The first race began in 1973 in Iroquois Park where 8 balloons took off including a cattle stampede and a balloon landing in a power line. There are two types of balloons in the race, a Hare balloon and a Hound balloon. The Hare balloon lays a fabric X in a field and the Hound balloon has to drop a small bag of Kentucky Bluegrass seed as close as they can to the X without landing their balloon. Nearly 60,000 people attend the Great Balloon Race. The Kentucky Derby Chow Wagon is a place downtown on the Waterfront where there is non-stop music and entertainment along with food. It is free if you have your Pegasus Pin. This all started when Philip Morris brought his mobile kitchen called the Marlboro Chuckwagon to the Kentucky Center on Main Street for breakfast. Now the economic impact is $22,462,902 Its always the thursday before Derby and they travel west on Broadway from Campbell Street to Ninth Street. The Parade starts at 5pm and there is a crowd of about 200,000 people and 2500 participants. Thunder Over Louisville started on April 17, 1990 at Cardinal Stadium with 35,000 people attending and 4,000 shells to set off. Thunder Over Louisville: Economic Impact

by, Paoli Ortiz
Started with 300 shells at a local stadium, Thunder over Louisville is now the largest annual fireworks display in North America since 1990. With merchants selling everything from shirts, hats, funnel cakes, fresh lemonade to fried candy bars, full parking lots and hotels fully booked; the excitement and anticipation of the booming business in Louisville is in the air. Thunder over Louisville economic impact is a stunning $31 million for one day. Which is a huge return on a roughly a $ 1 million investment. The meaning to individual people and local companies is clearly great. Local hotels from the Galt House, Ramada hotel, Hilton Louisville hotel and local pizzerias have a great economic impact during the Derby Festival Opening Ceremonies, but mainly on Thunder over Louisville. Louisville Galt House Sales Manager, Cyndi Marion said that Derby season is their busiest season. People book their rooms months before they actually come, sales manager said. By Derby season almost everything is booked. However not only do local businesses benefit from Thunder, this event also creates part time employment for more than 100 people who are hired during the weekend to assist with the show set-up, tear-down and clean up. For this event, the rental of 750 portable restrooms, 150 radios, 100 golf carts, three miles of portable fence, security devices, portable generators, T-shirts and security credentials to identify nearly 700 volunteers and workers, is how the sponsors spend their nearly $400,000 with local companies and workers. Other than local businesses, charitable and non-profit organizations are also benefited. The Kentucky Center for the Arts and Actors Theatre raise about $25,000. The Belle of Louisville generates more than $35,000 towards its operating budget and The Louisville Ballet, The Louisville Science Center and the Louisville Slugger Museum are other fundraising parties. All the hard work towards one common goal marks the launch of festivities culminating in the May 5 running of the Kentucky Derby. The event drew more than 400,000 spectators, according to Kentucky Derby Festival estimates. The 7- hour display of aircraft and fireworks make everything worth it. Seventeen year-old, Marcus Cosby from Bardstown, Ky. was awed by the dozens of fast-flying military jets and fireworks that took place in Thunder. Even though it was colder than I expected, I still enjoyed the show, Marcus said. Ive come to three thunders so far, I think that they make it even better each year. But even when the last firework has been shot and the music comes to an end, the economic impact is still there. It is in the peoples pockets that help serve food, clean up, rent their hotel suites who helped make Thunder an explosive event.
