Terms and Definitions


Children Individuals under the age of 18.
Food insecurity Lack of access at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life and limited or uncertain availability
of nutritionally adequate foods.
Illiteracy Indirect estimate of percent of residents lacking basic prose literacy skills.
Infant mortality rate Annual number of deaths of infants under age 1 per 1,000 live births.
Obese Adults with a Body Mass Index of 30 or higher.
Poverty rate The percent of persons (or families) who live below the federal poverty line as calculated by the Census Bureau.
Teen Birth rate Live births per 1,000 teen population.
Unemployment rate The percentage of the workforce that is unemployed at any given date. Persons are classified as
unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior four weeks, and are currently available for work.
