Timing
Warnings and recommendations
Unless otherwise advised by the manufacturer, the following procedures are recommended: Always fit a new timing belt after removal Check the tensioner and idler pulleys; renew if necessary Never turn the engine in the direction opposite to that of normal operation Inspect the belt(s) for cracks, fraying, wear and oil contamination Note: The engine must be cold before timing belt adjustment Note: Avoid bending, torsion or traction

General
Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal

Before disconnecting the battery cable, check the audio system security code

Removal
Disconnect the battery Remove the air filter and the air-inlet hose Remove the engine upper cover Remove the engine lower cover Remove the air-conditioner belt

Timing
Remove the alternator belt Remove the timing belt upper cover

Turn the crankshaft to TDC for cylinder 1

Remove the crankshaft pulley,

Timing
Fit the crankshaft TDC positioning tool from under the engine into the flywheel, Mot. 1054

Turn the crankshaft until the locking pin fits, Lock the injection pump gearwheel with a locking pin, Mot. 910

Lock the injection pump shaft, :

Remove the bolt

Remove the spacer Refit the bolt Compress the tensioner Lock the tensioner, Use a modified nut (U-shape), M14

Timing
Remove the timing belt lower cover

Remove the tensioner pulley, Remove the timing belt Remove the idler pulley

Installation
Fit the idler pulley, 41 Nm Fit the tensioner pulley Fit the timing belt Fit the timing belt lower cover, 8 Nm

Remove the crankshaft locking pin, Mot. 1054

Unlock the injection pump shaft, : Loosen the bolt Fit the spacer

Tighten the bolt

Timing
Remove the tensioner locking tool, M14

Rotate the engine 2 rotations by hand, Fit the crankshaft TDC positioning tool from under the engine into the flywheel, Mot. 1054 Fit the injection pump locking pin, Mot. 910 Tighten the crankshaft pulley, 30 Nm Tighten the tensioner pulley nut, 41 Nm Remove the locking pins, Mot. 910, Mot. 1054 Fit the flywheel locking tool, Mot. 1054 Tighten the crankshaft pulley, 200 Nm Refit the flywheel cover plate

Timing
Fit the timing belt upper cover

Fit the alternator belt Turn the engine 3 rotations clockwise Check the tension with a tension gauge, Mot. 1273

The tension is set when the tension gauge indicates a value of:, 292 10 Hz Tighten the alternator Fit the air-conditioner belt Check the tension with a tension gauge, Mot. 1273 The tension is set when the tension gauge indicates a value of:, 130 6 Hz Fit the engine lower cover Refit the engine cover Refit the air filter housing and hoses Reconnect the battery
