Academy of Sciences Malaysia Architectural Design Competition

The Academy of Sciences Malaysia Architectural Design Competition which opened for registration in January 2011 and received 38 entries at the closing on 30 March 2011, called for the design of its new headquarters building on a site situated on Lot 902-4 Jalan Tun Ismail, 50480 Kuala Lumpur. The Panel of Jury were impressed with the entries and awarded three top prizes, two honourable mention prizes and one mention prize to the deserving entries. The prizes were presented at a special reception on 30 April 2011 in Kuala Lumpur. On behalf of PAM, we wish to thank the Panel of Jury, Ar Boon Che Wee , Dato Sri Ar Haji Esa Mohamed, Datuk Prof A Rahman @ Omar Abdullah, Mr Ahmad Djuhara, and Ar Von Kok Leong, the Academy of Sciences Malaysia for initiating & sponsoring the competition, and to all participants who have submitted entries for the Academy of Sciences Malaysia Architectural Design Competition. IPEX 2011 Exhibition

21 to 24 April 2011_Sabah Trade Centre , Sabah
International Property Exhibition (IPEX) 2011 was successfully organised by PAM Sabah Chapter in collaboration with the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) from 21 April 2011 to 24th April 2011 at the Sabah Trade Centre. With the theme of Colours of Our City, the exhibition featured 68 exhibitors and over 91 exhibition booths, and showcased a variety of the latest properties, services and building products. IPEX 2011 was officially launched by Sabah Minister of Industrial Development, YB Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah, with Datuk Yee Boon Hai the Director General of DBKK representing DBKK Mayor, PAM President Ar Boon Che Wee, and PAM Sabah Chapter Chairman Ar Ho Jia Lit. The inaugural edition of the exhibition was held in 1988 as BUILDTECH, and featured 30 booths of primarily local building material suppliers. By 1997, the popularity of the exhibition had grown, and to cater for a broader scope, and growing variety of products, IPEX was launched, and incorporated Ideal Home Show.

Malaysia Services Exhibition (MSE 2011)

17 to 20 April 2011_Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
This is the 4th Malaysian Services Exhibition (MSE 2011) by MATRADE, an exhibition to showcase the expertise and capabilities of Malaysian service providers. It was held on 17-20 April 2011 at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, Abu Dhabi, UAE, in conjunction with Cityscape and Citybuild Six PAM member firms participated this year, as follows: Abu Dhabi 2011. The MSE 2011 was officiated by the Minister of Foreign Trade, UAE, Her Highness Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi and Minister of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia, Yang Berhormat Dato Sri Mustapa Mohamed. For 2011, MATRADE has divided the services sectors into six (6) clusters, as follows: 1) Construction & Related Professional Services 2) ICT 3) Specialised Training & Business Services 4) Oil & Gas Services 5) Healthcare & Hospital Related Services and 6) Energy, Power Generation & Environment Management Services) 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) Design Evolution Architects Sdn. Bhd Pakatan Akitek Sdn. Bhd Sacha And Tan Architects Sdn. Bhd SN Low & Associates Sdn. Bhd TAK Group of Companies (Teo A.Khing Design Consultants Sdn. Bhd) ZONE Architect The Construction & Related Professional Services Cluster was led by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) with 25 booths, PAM was as the Industry Representative for the Professional Services Sub-Cluster together with Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) and Institut Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia (IPDM).

PAM Members are encouraged to join future series of MSE, as such events create strong presence and enhance international visibility of Malaysian architects and architecture.

Executive Summary of the Minutes of the Eighth Meeting of PAM Council 2010 2011
29 April 2011_Puteri Pacific Hotel, Johor Bahru

President Ar Boon Che Wee thanked Ar Azman Haji Bilaji and the PAM Southern Chapter for hosting the meeting. Council unanimously approved the membership applications for 3 Corporate Memberships, 7 Graduate Memberships, 1 Associate Graduate Membership, 1 Academic Membership, 2 Student Memberships and 2 Reinstatement of Graduate Memberships. The Sabah Chapter had successfully organised the IPEX 2011 on 21 24 April 2011, at the Sabah Trade Centre. Ar. Ho Jia Lit thanked President Ar Boon Che Wee, Ar Mike Boon and Ar Azman Bilaji for attending the Opening Ceremony. Ar Boon Che Wee thanked the Chapter for the invitation and congratulate the Chapter for the events great success. So much so that the Sabah State had suggested to hold the IPEX annually. Council agreed that Sabah and Sarawak shall hold their respective expo on alternate years. Ar Boon Che Wee also congratulated the Sarawak Chapter on the success of Building Trade Show 2011, which was the biggest to date. PAM Golf 2011 would be held on 26 May 2011 at the Mines Golf and Country Resort. PAM Gold Medal 2011 Jury made a unanimous decision to award the PAM Gold Medal 2011 to Dato Ar Dr Ken Yeang. Council unanimously endorsed the decision. and 2 July 2011 are Alfredo Brillembourg Caracas, Urban Think Tank, Pitupong Chaowakul Bangkok, Supermachine Studio, Florian Idenburg/Jing Liu New York/Beijing, Solid Objectives Idenburg Liu (SoIl), Zhang Li Beijing, Atelier Team Minus, Jrgen Mayer H. Berlin, J. Mayer. H. Architekten, Hiroshi Nakamura Tokyo, Hiroshi Nakamura & Nap, Ole Scheeren Hong Kong/Beijing, Bro Ole Scheeren, Marc Simmons New York, Front Inc. and Alan Tay/Seetoh Kum Loon Singapore, Formwerkz Architects. The City Hall Kuala Lumpur supports the Datum: KLAF and is keen to pull as many City Hall programmes as possible to coincide with the Festival. The suggested programmes were River of Life Masterplanning Competition, Mayors Forum and Cultural Festival by sister cities of Kuala Lumpur and an exhibition to showcase the future development of Kuala Lumpur. A courtesy visit headed by PAM Deputy President to Jabatan Warisan Negara (JWN) was held on 26 April 2011, and the Committee handed to JWN the PAM Memorandum on Proposed Incentives for Heritage Building Owners. JWN was generally agreeable with the proposed incentives. JWN has also started working with banks to get differential rates for loans for heritage buildings and agreed to invite PAM to future discussions. JWN need assistance from PAM to do Heritage Impact Assessment and requested a list of architects in this regard. The Membership Committee to look at possibility of setting up a Sub-Committee of the Membership Committee in the East Coast, with Ar Abu Zarim as Chairman and Dato Ar Maurice Wee as Co-Chairman, to hold activities for members there.
