Introit Hymn Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. All may exchange a sign of peace.

SENTENCE: Gods love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5.5

THE COLLECT Living God, eternal Holy Spirit, let your bright intoxicating energy which fired those first disciples fall on us to turn the world again. Hear this prayer for your loves sake. Amen.

FIRST READING

Acts 2. 1-21

A reading from the book of Acts When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: Arent all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues! Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, What does this mean? Some, however, made fun of them and said, They have had too much wine. Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. Its only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Response: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

Psalm 104.26-36

O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, spread far and wide, and there move creatures beyond number, both small and great.....R There go the ships, and there is that Leviathan which you have made to play in the deep. All of these look to you to give them their food in due season....................................................R When you give it them, they gather it; you open your hand and they are filled with good. When you hide your face they are troubled; when you take away their breath, they die and return again to the dust.....................................................R

When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; may the Lord rejoice in his works; He looks on the earth and it trembles; he touches the mountains and they smoke.........................................R I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will make music to my God while I have my being. So shall my song please him while I rejoice in the Lord....................R SECOND READING Romans 8. 14-17 A reading from Pauls letter to the Romans For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are Gods children. Now if we are children, then we are heirsheirs of God and co-heirs

with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts | of your faithful, and kindle in us the fire | of your love. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL John 14. 8-17,25-27 A reading from the holy gospel according to John Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God.

Philip said to him, Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied. Jesus said to him, Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, Show us the Father? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

THE PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL Gracious God, Spirit of Life, surging freely, loving generously, seeking endlessly, you move upon the face of our world and embrace all its creatures with grace. Startle the powerful and the humble with your power and tenderness, your purpose and determination, your patience and mercy. May your Spirit of truth bring your peace and harmony to a divided and hurting world, that all who live with threat and war, disease and famine, be released from oppression.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Father and Mother of us all, we thank you for your nurture and your care; for how you pour your gifts out upon the church, blessing your people not only with bread and wine, but with talents and abilities, with dreams and visions, and with all that goes to make us one body - a body of light, of love, and of care and of healing. We pray for our Bishop John, and all who minister in your name; for our parish that your breath bring life and love to all called to witness to your grace and mercy. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Spirit of God, our friend and advocate, we pray for our country and all who govern us that all may share in the resources of this great land; we pray for the first peoples and latter arrivals, for new immigrants and asylum seekers, that your Spirit may break down the walls that divide and bring understanding and welcome to all. We pray for those with whom we share our lives, our families, and friends, those with whom we work and learn; may we all be filled with your love and bring your reconciling love to others. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Heavenly Joy, Rock of Ages, Wind upon the Sea, by your Spirit you inspired your disciples to go out and bring healing and hope to your people; we pray for all in need of your consolation, for all who are destitute, lonely, bereaved, or in pain. Comfort of God, come: soothe the pain of those who suffer sickness of body or mind, for those nearing death and those who wait with them. Hear our prayer for those on our hearts this day and those who have requested prayer. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Father, as we celebrate the birth of your church, and for what you have done through your faithful ones in this place and beyond, we pray the recently departed and those who years mind occurs at this time. Rest eternal grant to them O Lord, And let light perpetual shine upon them. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. We delight in your love O God, as your Holy Spirit brings light and life. We rejoice in your hopes, visions and dreams for your world and for all people. In a spirit of thanksgiving, we ask that you give us the courage to take the talents instilled in us to build and not bury, to strengthen us, as your people in the world, to proclaim your good news; hear our prayer as we pray as our Lord has taught us; Our Father.......... Reflections on the Readings Perhaps the oldest mistake we make with the Pentecost event is to speak of it as the Spirits "coming" as if Gods Spirit was absent from the world before this. Jesus gives us a clue to a different understanding, though, when he says that "the world cannot receive him because it isnt looking for him" Pentecost is essentially a breakthrough in our human capacity to apprehend and experience Gods activity which is (and always has been) active in all of creation (including us). At Pentecost we learn to look for Gods Spirit again, to discover anew, and the readings for today make it clear that Gods Spirit can be seen and found anywhere and everywhere we look. The story of Babel is a story of segregation, division and difference. It is this awareness, that there is nowhere that God is not, that breaks down Babels walls of division. In receiving the renewed awareness of Gods Spirit we find that we all speak a common Spirit-enabled language the language of God-imaged, Spirit-filled, humanity. Once our eyes are opened to see Gods Spirit in all things (including those who are different from us, who are hostile toward us, and who are most repulsive to us), everything changes. We know ourselves (and all creatures) as St. Francis did as Gods children and siblings of one another and we willingly share Christs suffering (as Paul says) to bring Gods creation into awareness of this unity and community in Gods Spirit. But Gods Spirit has to break through into our culture of selfishness and selfserving as individuals and communities and nations. When we explot the earth as resource to enrich ourselves, we have failed to recognise the Spirit. When we justify killing, exploiting, marginalising or dehumanising others, we have failed to see the Spirit in them. When we embrace a rampant individualism and consumerism, we have failed to recognise Gods Spirit and the community of all

things in Gods Spirit. Pentecost is a wake up call for our world how different might our politics, economics and environmental policies be if we recognised Gods Spirit in all things, and if we took time to really learn our common language? How would this consideration impact how you pray, speak, act, vote, spend, advocate and play? How can we participate in the Spirits work and help others to recognise Gods Spirit in all things? What then would it mean for us to take Pentecost seriously? What defences might have to come down? What hands might have to be offered to others? What beliefs might have to be released? What actions might have to become obsolete? What people might have to be welcomed and embraced? The early church expressed their understanding of the Spirit as one who comes as tongues of fire recreating and opening up semmingly impossible futures - may we know the gift of the Spirit too.
