SANGGUNIAN STAND REGARDING THE GUN VIOLENCE IN ZAMBOANGA The Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral ng mga Paaralang Loyola ng Ateneo de Manila is against the numerous, senseless and unresolved shootings in Zamboanga City. The Sanggunian calls for the swift delivery of justice for the more than 250 victims of shooting crimes. The Sanggunian urges the Zamboanga City local government to give more attention to both hastening the delivery of justice for the victims and regulating gun violence in order to prevent even more deaths. From January of 2012 to January of 2013, over 180 shooting-related incidents have been reported in the city. This implies that almost every other day, a gunshot-related crime occurs in Zamboanga City. From January to late June of 2013, the numbers have risen to more than 250 victims, an increase of around 72% in only a span of roughly 180 days. This implies that the volume of gunshot crimes are increasing at an also increasing rate thus, the local government of Zamboanga should have a sense of urgency in conducting efforts to address this problem before the numbers rise even further. Justin Raphael Wee, a student of Ateneo de Zamboanga University was shot in the head last June 22, 2013. Recent reports narrate incidents where people are abducted right from their own residences, and others where victims are shot in broad daylight. The Sanggunian asserts that the right to feel secure in ones community be given to the citizens of Zamboanga City. The Sanggunian acknowledges the difficulty in feeling such security and safety given the rampancy and frequency of crimes in the aforementioned community. In keeping with the Sanggunians value in making the student body both socially aware and socially involved, and recognizing that the Ateneo de Manila upholds respect and value for the sacredness of human life, we call for the Ateneo de Manila Loyola Schools student body: 1.) to stand with the Sanggunian in upholding the value of human life; 2.) to stand with us in supporting our Filipino brothers in Zamboanga in their fight for justice; 3.) to make themselves more aware regarding and monitor the violence in Zamboanga; 4.) to spread their knowledge and awareness regarding the issue to other people; and 5.) to support and attend the Sanggunians efforts in promo ting awareness regarding the issue.
