A word made up of two or more existing words. A word made by joining two or more existing words For example: self-made (a compound adjective) as in He was a self-made man flower shop (a compound noun) as in They went to the flower shop.
Compound words are written either: as a single word (e.g. greenhouse, blackboard, whiteboard, steamboat, strongbox, crybaby, bloodthirsty, headache, blackbird, bluebottle, blueprint, bluenose, fireman, hardware, doghouse, seaworthy, something, everybody, newspaper, etc.), as hyphenated words (e.g. self-made, self-governments, never-go-well, well-prepared, well-known, etc.), or as two words (e.g. police station, flower shop, dining room, walking stick, White House, short story, etc. COMPOUND Compound Words can be subdivided into four groups according to semantic criteria. 1. Endocentric Compound It is compound that is a hyponym of the grammatical head, e.g. beehive and armchair. Beehive is a kind of hive and an armchair is a kind of chair.
2. Exocentric Compound (Bahuvrihi Compound)
It is compound that is not a hyponym of the grammatical head, e.g. redskin (orang Indian di USA) and highbrow (cendekiawan). Redskin is not a type of skin and highbrow is not a kind of brow.
3. Appositional Compound
It is compound that is a hyponym of both in head and modifying element, eg. actor-manager, maidservant.
4. Dvandva (Copulative Compound)
Copulative compounds are compounds which have two semantic heads. It is a class of compound words consisting of two elements having a coordinate relationship as if connected by and, e.g.: bittersweet and sleepwalk. It is not always clear which element is the grammatical head and the compound is not a hyponym of either element, but the elements name separate entities which combine to form the entity denoted by the compound. g. Adverb + noun
Son-in-law, a pain in stomach gesture, etc. Compound Verbs a. Noun + verb Blockbust, sky-dive, etc.

Card-carrying (terdaftar), capital-intensive (padat modal), gas-proof (bebas gas), airproof (kedap udara), etc.
