"Welcome to Foundation for Rural Development (FRD) a nonprofit, non-political, nongovernmental organization.

FRD is working for the development and uplift of the marginalized rural communities through long term development initiatives as well as humanitarian assistance. FRD is registered under voluntary Social welfare societies act 1961, and Currently working in FATA, Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and Punjab." Road to the Development Medical facilities in Gul Imam are very limited. There is only one BHU in Gul imam, which was insufficient for communitys need. And their access to a highly equipped hospital was limited because the road which linked it to other areas was severely damaged due to 2010 floods and it was very difficult and excruciating for community to use it for transportation/mobility. Access to the school was another major issue especially in rainy season. The sanitation and drainage of water was very poor and in case of rain all the water used to stay on roads which made pits on road. Due to these pits mobility was difficult and students regular attendance to school was badly affected. FRD in partnership of UNDP started the rehabilitation of Khyber Road under its project of CBI Tank, which to the greater extent solved the above mentioned problems. Now mobility across the road is easier, swift and less time consuming. It has great positive impact on livelihoods of villagers as it benefited farmers in transportation of their production easily to the main market. Students attendance in schools is now regular even in rainy seasons.it also made easy access for villagers to grasp the employment opportunities in the city. Shopkeepers can now fetch fresh vegetables on daily basis. It also paves the way for other development activities, as the village is now more accessible to government/ NGO authorities. It is to be noted that Khyber shingle road was relatively bigger scheme in terms of length, time frame and cost. This scheme was completed successfully according to revised work plan and approximately four thousand people, 800 directly and 3000 indirectly are benefiting from this scheme. They are very happy and considered this rehabilitated road as a gift of God! Gearing youth toward optimism Floods of 2010 and unemployment causes depression among youngsters that increased the chances of their involvement in extremism or other unhealthy activities .FRD with consent of community decided to restore community centers at village Gul Imam, Ghara Ghazi and Khyber under its project of CBI funded by UNDP.

These community centers facilitated the local community in gatherings and as well as its capacity accommodated the youth related positive activities of sports i.e. Volley ball which is the most favorite game being played in the area. FRD arranged the necessary requisites like net and poles etc. in addition to the leveling the ground. Youngsters were really excited and they took active part in the games. For the elders it is a place for mutual discussion and chit chat, they also enjoy the games played by the youngsters and encourage the teams.

FRD has really motivated us toward positive activities and helped us to get out of frustration

and depression. I hope that this help will enable the talent to groom and one day it might produce players from our area. stated by young active participant of Volley ball.

Elders also found a place where they can sit and discuss the matters of common interest.it promoted sense of collective decision making. These community centers will contributed in bringing positive and collective sense among the local individuals and improved social cohesion and harmony. 31st March, 2012 - Families going to have their own house after many generations FRD has successfully accomplished the most challenging task by facilitating 35 families in acquisition of lands who were living in spontaneous camps of Saleem Sugar Mills Charsada and kheshgi Nowshehra. FRD was in close coordination with various individual philanthropist and organizations in this regard. FRD has raised the voice for the need of assistance to these families on various forums. The social welfare Department and other agencies working on land and property were approached and the issue was coordinated in this regard. Coordination was so effective that now all 35 families have land and can live their life with dignity. As the availability of land and legal rights are ensured, FRD has started construction of permanent shelters on these lands accompanied by kitchen and washroom. So far 18 shelters have been completed while remaining 16 are under various stages of construction. The families facilitated for land and shelter are poorest of poor without any productive assets for many generations and the tents they got have suffered a lot in terms of wear and tear. They were at the mercy of the nature for the last 18 months and didnt have any solution to get rid of the sufferings. Provision of One room shelter to these families has provided a dignified place of living to these families where they can live with proper protection against harsh weather and unhygienic conditions and can concentrate on building their lives with the peace of mind of having their own home.. 31st March, 2012 - Improving the infrastructure, providing opportunity for livelihood at Gul Imam FRD has restored livelihood of flood affected families by involving beneficiaries in rehabilitation of 11 different community infrastructures schemes in 4 villages of UC Gul Imam of district Tank. These schemes were identified by the community on the basis of their prioritized needs. Restoration of CBI not only improved the quality of life but also reduced the future disaster from flood through DRR measures. These schemes will benefit more than 55,000 people.

This project was designed specially keeping in view the current situation of Tank where the socio-economic conditions were not very favorable even before the floods, but the disaster has deprived the local people of their available meager resources. The weak infrastructure of the area has not only been destroyed, but has also paved the way for further destruction. To ensure sustainability of the project along with restoration of livelihoods and infrastructures FRD has also raised sense of ownership and responsibility in local community at every target village by formation of village level committees regardless of gender disparities. The community assured their full cooperation and affirmed their commitment for the care and maintenance not only in terms of these schemes but also promised to utilize the capacity of the community organizations for further activities on the self-help bases. The community thanked the FRD and UNDP for taking care of their needs and soothing out their miseries and pain. March 17, 2012 - FRD starts relief and Early recovery for returnee IDPs in Kurram Agency Foundation for Rural Development has entered an agreement with United Nations agency for refugees(UNHCR) for assisting returneed IDPs in Kurram Agency with Shelter repair Kits. The project will enable 1000 returnee IDPs families to rebuild their destroyed houses. It is to be noted that Kurram Agency has been suffering from deteriorated security situation and sectarian violance for the last more than 5 years. After restoration of peace in some areas of the agency, IDPs are returning to their places of origin. Shelter being the 1st priority is being addressed by FRD and UNHCR, which will be followed by other interventions of early recovery and rehabilitation in the area. this project is a sort of pilot one which will provide shelter to more than 6000 individuals. January, 8, 2012 - Specific Appeal for arranging land for homeless and landless people in Charsadda and Nowshehra Launched WE CANT HELP EVERYONE BUT EVERYONE CAN HELP SOMEONE" Today (on Sunday) an emergency meeting of management committee of FRD was held. Purpose of the meeting was to discuss the miseries of the flood affected population who lost their homes in flood 2010 in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa in Charsadda and and Nowshehra and are still living in spontaneous camps due to scarcity of resources. FRD assessment team briefed the committee on the finding of their visit of today. They shared the findings and pictures of the kids and people living in tents and elaborated their hardships. As FRD is already in touch with some humanitarian organizations for construction of shelters but the dilemma is, many of these families don't have a land where they can construct their house. Other members of the committee informed about some individuals who have shown willingness to give land for more than 10 years on lease to these families. The committee requested those members to further negotiate with those land owners and decide with them to start getting suitable rent after 10 years from these families, as some land owners are giving the land on this condition that the beneficiaries will hand over the shelter and land back to them after 10 years. The committee

had a feeling that the permanent solution to the issue is to enable these families to have full legal ownership to these families. FRD has already received about PKR 200,000, which was decided to be spent on acquisition of land for the most vulnerable families. All the members of the committee agreed that an appeal should be launched for the help of these vulnerable families to enable them to purchase a piece of land. Philanthropists from over the world are requested to contact us, we will arrange their meetings with the most vulnerable families and they can themselves select the families for assistance. Similarly kind hearted people from district Charsadda and Nowshehra are requested if they can give legal ownership of a small piece of land to these families, this will provide a permanent solution to the sufferings of these families.

These Kids Too Deserve To Be In Safe Boundaries Of Their Home Like Our Kids
December 15, 2011 - Work on community infrastructure in LP in Mohmand Speeded Up FRD is facilitating the Livelihood Program of Intercooperation in Tehsil Halimzai of Mohmand Agency. Community Based Organizations in the selected villages have been formed and RRA had been carried out in the villages. To build the capacity of the local CBOs CMST training had been arranged for the VOs/CBOs who were identified for implementation of physical infrastructure schemes. Keeping in view the scarcity of drinking water it was principally decided in the start of the program that only existing water schemes will be rehabilitated and no new scheme will be implemented till the time some mechanism for improving the recharge to underground water has been implemented. This is worth remembering that the underground water table is very deep and there is little recharge to underground water. The underground water table is already overexploited in many villages of the area. As a long term solution FRD has always been advocating for rainwater harvesting and efficient use of the existing water sources.

In the pilot phase of the livelihood program two villages were selected for rehabilitation of drinking water scheme, one village for improvement of irrigation practices and one village was identified for implementation of Disaster Risk Reduction Scheme (Flood Protection wall/gabion structure).

The community Organizations are implementing the schemes on their own, FRD is facilitating the communities and LP in timely and efficient implementation of the Program. Keeping in view the limited time available FRD team is closely following up with the communities to speed up the process of implementation as well as maintain the quality of the works for sustainability of the program.

In addition to the physical infrastructure schemes FRD team is also facilitating vaccination and deworming of livestock in the selected villages of the Upper Gandao valley.

15 November 2011 - Shelter Repair Kit assistance started for returnees of conflict affected area of Mohmand Agency. FRD with support of UN agencies for refugees (UNHCR) has started provision of shelter repair kits to the returnees inside Mohmand Agency. Working area of FRD, Tehsil Safi has experienced the longest conflict situation and hence the damages in shelter and community infrastructure are the greatest. Among the non governmental organizations working in the area FRD is among the very few organizations who have opted for working for the benefit of the extremely suffered portion of the IDPs. The project will assist 500 families who have lost their houses due to conflict or lack of maintenance due to displacement. In the initial phase beneficiaries will be identified in a participatory manner where the local communities will help in identification of the most needy families. FRD teams are verifying the beneficiaries identified by the communities through door to door assessments. Every verified family will receive roofing material for one room consisting of steel girders, T irons, brick tiles and polythene sheet, a set of one door and window, steel girders for lintel beam and one commonly used toolkit. The toolkit will consist of two shovels, one pick axe, one medium size hammer and two mud/mortar carrying pans (Tasla/tatkay).

Majority of the staff deployed are local people and people from other areas of FATA, so the project is not only going to provide permanent shelter solution to the conflict affected population, but is also supporting educated youth of FATA with Jobs inside FATA.

The project will be implemented through close coordination with crisis affected communities, government line agencies and FDMA. Involvement of the communities in the identification and verification of the beneficiaries is expected to bring transparency in the process and improve humanitarian accountability in the project. October 12th,2011 - Return of IDPs from Nahqi Camp in Mohmand Completed After the government has declared majority of the areas in Mohmand safe for return, IDPs have started returning. The 1st return from Nahqi IDPs camp in this phase of return took place on 11th of October 2011. For the last many days the IDPs inside the camp and outside the camp were filling voluntary return forms (VRFs).

To facilitate IDPs in the process of return FRD team was assigned the task of distributing the return NFIs set of UNHCR among the IDPs. Till date a total of 2,859 families have received the return NFIs package. These receiving families include both off camp and in camp IDPs. Similarly free transportation was Managed by FDMA for returning IDPs. Other UN agencies and the government departments also played a role in facilitating the return of the IDPs.

With the current returns the IDPs camp at Nahqi will virtually close down as no IDP family has yet opted for living in the camp and all the IDPs families are back to their homes.

The members of IDPs committees from various locations were very happy with the return, but expressed their concerns about the infrastructure damages in their areas of origin. July 24, 2011 - Shelter Repair kit assistance for the returnee IDPs of South Waziristan Agency Underway FRD in partnership with UNHCR is facilitating 600 returnee IDPs families in south Waziristan Agency in reconstruction of their houses.

The long standing conflict situation in South Waziristan Agency of FATA had caused displacement of thousands of families from their houses. As the houses are mostly made up of mud in the area which require regular repair and maintenance. While these people stayed away from their houses there was no one to take care of the houses. As a result the houses could not withstand the environmental impacts and suffered heavy damages. The active conflict in the area also contributed to damages of the houses.

In the start of May 2011 when government declared more areas as safe for return, FRD with support of UNHCR took responsibility of providing shelter repair kit assistance to 600 families. The shelter repair kit includes steel girders, T- Irons and Brick tiles (Roofing material) one window and one door. Each family who get the support is also provided with PKR 8500/ as cash for work. To support the construction process each village is provided with village tool kit which include the tools necessary in the construction process in locality.

Mr. Faiz Mohammad Wazir who is working as project coordinator for the response said "Till date 540 families have received the package and the remaining families will receive the package very soon." FRD has entered into an agreement with UNHCR to restore normal life in the areas of return for returnee IDPs both of sectarian violence as well as conflict between military and militants The project will provide shelter repair kit assistance to 1000 returnee IDPs families which will facilitate more than 7,000 individuals to live a life of dignity. This shelter repair kit assistance is a bit improvised as compared to shelter repair kit assistance in other FATA agencies as it has an inbuilt component of improving the hygiene conditions through provision of wash room material as well as roofing material for a kitchen. As for some IDPs it is more than 4 years that they have abandoned their houses and have taken refuge in other parts of the country. The absence of proper maintenance and prevalence of active conflict has caused significant damage to housing. This is really important to enable these IDPs to have their own houses at the places of their origin. It is planned to benefit the most vulnerable families who are in need of shelter and dont have the required resources for construction/repair of their houses. After verification of vulnerable families by FRD social team, shelter repair kit will be distributed to each targeted family. As raising the walls of the shelter is the responsibility of the beneficiaries, technical persons of FRD will keep on providing on the spot guidance and peer groups meetings trainings to incorporate possible DRR measure in construction of their shelters. The social mobilization teams of FRD will organize village level committees of the beneficiaries. These committees will not only help in verification of the beneficiaries but will also lead the process of early recovery in their villages, additionally to speed up the process of construction, water will be provided through tankering in villages where there is a problem or shortage of water for construction. Cash for work will be provided to each beneficiary in two installments ie. Initial installment of PKR.8,550 will be issued with provision of tool kits and final installment of PKR.8,550 will be issued after completion of construction process. FRD will be in close contact with coordination body, the return task force and other stakeholders to enable its project interventions meet the objectives of the project. The neutrality and impartiality aspect of humanitarian work will be maintained throughout the project. This project will help bring the life back to normal as after having a proper home the returnee IDPs can focus on rehabilitation of their livelihoods and other productive activities.

Mumlikat Bibi, a courageous lady, Who lost her home and husband to monsoon floods of 2010 but not her hope and courage Though i am a widow, but i will not lose courage" says Mumlikat Bibi who is a widow, living in village Namu Kuday of union council Mirza Dher in district Charsadda. Mumlikat Bibi not only lost her home to the monsoon floods of 2010, but also her spouse Javed Afzal, who supported the entire family.

The sentences uttered by Ms. Mumlikat are not just words, they have a history and reality behind them. Now you can feel the courage and confidence in the voice of this courageous lady. When the floods hit our house we rushed out of the rooms, as we could feel that the structure of the house has started collapsing as the mud continued to disintegrate due to high water. My Husband Javed Afzal was anxious to take away our valuables from the rooms because we could take none of our valuables from the rooms while we rushed out. I asked to wait till something becomes certain, and all of a sudden the room collapsed. We all started removing rubble and remains of the room to get access to our valuable things. This was terrible, our house was no more there, we were moving here and there in a haphazard manner. I was about 20 meters away to look for our cattle, when I heard the scream of my husband says Mumlikat bibi while tears flow down her cheeks. "When I ran toward my husband, I saw him in extreme pain as he was receiving electricity shocks from an electric wire from the remains of the room, in no time he was dead, and I was all alone to face the hardships of life. The villagers helped in his funeral, some humanitarian organizations provided me assistance with food etc but I had no place to live in. I experienced the hardest time of my life, as I have six kids, and they are too young. As a woman I didn't had all the options of earning open like men. Then these Girls (FRD Female Social Organizers) came to me and asked me to participate in the formation of the women committee of the flood affectees. All the women in the village knew my status, so after formation of the Committee (organization) all the women unanimously recommended me for assistance. As the responsibility of providing unskilled labour in this project was that of the beneficiaries and I didn't had any one who can provide these services. The people from this NGO (FRD) asked our neibghours to provide unskilled labour on voluntary basis. The neibghours too were cooperative and provided the unskilled labour in construction of my home. When my house was completed they also provided me Rs. 2500, which i will spend to run my kitchen for some time"

Mumlikat Bibi is a courageous woman she says "though I am widow but I am not going to give

up my courage, I have to support my kids, I am thankful to FRD, they have helped us build our house, they have also guided us on collective planning for our village, our villagers are also so cooperative. In such situations this is not only about assistance, this is about the care and respect to keep our dignity, thank you all people who have supported us in our hard times".

This is not just a shelter like we had earlier, this is more strong than our previous home, and we will take care of it to make it withstand future disasters" adds Mumlikat Bibi Road to the Development Medical facilities in Gul Imam are very limited.

Download Story Education Back On Track Cultural barriers and volatile security situation has already hampered vital efforts to boost education in the Tank Specially for the girls, recent flood made this situation more critical by damaging those few schools already existed in the area. Children who wanted to continue their study and parents who were concerned for the better future of their children despite of cultural barriers were totally disappointed after floods.

GGPS Darakai was one of those flood affected schools. Boundary wall of school needed to rehabilitate as it was completely damaged by floods. As a result of this destruction female teachers were afraid to attend school as they felt insecure without boundary wall and same was the case with the students. Parents were also reluctant to send their children to school because of this issue. Keeping in view the security situation and cultural values FRD with mutual consent of community decided to rehabilitate boundary wall to put education back on track. FRD with collaboration of UNDP has successfully rehabilitated the boundary wall that regenerated the flow of education. This scheme will benefit 2800 individuals. Parents can now send their daughters to school without any fear, to continue their education and to change the fate of Tank.

Download Story Safe and healthy Gul imam The sewerage line identification is the major outcome and achievement of FRD under its project of CBI in Tank funded by UNDP which was proposed to restore community infrastructure schemes to improve the quality of life in UC Gul Imam. Village organizations were formed to identify schemes for rehabilitation on the basis of their prioritized needs. Community prioritizes the drainage water scheme at Gul imam which was long lasting issue. Main problem of village was to drain out waste water which pooled in two ponds adjacent to the village. These water ponds were health and environmental hazards and proved to be great trouble for the inhabitants of the adjacent area.

Many humanitarian organizations even govt. departments didnt take initiative for the resolution of this issue because of its technical complications .FRD with team of expert engineers resolved this issue by using latest technology which ensured the possibilities of permanent solution in the form of a drainage system.

FRD facilitated in improvement of hygiene conditions reducing the health hazards and reduction in the diseases for more than 8000 local individuals by establishment of 612 ft sewerage line. The depth of the outlet is kept at 3 feet to increase its life time.

Download Story FRDBringing Change Tank is among the most backward areas of Pakistan and the most targeted area by military operations and devastated floods. People of tank are mostly illiterate and unaware of their needs, roles and responsibilities toward development of their area. They are weaved in the traditional and cultural norms by birth that hindered their abilities toward development. Many plans of different humanitarian organizations are underway to enhance the capacity building of these people but the social structure of Tank is so complicated that its not easy to mobilize them or develop their capacities as the people of Tank are divided in different tribes and castes. They are having disputes from many years on territory, power and other issues so having less harmony and cohesiveness. It was a great achievement of FRD of forming VOs to serve the

purpose of capacity building and to mobilize them toward a common goal. Formation of VOs brought harmony among villagers and enhanced the sense of ownership and realization of responsibility among them. For the effective mobilization of community special consideration was given by FRD to the committees meetings. The FRD social mobilizing team was strictly bounded to call frequent weekly meetings to guide the community regarding on ground schemes, its maintenance and to enhance their participation and to take feedbacks from community elders. Community was also sensitized about their resourcefulness and capacities. They were trained to solve issues related to the project. These mobilization sessions built their capacity to certain extent that some communities refused to take advantage of cash for work scheme. According to them it is their own village so it is their responsibility to work for its betterment by their own contribution. This was remarkable achievement made by FRD that left long lasting impact on villagers and villages as well. Community involvement brought sustainability to the work performed and it proved an effective tool in successful implementation of this project. Living with Confidence I was sleeping in my old room with my mentally disable son. Some drops of rain water fell down on my face. My eye sight is very weak so, I did not understand that what is happening in the nature and with my room. Next day, Early in the morning I went to my neighbor house and asked them, she told me that the room is near to fall. I became so worried and after that me and my mentally disable son were so afraid to sleep under my old, frail and fly-by-night room. Gul Marai said these words with tears in her eyes. Gul Marai is about sixty years old, living with her sole insane son in village Sharab Kor, about 80 km away from Peshawar, of Tehsil Safi, district Mohmand Agency. She has only one room in the world which was near to fall. Me with my mental son spent the rainy day or night in the open sky due to the fear of falling down the room. When I heard about the UNHCR/FRD shelter project, I did not expect that they will give me a shelter or repair my single room to save my sons and my life because being a single old female I had no such source of links to approach FRD social team. I was thinking how to contact them! Meanwhile FRD team came to my home and saw my falling room themselves they provided me shelter repair kit I cant express that happy moment in the words. "At last but not the least, UNHCR shelter project give me the hope to live a new life, and they made me able to spend the rainy day/ night in my own UNHCR/FRD shelter. They enlighten my life and give me a hope to live a rested life with my insane son without any fear.
