58 CHAPTER 4 CONCLUSION

This research has applied narratology approach to investigate the way of presenting and maintaining the mystery in The Moonstone until the truth is revealed. The merged theories, consist of Donna Bennets Narrative Devices and the three aspects from Mieke Bals Narratology, have made the research possible, and the result shows the relationship of both theories. The analysis is divided into three parts, they are: 1.) sequential ordering and fragmentation, 2.) non-narrative comments and distraction, and 3.) focalization and ambiguity. The conclusions taken from each part have shown the way to maintain the mystery in The Moonstone. Firstly, by examining the relationship between sequential ordering and fragmentation, the writer concludes that the order of story in the novel and the order of story based on chronological timeline have great influence regarding the comprehension of the story. The events are revealed to have been presented in dispersed stories, incomplete presentation of events, and retroversion. The mystery is hidden under these devices and readers will have to arrange the right fragment of story at the right place. The shifting of time period also has good potential to confuse readers. Secondly, non-narrative comments are proven to be capable of creating distraction. There are 73 non-narrative comments found with 26A, 34B, and 13C characteristic of distraction. Distraction is focused on fragments of story. Meanwhile, some fragments in the story have several non-narrative comments. From beginning of the story until the end, the number of non-narrative comments is lessen. The fragment

59 which contains less non-narrative comments is easier to be understood because it has less distraction. This relation is strengthen because of the nature of non-narrative comments itself; that its not always used to narrate the events of the story, it refers to topic outside the story, and its where hidden ideology of the text is placed. Thirdly, the writer has also found that the ambiguity contained in the focalization has been made for a purpose. There are 269 focalizations found, and as they have been classified into characteristic of ambiguity, it has resulted in 170A, 37B, 10C, and 52 focalizations have no intention of ambiguity. Focalizations have affected the understanding of some events near to it, or it may also affect the events afterwards. It is also seen that in The Moonstone, the focalizor of each chapter is mostly the narrator him/herself so they may narrate their own story according to their own understanding, though some of the stories are also narrated with the help with other characters focalizations. Though focalization may not contain any ambiguity, the result has shown that focalization is possible to be used as the device to produce ambiguity. As a whole, in the light of narratology, the way to maintain the mystery in The Moonstone is achieved by three methods, which are: creating fragmentation by sequential ordering, creating distraction by non-narrative comments, and creating ambiguity by focalization.
