Act III
Character: A person (though not necessarily a human being) who takes part in the action of a literary work is
known as a character. Characters can be classified in different ways. A character who plays an important role is
called a major character. A character who does not is called a minor character. A character who plays a central
role in a story is called a protagonist. A character who opposes the protagonist is called the antagonist. A round
character has many aspects to his personality. A flat character is defined by only a few qualities. A character who
changes is called dynamic; a character who does not change is called static.
1. Examine the definition of character from your textbook (reprinted above). The characters in A Dolls
House are Torvald Helmer, Nora, Dr. Rank, Mrs. Linde, Nils Krogstad, the Helmer children, Anne-Marie,
Helene, and a delivery boy. Note that you are determining two things for each: Is the character flat or
round? Is the character static or dynamic? Place each character in the appropriate cell in the table below.
Beneath the chart, defend an example of each type of character.

Thematic connection and extension: Music/Lyric Poetry

Themes in literature and art are echoed and repeated in other works of literature and art. You will choose three
lyric poems and/or songs that echo or repeat the essence of two characters in A Dolls House. Look back at the
character chart on the front of this handout. Choose one character that can be described as static and/or flat, and
match a lyric poem or song to that character. Choose another character that can be described as round and/or
dynamic and choose two songs that reveal the roundness or the change that the character demonstrates in the
play. Use a chart like this one to plan your examples. Do this on your own paper.

After you have planned your connections, write a short (one-page-ish) essay introducing and explaining each
character and defending the connection you made between the characters essences and the songs/poems.
Make sure to offer context for the play and the connected texts. Offer author/artist names and full titles in your
essay. Quote appropriate lines from both the play and the songs/poems for support. Include a Works Cited page
for the play and each song/poem.
