INDIA VOTES AGAINST SRI LANKA: India voted in favour of UNHRC resolution against Sri Lanka for alleged violation of human rights during their three-decade-long Tamil separatist conflict that ended in May 2009 with the killing of rebel Tamil Tiger Chief Velupillai Prabhakaran. The United States-sponsored resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva was passed with the support of 25 member countries. HIGH CHILD MORTALITY IN INDIA: Globally, an estimated 2,000 children under the age of five die every day from diarrhoeal diseases and of these some 1,800 deaths are linked to water, sanitation and hygiene, according to a report by The United Nations Childrens Fund (UNIFEC). HELICOPTER DEAL SCRAPPED: India has taken steps to cancel a $ 748 million contract for 12 AW 101 helicopters meant for VVIP use, from the Italian firm Agusta Westland Amid allegations that the deal was won through bribes of up to $ 66 million. Agusta Westland is a unit of Italian aerospace group Finmeccanica. A 30 member joint Parliamentary Committee has been formed to probe the controversial chopper deal. INDIA TO PUSH FOR TAPI PROJECT: India the Turkmenistan agree to take necessary steps for early realisation of the ambitious TAPI gas pipeline project and increase bilateral trade. The TAPI pipeline which would originate from Turkmenistan, and pass through Afghanistan and Pakistan before entering India, will have a capacity to carry 90 million standard cubic metres a day (mscmd) gas for a 30 year period. NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY BILL APPROVED: The Union Cabinet has cleared the National Food Security Bill that gives legal entitlement to 67 % population (including 75% rural and 50% urban) for subsidised foodgrains under the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS).A beneficiary will be entitled to 5 kg of rice, wheat or coarse cereals at Rs. 3,2 and 1 a kg, respectively, per month. The beneficiaries will be identified by the States based on parameters prescribed by the Union Government. VOLUNTARY SCHEME FOR SERVICE TAX: Aiming ensure a large number of assesses of assesses to return to the tax fold, the government has proposed a onetime scheme called Voluntary Compliance Encouragement Scheme for service tax defaulters. A defaulter may avail of the scheme on the condit ion that he files a truthful declaration of service tax dues since October 1,2007 and makes the payment in one or two installements before the prescribed dates. SUBSIDY EXPENDITURE TO BE CUT DOWN: The government has decided that it will reduce outgo on subsides from 2.6 % of GDP in( 2011-17) to contain the expenditure within a pre-determined level of affordability. WAGES FOR MNREGA WORKERS HIKED: Wages for MNREGA workers have been revised wef April 1. States like Haryana may get highest wage at Rs 214 per day followed by Rs. 210 and Rs. 209 in Andaman Nicobar and Chandigarh respectively. Workers in states like Bihar, Sikkim, Tripura, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh will get the minimum of Rs.135 IMPRISONMENT FOR TAX EVASION: Failure to pay excise duty and service tax could lead to arrest of defaulters, as per the provisions proposed in the finance Bill 2013. Offences relating to excise and customs duty evasion of over Rs. 50 lakh would be made cognisable and non-bail able .Similarly in case of service tax, the failure to deposit the tax amount exceeding Rs 50 lakh with the government would result in imprisonment upto seven year. th GOVT FOR EXPANSION OF DISHA: The government has set target of bringing 2,900 apparel units in the 12 plan under DISHAa programme aimed at encouraging better social practices to meet global standards on issues like child labour. DISHADriving Industry Towards Sustainable Human Capital Advancement is aimed at encouraging members to follow better social practices, in the backdrop of pressure from developed countries, especially the EU and the US, to meet global standards on labour issues. ONE PERSON COMPANY: The Companies Bill 2012, when enacted into a law, would provide for floating a One Person Company-OPC, a concept prevalent in Europe, the US, Singapore and china. Currently, at least two persons are required to float a private company in India. The Bill has been passed by the Lok Sabha and will now be placed in the Rajya Sabha. THREE NEW HIGH COURTS: The centre has constituted three new High Courts in the northeast- Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura- taking the total number of High Courts in the country from 21 to 24. DIRECT CASH TRANSFER SCHEME IN 43 DISTRICTS: The government had announced Aadhar (Unique Identification Number) based Cash Transfer of social benefits in 51 districts with effect from January 1, 2013. Due to announcement of elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, the election commission directed the government to implement the scheme in 43 districts. PRICING OF NATURAL GAS: A committee headed by Dr. C Rangarajan, the head of the Prime Ministers Economic Advisory Council, has suggested linking the price of domestically-produced natural gas to international benchmarks such as US Henry Hub as well as the average wellhead price at which India imports g as. TH th 117 CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT BILL: The Rajya Sabha gave its nod to the 117 Constitution Amendment Bill providing reservation to Scheduled Castes and scheduled Tribes in promotions in government jobs. The bill provides for amendments to Article 16(4) of the Constitution that will allow states to reserve seats in promotion for SCs, STs. The bill is yet to be passed by Lok Sabha. WHEAT MSP FIXED AT RS.1350: The government has announced Rs 65 per quintal hike in the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat to Rs 1,350 per quintal and allowed additional exports of 2.5 million tonnes of wheat from its godowns to clear surplus stock and ease storage crunch. GOVT MERGES TWO BIMA SCHEMES: The government has merged Janashree Bima Yojana (JBY) and Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana (AABY) into one scheme-Aam Aadmi Janashree Bima Yojana , since both the schemes provide life cover and have similar benefits, premium and target group and are being implemented through Life Insurance Corporation of India. COMPNIES BILL 2011 PASSED: The Lok Sabha passed the Companies Bill 2011 to make CSR spend mandatory for most profit making companies. Companies will have to necessarily spend two per cent of their average net profits in previous three preceding financial years towards corporate social responsibility (CSR). The CSR spend would be mandatory for companies that have a net worth of Rs 500 crore or more, or turnover of Rs 1,000 crore or more or a net profit of Rs 5 crore or more in a financial year. A private company can now have a maximum of 200 members, up from 50 in the Companies Act, 1956. Approval has been given for creation of one person company (OPC). 10 NMIZs APPROVED: To boost manufacturing activity in the country, the government has notified 10 mega industrial zones-NMIZs (National Manufacturing Investment Zones), in different state. Each NMIZ will be a mega integrated township with world class infrastructure; the biggest one spread over 900 sq kms in Dholera (Gujarat). RAJIV AWAS YOJANA TO COVER ALL CITIES: Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Ministry has advised that the second phase of the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) will cover all cities in the country irrespective of population. NATIONWIDE MOBILE NUMBER PORTABILITY: Mobile number portability is expected to be rolled out nationwide by February, 2013. This will allow users to retain their numbers even if they move from one State to another. Currently, a user is allowed to switch to a different operator with his/her circle, while retaining his/her phone number. A committee has been formed under chairmanship of Abhijit Sen, Member, Planning Commission for reviewing the fixing of poverty line to decide the eligibility under various government welfare schemes. INDIA TO GROW @ 5.9% - IMF: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has peg ged Indias economic growth rate in 2013 at 5.9 % and projected a higher growth of 6.4% next year in line with the gradual strengthening of global expansion GDP GROWTH SLIPS TO 4.5%: Economy grew by 4.5% in the October-December period of the current financial year as against 6 % last year, pulled down by poor performance of farm, manufacturing and mining sectors. FISCAL DEFICIT CUT DOWN TO 4.8%: Expressing Indias commitment to fiscal prudence, Government is committed to contain deficit at 5.3% of GDP in the current year, and bring it down to 4.8% (Rs 5.42 trillion) in 201314. 3

DISINVESTMENT TARGET HIKED TO RS 54,000 CR: The government has hiked its disinvestment target to Rs. 54,000 crore for the fiscal ending March 31,2014- a sharp rise from Rs. 30,000 crore that was the target for the year 2012-13. 2012-13 GROWTH RATE LOWERED TO 5%: According to the Advanced Estimates released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Indias economic growth rate this fiscal is esti mated to be sharply lower at 5 %, lowest in a decade, on account of poor performance of manufacturing, agriculture and services sector. The growth rate was 6.2 % in 2011-12. PER CAPITA INCOME CROSSES 61,000 MARK: According to Advance Estimate of National Income, 2012-13 released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Indias per capita income, a gauge for measuring living standard, is estimated to have gone up 11.7 % to Rs. 5,729 per month in 2012-13 at current prices, compared with Rs. 5,130 in the previous fiscal. TH th INDIA 11 IN ECONOMIC FREEDOM: India has been ranked as the 11 freest country in the world out of 177 in the 2013 index of economic freedom complied by Heritage Foundation. FX RESERVES SINK TO $295.67 BN: Total foreign exchange reserves declined by $ 580.3 million to $ 295.67 billion during the week ended January 18 on the back of lower foreign currency assets (FCAs), according to the Reserve Bank of India. TH 12 FYP GROWTH RATE FIXED AT 8%: Taking heed of the weak global economic signals, the National th Development Council (NDC) has approved the 12 Plan Document after scaling down the average annual growth target to 8 % for the five year period, as suggested by the Planning Commission. GROWTH RATE LOWERED TO 5.7%: According to the mid-year economic analysis tabled in Parliament, the Government has lowered the growth projection for 2012-13 to 5.7 -5.9 % as against 7.6 %. GDP RECORDS 5.3% GROWTH IN JUL-SEP: Provisional GDP data released on Nov 30 shows that countrys economy grew 5.3% in the July-September period, compared to same period last year. The economic growth in the first six month of this fiscal (April-September) is 5.4%, lower than 7.3% growth clocked in the year-ago period. DUTY HIKED ON GOLD IMPORTS: The Government has increased the import duty on gold and platinum to 6% from 4 % at present. SMALL SAVINGS INTEREST RATES SLASHED: The Interest rates on Small Savings Schemes and Public st Provident fund, PPF, will come down by 0.10 % from the 1 April, 2013. However, the rates on savings deposit schemes and on fixed deposit of up to one year have been kept unchanged at 4% and 8.2%. CURRENCY SWAP SIGNED WITH BHUTAN: India and Bhutan have signed a currency swap agreement for up to $ 100 million to further economic co-operation between the two countries. JAPAN TO AID INFRASTRUCTURE IN INDIA: India and Japan have agreed to promote their bilateral strategic and global partnership especially in economic and security areas, wherein Japan would provide a $ 2.32 billion aid for infrastructure building in India. AGRICULTURE DOWN TO 13.7% OF GDP: According to an official statement in the parliament, the share of agriculture and allied sectors in Indias GDP is likely to decline to 13.7% in 2012 -13 from 14.1 % in 2011-12, on account of higher growth in the non-farm sectors. MAHARATNA STATUS FOR BHEL AND GAIL: The government has granted Maharatna status to BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electrical Ltd.) and GAIL (Gas Authority of India Ltd. ) taking the number of Maharatna firms to 7 (the existing Maharatna firms are Coal India, ONGC, IOC, NTPC & SAIL) A Maharatna firm can take investment decision of up to Rs. 5,000 crore without going to the government. A company qualifying for the Maharatna status should have, in last three years, an average annual turnover of more than Rs. 25,000 crore , net worth of over Rs. 15,000 crore and net profit of more than Rs. 5,000 crore. IRDA RAISES INVESTMENT LIMITS: The Insurance Regulatory and development Authority (IRDA) has advised that the insurance companies have now been permitted to hold up to 15% stake in the capital of any company, up from 10 % at present. EPFO INTEREST RAISED TO 8.5%: The six crore subscribers of the central Employees Provident Fund Organisation(EPFO) will set an increased rate of interest @ 8.50 % for 2012-13, an increase of 0.25 % from the current 8.25%.s TH INDIA RANKS 4 IN STEEL PRODUCTION: Indias rank in the world order of steel production remained unchanged at fourth slot with an output of 76.7 million tonnes, despite logging the highest growth of 4.2% among major producing nations in 2012. INDIA SIGNS FTA WITH ASEAN: For the first time, India hosted the India- ASEAN summit at New Delhi. Targeting a two-way trade of USD 100 billion by 2015, India and ASEAN entered in to a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to liberalise trade in services and investments at the summit. INDIA TO BURN MORE COAL: India is likely to be the second largest consumer of coal, surpassing the United States, in the next five years, says a report by International Energy Agency (IFA), while China to remain at top. SEBI INCREASES BMC FOR BROKERS: The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has increased the basic minimum capital (BMC) deposit for stock broker and trading members to up to Rs. 50 lakh from the earlier maximum of Rs. 10 lakh. It would be implemented by the stock exchanges by March 31, 2013. BSE TOPS IN WORLD IN LISTINGS: Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has emerged as the worlds top exchange in terms of the number of listed companies, outpacing major global peers such as NYSE, Nasdaq and London Stock Exchange by almost 100 %. 4

SHOME COMMITTEE SUBMITS REPORT ON GAAR: The Parthsarathi Shome committee, originally constituted to frame guidelines for General Anti Avoidance Rules (GAAR), has submitted its report to Finance Minister. GOVT BOOSTS CAPITAL OF SBI: State Bank of India received Rs.3,004 crore from the government by preferential allotment of 1.29 crore equity shares at the issue price of Rs. 2,312.78 per share, as part of the recapitalisation plan of the state-run banks. REPO RATE CUT BY 0.25 TO 7.50 PER CENT: The RBI has cut down the repo rate a token 25 basis points to th 7.50 % from 19 March, with the warning that there is little headroom for more action as the inflationary pressures remained high. BANKS IN EXPANSION MODE: Public sector banks have opened a total of 11,887 branches in various regions, including rural and metropolitan areas, and recruited over 1.72 lakh persons in the last three financial years. BANKS DEPOSITS/LOAN SLOW DOWN: Up to Feb 22, banks advances grew around 9.2 % , compared with 11.8% a year earlier, while deposit growth was also around 7.6% compared with 11.7 percent in the same period a year ago. RBI BANS INTERNATIONAL USAGE OF CARDS: In a move to curtail rising credit card frauds, the Reserve Bank of India has asked banks to bar international usage of debit and credit cards unless customers specifically ask for this feature. GUIDELINES FOR NEW BANK LICENSES: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released final guidelines for issuing new bank licenses to allow entitles of groups in the private sector, entities in public sector and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) to set up a bank through a wholly-owned Non-Operative Financial Holding Company (NOFHC).RBI has not excluded companies or entitles from any specific industry from applying for a new bank licence. High lights of the guidelines are as under: Applications for licences can be submitted upto July 1. Companies in both private and public sector, including corporate houses and non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) are eligible to apply. Applicants should have a past record of sound credentials, integrity and should be financially sound and have a successful track record of running their business for at least 10 years. New bank has to be set up through a wholly-owned non-operative Financial Holding Company (NOFHC). NOFHC should hold a minimum of 40% of the paid-up voting equity capital of the bank which would be locked for five years and which would be brought down to 15% within 12 years. OVER 2481 CR LYING IN UNCLAIMED A/Cs: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has informed that a total amount of Rs.2, 481.40 crore in 1, 12, 49,844 accounts is lying as unclaimed deposits with commercial banks. RBI ALLOWS NRO A/Cs FOR BANGLADESHIS: The Reserve Bank has advised that banks are now permitted to open non-resident ordinary rupee (NRO) account of Bangladeshi nationals without its prior approval. RBI TO RELEASE PLASTIC NOTES: The Reserve Bank of India will soon release a billion pieces of plastic notes of ten rupee denomination on a trial basis. Kochi, Mysore, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar and Shimla have initially been selected for the trial on the basis of their varied geographical locations and climatic conditions. ANAND SINHAS TERM EXTENDED: The government has extended term of RBI Deputy Governor Anand Sinha, who played key role in formulation of guidelines for new bank licences, by about 11 months, upto Jan 18, 2014. RBI CUTS POLICY RATES BY 25 BPS: Home and Auto loans are set to become cheaper as Reserve Bank cut the Repo Rate (short-term lending rate) and CRR by 25 basis points each in its quarterly monetary policy review on January 29. GOVT TO PUMP Rs. 12,517 CR IN BANKS: The Union Cabinet has approved infusion of Rs 12,517 crore in about 10 public sector banks (PSBs) during the current fiscal to enhance their lending capabilities and also help them in meeting the stricter and enhanced capital adequacy norms under Basel-III applicable from April 1, 2013. 5

BANK DEPOSIT CROSS RS. 65 TRILLION: Aggregate deposits raised by the commercial banks in the country amounted to 65.38 lakh crore as on January 11, up Rs. 61,000 crore from previous fortnight. BULK DEPOSITS REDEFINED: The Reserve Bank has revised the definition of wholesale (bulk) deposits for payment of differential interest rates from Rs 15 lakh to Rs. 1 crore and above. For deposits below Rs. 1 crore, the same rate will apply for deposits of the same maturity. The interest paid should be as per the card rates, not subject to negotiation with the depositor. RBI RAISES LIMITS FOR FII INVESTMENT: The Reserve Bank has hiked FII investment limits in government securities and corporate bonds by $ 5 billion each, taking the total cap in domestic debt to $ 75 billion, with a view to bridging the current account deficit. SBI LAUNCHES MOBILE WALLET SERVICE: State Bank of India (SBI) has launched State Bank MobiCash Easy, a mobile wallet which offers facilities such as fund transfer, bill payment, balance inquiry, mini statement, mobile top-ups and DTH recharge to name a few. BANKING LAWS BILL, 2011 PASSED: The Lok Sabha passed the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2011, to pave the way for foreign investments in the sector and establishment of new private banks. The new banks will have to bring in a capital of Rs. 500 crore. The Bill aims to raise the voting rights of investors in private sector banks to 26% , from 10% at present. It will allow RBI to supersede boards of private investors in PSBs to 10%, from current 1 %.The bill also paves the way for merger of banks. DEBIT CARD WITH PHOTOGRAPHS: To prevent the misuse of stolen cards, the RBI has asked banks to consider issuing debit cards with photographs of the cardholders on them. The RBI further said that each bank shall provide means whereby his customers may at any time of the day or night notify the loss, theft or copying of their payment devices GOVT TO PUMP 3000 CRORE IN SBI: The government has approved fund infusion of Rs 3,004 crore in SBI during the current fiscal to boost the banks capital base. The Finance Ministry has recently approved allocation of Rs. 15,000 crore for various public sector banks including SBI by March, 2013. NOMINATION AVAILABLE IN JOINT ACCOUNTS: RBI has clarified that nomination facility is available for joint deposit accounts too and advised banks to ensure that their branches offer nomination facility to all deposit accounts including joint accounts holders. Further, attestation by two witnesses is required only in case of the thumb impression of account holder on nomination forms and not when account holder puts his signatures on the nomination form. CTS DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 31 JULY: RBI has asked banks to accept and clear all residual non-CTS-2010 st cheques till 31 July this Year. From August 1, all banks will have to conform to the new high security CTS-2010 standards. SIGNATURE MISMATCH IS A OFFENCE: The Supreme Court has ruled that a person may face criminal proceedings if a cheque issued by him gets dishonoured on the ground that his signature does not match the specimen signature available with the bank. The Court observed that Just as dishonour of a cheque on the ground that the account has been closed is a dishonour falling in the first contingency referred to in Section 138 of Negotiable Instrument Act, so also dishonour on the ground that the signatures do not match would constitute a dishonour within cheque for insufficiency of funds in the account is a criminal offence under section 138 of the Negotiable Instrument. RUSSIA AND SBO PLAN $ 2 BN INVESTMENT: Russia sovereign wealth fund RDIF and State Bank of India plan to set up a $ 2 billion investment consortium with 50:50 sharing, aimed at promoting mutual investments between the two countries. The $ 10 billion-Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) is Russias sovereign wealth fund. HIGHER BAD LOAN NORMS FOR NBFCs: Non-banking finance companies will have to follow the asset classification and provisioning norms applicable to banks from April 1, 2015, according to the Reserve Bank of India. At present, the period for classifying loans as bad in the case of NBFCs is higher at 180/360 days compared with 90 days for banks. The new norms will be implemented in phases: a 120 day norm shall be applied from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015 and a 90 day norm thereafter. BANKS NEED RS. 5 TRILLION AS CAPITAL: The government estimates that Indian banks will require capital to the tune of Rs 5 trillion by March, 2018 to satisfy the Basel III norms. Out of this, Rs. 3.25 trillion will be non-equity capital and remaining will be equity capital. The estimates also suggests that governments contribution to the equity capital of the order of Rs 900 billion (Rs. 90,000 crore) at the existing level of shareholding of the government in the PSBS. SINGLE PROOF FOR BANK A/C OPENING: RBI has advised that Banks can accept documents such as Passport, Drivers Licence, Aadhar letter, and NREGA job card as proof of identity as well as address for opening of bank accounts. However, this is subject to the condition that the address on the document submitted should be the same as that declared by him/her in the account opening form. The RBI has also clarified that introduction is not required to open a bank account provided KYC norms are complied with. SARAL MONEY LAUNCHED BY UIDAI: Saral Money, an innovative payment product in the form of debit card has been launched in Delhi by UIDAI in collaboration with five banks Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI, Indian Overseas Bank and the State Bank of India and Visa Card. Under the scheme, the card holder can receive the money directly from various government agencies and the same can be withdrawn using the ATM network, without even having a proper bank account.

RBI DEFERES BASEL III NORMS: The Reserve Bank has deferred the implantation of Basel III norms to April 1, 2013. The earlier deadline was January 1, 2013. The norms have to be implemented in a phased manner and are to be completed by March 31, 2018. RBI SAYS NO TO GOLD LOANS: The Reserve Bank has directed banks not to give loans for purchase of gold in any form, including primary gold, bullion and jewellery, to dissuade people from indulging in speculative activity. Banks can provide finance for genuine working capital requirements of jewellers. SBI LEADS IN FOREIGN OFFICES: State Bank of India has taken the leadership position in overseas presence with 52 offices as on March 2012, ahead of Bank of Barodas 47. Indian banks col lectively have 165 offices overseas. The UK is the most preferred destination for Indian banks with 30 offices, followed by Hong Kong (18) and Singapore (17).
