to ours.

1. The Foundation requires Scholar attendance at all

functions of Summer Institute, whether class, on-site activity or official social functions. The exceptions to this policy are:

attendance at university orientations (but only if you have given notification beforehand) medical emergencies requiring a visit to the hospital if you are ill or injured (with verification provided) In the absence of these exceptions, absence or tardiness from a Summer Institute activity will result in a deduction of your stipend. The amount can vary by incident and circumstance for every missed class or for every tardy incident. Only Carolyn Cyriaque or Dannielle Dungey can levy such deductions. The tradition of Summer Institute requires Scholars to be punctual and responsible for their own well-being. To some Scholars, Summer Institute is their first extended time away from home. The social aspects of life in Chicago do at times challenge the responsibilities Scholars shoulder as representatives of the Golden Apple Foundation during Summer Institute. Rising early to be on time for the on-site bus can be a big challenge after a late night. We simply insist that you attend every SI function-- on time, awake, positive, and ready. Accordingly, we will hold you responsible for your actions and decisions while on campus. 1a. In matters concerning dormitory life, SI Residence Director Jennifer Taylor and the other liaisons, work on behalf of the Golden Apple Foundation. Their word in regard

to dorm life at SI is law. Meetings during the first week will orient you to procedures to follow to present the best possible working and social atmosphere for you to attend and learn from Summer Institute. We fully expect you to follow established protocol. 1b. Be careful with your assigned rooms and the materials within them. DePaul will charge the Foundation for any room repair or damage and we will deduct those charges from the stipends of the tenants of that room.

1c. No switching of furniture or room assignments is allowed. Follow the guest procedures and other regulations established to the letter. Your demeanor in the dormitory is as important to us as outside it. Respect one another, as well as each others property.

2. Because during your morning work on site in the Chicago

schools you represent the Golden Apple Foundation, you are required to wear appropriate clothing for your on-site work. Facial piercing other than earrings must be removed. Clothing should not be worn so that undergarments are exposed. Conservative dress and adornment is an absolute requirement. This stipulation must be strictly adhered. Any violation of clothing requirements will result in a fine determined by Carolyn Cyriaque or Dannielle Dungey. All Scholars must travel to on-sites by private bus charters arranged by Golden Apple. must use the meal plan offered by DePaul through its Student Union food service. Food can be expensive to purchase in the DePaul area. We purchased this meal plan for you.

We are excited for the opportunity to continue the journey to teach for our outstanding Scholars of the 2012 contingent, and look to their leadership in helping the 2013 Scholars realize what a unique and valuable experience awaits them. The core of this program is the actualizing of potential, an act that requires your attention and concern. Scholars control the quality of Summer Institute, and your positive interaction with the students, instructors, and fellow Scholars you will meet these next five weeks will determine the true value of these experiences along your journey to your classroom.

Rationale and consequences Governing the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois who will be attending the Summer Institute experience at DePaul

All Scholars must comply with the rules of behavior DePaul University has established for its students while they are guests of the university. The following are in addition to those established by DePaul and are in effect only for Golden Apple Scholars while they are participating in the Summer Institute activities at DePaul. For all infractions of policy listed below (with the exceptions of Alcohol/Drug Use and Violence to Person policies) the following consequence for initial or subsequent misbehavior will result: First Offense: Second Offense: Director; $300 Third Offense: Written warning to Scholar; $200 fine. Phone call to parents by Director; Conference with fine; probation. Phone call to parents by Director; forfeiture of remaining stipend; meeting with Director; removal from program.

An abridgment of the alcohol/drug policy as stipulated below results in a combining of the first and second offense consequences (resulting in a third offense consequence if abridgment of the alcohol policy is the second offense). Abridgment of the Violence to Person policy as stipulated below results in an automatic expulsion from the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois program. 1. Room assignments Scholars assigned to rooms cannot change those assignments, nor move furniture out or into those rooms, nor damage the property of the university or other Scholars. Rationale: The Golden Apple Foundation must stipulate where Scholars are housed for liability reasons. The policy also prevents unnecessary infringement of rights of other Scholars. The Golden Apple Foundation is also responsible for university property. Consequence: As outlined in three-step procedure above, including restitution liability. 2. Room contract Each grouping of Scholars assigned to a room must agree by consensus to an individual room code of conduct concerning such issues as smoking, quiet hours, weekend visitors and general maintenance. A copy of such a contract must be filed with the liaisons. Rationale: The mutual agreed tenets of such a contract preclude many issues that could develop as the SI continues without such an agreement. Consequence: First a warning, then as outlined in the three-step procedure above for all tenants of the room. 3. Quiet hours All Scholars will observe quiet hours daily between 10pm-7am.

Rationale: The responsibility to Chicago school children you bear as part of this SI experience requires receiving and allowing other Scholars to receive adequate rest and reflection time. Consequence: As outlined in three-step procedure above. 4. Curfew All Scholars must be in the dormitory by midnight on days when we will have school or a Golden Apple activity/session the next morning. Rationale: Part of the experience we provide is discovering the necessary discipline a quality teacher must follow in order to provide best efforts for schoolchildren. Consequence: As outlined in three-step procedure above. 5. Punctuality All Scholars must arrive on time for all classes, bus departures, and events of the Summer Institute. Rationale: Common courtesy as well as professional behavior dictates that Scholars acquire proper time management. Consequence: The Director will offer a written warning and may create other consequences before invoking the consequences as outlined in threestep procedure above. 6. Visitors There will no visitors allowed in the dorm. Rationale: The Golden Apple Foundation has no leverage to control the behavior of non-Scholars. The possibility of conflict arising from interaction with those outside the program is a major liability worry. This policy will be in effect during all Golden Apple Summer Institutes (DePaul, Elmhurst, Dominican, and CORE.) Consequence: As outlined in three-step procedure above. 7. Alcohol & Narcotics Scholars engaged in Summer Institute cannot indulge in alcohol or narcotic use of a non-medicinal nature. No alcohol or narcotic substances, containers, or containers used to store such substances are allowed in the dormitory. Scholars are not allowed in bars. Rationale: Such use by minors is illegal in Illinois. Scholars under the influence pose major safety risk to self and others and pose major liability risk to the Golden Apple Foundation. Such behavior demeans the mission of the program. Consequence: If a first offense, a combination of step one and two as outlined above. As a subsequent offense, as outlined in step three. 8. Violence to person Scholars shall not engage in acts of violence or sexual assault, intimidation, or harassment with any person of any age or relation. Rationale: Such activity is illegal in Illinois, and a conviction of such offenses precludes anyone from pursuing a teaching career. Consequence: Automatic expulsion from the program.

Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois - Sexual Harassment Policy

Schools and the workplace are very sensitive to issues involving sexual harassment, and all such entities have developed policies and protocol. The university you attend and your school site will detail their policies to you. Most use the legally established definitions of harassment as coined by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The Golden Apple Foundation has its policy, which has been adapted for the information and protection of its Scholars. This sheet will detail the definition of harassment and the protocol Scholars should follow when responding to an incident of harassment that takes place during Summer Institute or at any time when Scholars gather on behalf of the Golden Apple Foundation or the Scholars program. Scholars should expect to enjoy Summer Institute and any activity sponsored by the Golden Apple Foundation or the Scholars program without fear of being sexually harassed or exploited by anyone. The policy of the Scholars program clearly states, Scholars shall not engage in acts of violence or sexual assault, intimidation or harassment with anyone. The consequence for violating this policy is automatic expulsion from the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois program. Sexual harassment is most commonly defined as unwelcome sexual advances. Sexual harassment is also defined as verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when . . . such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individuals work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment. The Golden Apple Foundation wishes to provide an environment free from sexual harassment and will excuse any Scholar who harasses anyone from further participation the program. If the person found sexually harassing any Scholar is an employee or contractor of the Golden Apple Foundation, that employee or contractor can be disciplined up to and including termination from the employ of the Golden Apple Foundation. It is very important to note that you need not actually commit a sexual advance to still be accused of harassment. Harassment can occur by what you say. Harassment can occur by threatening to commit a sexual action, even if that action is not carried out. The term intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment includes physical and/or verbal behavior. It defines incidents that have the effect of humiliation, embarrassment or discomfort. It does not matter if the victim is fully conscious, partially conscious, asleep or under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. Unwelcome sexual advances under any circumstance constitute harassment. If a Scholar believes sexual harassment has occurred, these steps should be followed: 1. Tell the person doing what you construe to be sexual harassment to stop. Keep records of the incident: time, place, action, words, and witnesses. 2. Report the incident to any adult representative of the Golden Apple Foundation: whether a liaison, instructor, assistant director or the director. If the director is alleged to have harassed anyone, the President/CEO of the Golden Apple Foundation should be contacted. 3. The representative informed will inform the director (or, as described in the above circumstance, the President/CEO), who will conduct an investigation, including requesting a written report from the complainant. 4. The alleged harasser will be contacted by the director and ordered confined to the dorm room assigned until notice from the director. 5. The director will consult with legal counsel, campus security, and the CEO/President of the Golden Apple Foundation before rendering a decision.

The director will after receiving advice and counsel determine whether the conduct of the accused is intimidating, hostile or offensive. The director will then contact the alleged victim and alleged harasser and inform them and their parents of the decision. It is very important to understand that because of the serious nature of an allegation of sexual harassment, any false or malicious complaint will result in disciplinary action against the person making the complaint, up to and including removal from further participation in the program. No such false reports will be tolerated. It is also very important to note that a Scholar alleging sexual harassment will be protected from retaliation for submitting in good faith a complaint to which the complainant has been subjected or of which he or she has knowledge.
