l acuario de Almucar es una instalacin subterrnea de 3.000m2 que aloja una muestra de fauna mediterrnea en dos niveles ubicada bajo la Plaza de Kuwait, al lado del mercado y cerca del ayuntamiento de la ciudad andaluza de Almucar (Espaa). El acuario emerge a la superficie por su edificio de control, escalera y ascensor, todo ello situado

he Almucar Aquarium is a 3000 m2 underground installation that shows Mediterranean fauna on two levels below the Kuwait Square next to the market and near the City Hall of the andalusian town of Almucar (Spain). The Aquarium emerges to the surface by means of its control building, staircase and lift, all arranged around an open courtyard.

en un espacio abierto, a modo de patio. Hemos diseado una cubierta textil para proteger este espacio de la radiacin solar y la lluvia. Como es la nica parte del edificio que sobresale tambin se ha concebido como un elemento para llamar la atencin del visitante. Dos estanques reflejan la blanca y elevada membrana situada delante de un fondo de blancos edificios de apartamentos. Estructura El diseo de la estructura se basa, por un lado, en los pilares existentes del acuario y por otro lado en una forma que permite la sujecin perimetral de un canto libre que vuela generosamente y que no necesita cables para su fijacin en el suelo. La solucin consiste en tres prticos con sus arcos de distinta altura y luz (22, 24 y 22m) que ofrecen una imagen semejante a unas dunas. Los arcos se asientan sobre seis pilares arboriformes arriostrados por dos vigas perpendiculares en celosa. Estos seis pilares se apoyan en el forjado superior del acuario y corre-

A textile roof was designed to protect this courtyard from direct sunshine and rain. As the only part of the building that shows above is the membrane, it has also been envisaged as an eye catcher in order to attract visitors attention. Two water ponds reflect the white and lofty membrane set in front of the backdrop of white apartment buildings.

Structure The design of the structure is based, on the one hand, on the existing support structure of the aquarium, and on the other, on a form that allows tying up a free flowing border without the use of any cables fixed to the ground. The solution consists of three arches with different heights and spans (22, 24 and 22 m) that achieve a dune-like image. The arches sit on top of six tree-like structures held in place by two

sponden en planta con la posicin de las columnas de hormign armado que se hallan justo debajo. La estructura proporciona diez vrtices perimetrales que actan como puntos de fijacin para los cables de borde del tejido. Los arcos consisten simplemente en un par de perfiles tubulares dado que la luz se ha reducido drsticamente gracias a la ramificacin de los mstiles en su parte superior. Los prticos se han separado nueve y diez metros entre ellos a causa de la posicin irregular de las columnas de hormign situadas debajo. Por tanto tan slo encontramos un plano simtrico en direccin longitudinal. En la misma direccin las dos vigas en celosa arriostran estos prticos, recogen la pre-tensin del tejido y vuelan de forma generosa cinco metros por detrs de la entrada del edificio y seis metros por encima de la plaza. Tejido El tejido se ha fabricado en una sola pieza para evitar uniones en obra. Se fija a diez puntos perimetrales y simplemente se apoya en los arcos sin necesidad de ningn dispositivo de anclaje. Todos los cables pasan por debajo del tejido para evitar as cualquier perforacin. Existen

perpendicular trussed beams. The six masts beneath the treelike structure are anchored to the top slab of the aquarium and correspond in position to the reinforced concrete columns underneath. The structure provides 10 peripheral anchor points for the edge cables and the membrane. The arches consist only of a pair of circular hollow sections, as the spans are reduced drastically by means of branching the masts towards the top. The porticos are set 9 and 10 m apart from each other because of the irregular position of the concrete columns underneath. Therefore we find only one symmetrical plane in the longitudinal direction. In the same direction two trussed beams between these porticos provide stability and take the pre-stress out of the fabric. They project generously 5 meters behind the entrance building and 6 metres over the open square. Membrane The membrane was manufactured in only one piece to avoid joining on site. It is fixed to 10 peripheral points and simply leans on the arches without any device to fix it on them. All the cables pass underneath the fabric in order to avoid any perforation. Nombre del proyecto | Project name Almucar Textil dos tipos de detalles para los vrtices segn si la lona se sujeta a los arcos o a las vigas de celosa. En el extremo de los arcos una placa curvada semicircular sujeta los cables de borde y las placas esquineras. Al final de las vigas se ha colocado una placa soldada perpendicularmente a la direccin de la placa de esquina y se han practicado unos orificios extra para facilitar la instalacin y el pre-tensado. Redundancia Los cables de uniones entre los arcos y aquellos que atirantan la estructura se destensaron despus de la pre-tensin del tejido. Esto significa que se sustituyeron funcionalmente. En cualquier caso es aconsejable mantenerlos en su sitio para prevenir una distorsin general o un colapso provocado por fallos parciales.

to whether they are subjected to the arches or to the beams. At the end of the arches, a circular bended plate allows for different directions of edge cables and corner plates. At the end of the beams, a plate is welded perpendicularly to the direction of the corner plate and extra holes are provided for ease of installation and pre-stress.

Redundancy Ties of the arches and cables bracing the whole structure were relaxed after pre-tension of the membrane. This means that they were replaced functionally. Nevertheless, it is advisable to maintain them in place preventing a general distortion or collapse from local failures.
