Sound Take Home Test

1. Vibrations of material objects. It is made up of compressions and rarefactions. While

traveling in air, sound is a longitudinal wave.

2. An instrument produces a sustained tone, in other words beats. When beats approach
the same frequency the created a resonance, because of constructive interference. In
retrospect you know that it is not at the accurate frequency when there is dissonance
because it creates destructive interference and produces awkward sounds rather than
harmony.

3. A change in frequency due to relative motion. If you are in front of a moving object the
pitch of the sound will be greater due to the forward momentum of the object, thus
increasing its frequency and making the sound louder.

4. Because sound waves consist of particle vibrations, the speed of a wave depends on
how quickly on particle can transfer its motion to another particle.

5. In short, loudness and pitch. The pitch of a sound depends on the frequency. The
loudness depends on its amplitude.

6. Vibration at the natural frequency produce resonance. Resonance is formed when the
forced vibrations match the natural frequency.

7a. Number of occurrences divided by time equals frequency. 15 waves divided by 2

seconds equals 7.5 Hz.
reated and frequency to create a new resonance and pitch, therefore a harmonic sound.

7b. 15 waves pass through 10 m. Therefore 15 waves divided by 10 m equals 1.5 m.

7c. Velocity equals frequency multiplied by wavelength. 1.5m multiplied by 7.5Hz equals
11.25 m/s.
8. Allen is going to start first because the speed of light is faster than the speed of sound.
Therefore allowing you to see the light before hearing the sound. Ex: A thunderstorm. It
seems that the lightening occurs before the thunder but the thunder is the sound made by
the lightening.

9. Stringed instruments produce standing waves whose frequencies depend on the length
of the string. In both closed and open tubes sound is created by vibrating air columns.
Some waves travel down the tube, while others are reflected back up. If the tube is open
on both ends all harmonics are present, if one end of the tube is closed then only odd
harmonics are present.

10. Yes, it makes a sound because the material objects still make a forced vibration by
colliding particles with the ground. However, we can never really know because no one
was there to hear it. Its a conspiracy theory!
