Audi in the 2009 DTM

Audi targets its third consecutive title in DTM in 2009

As the title defender, Audi starts to the 2009 DTM season with an unchanged lineup of nine factory drivers and a version of the A4 DTM which has been subjected to further development. The squads aim is to clinch the title for the third time in a row in the touring car championship that is being staged in five European countries. With a proven team and technology that has been improved yet again, Audi is aiming to defend its historic result from last year in the 2009 season: In the brands up to now most successful motorsport season, Audi successfully defended the DTM title for the first time since 1991. On his way to achieving the feat of winning the championship in 2008, Timo Scheider clinched three single victories, while Mattias Ekstrm contributed three further exploits. In addition, the brands track record reflects eight pole positions. The new Audi A4 DTM in its dbut season has thus been the most successful generation of an Audi DTM race touring car based on the A4 model to date. In 2009, the project of defending the title starts under completely different auspices: In the year of Audis 100th

anniversary, and 25 years after the original inception of the DTM, Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrichs squad has the chance of bringing the title home to Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm for the third time in a row. No manufacturer has ever managed this feat before. After entering the DTM in 2004, Audi won the championship three times, thus becoming the most successful brand in recent DTM history. We want to continue this impressive track record, explains Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. Our drivers squad has played a major role in the brands exploits. Therefore, we will start with an unchanged lineup for the first time. In terms of technology, we have consistently subjected the most successful Audi A4 DTM to date to further development within the strict confines of the regulations. Consequently, the R14 evolved into the R14 plus, which will take advantage of the great potential of the successful model in an improved form. The R14 plus features detailed work in the area of the engine and is primarily characterized by aerodynamic refinement as well as detailed solutions. As in the past, Audi Sport continued developing the race car at its Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm locations. For Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline, title defender Timo Scheider (D), Mattias Ekstrm (S), the 2004 and 2007

champion, Martin Tomczyk (D) as well as Tom Kristensen (DK), who with as many as eight victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and five overall exploits at the 12 Hours of Sebring under his belt is the record holder in the worlds two most important endurance races, will compete again. A new member joining the squad is Katherine Legge (GB). In her 2008 dbut year, the Briton was driving a two-year-old A4 for the customer team Futurecom-TME. Now she will be contesting the series in a 2008 car for the first time. Mike Rockenfeller (D) and Markus Winkelhock (D) will continue to compete for Audi Sport Team Rosberg from Neustadt an der Weinstrae at the wheel of two 2008-spec Audi A4 DTM cars. Two race cars from the same model year will be driven by Oliver Jarvis (GB) and Alexandre Prmat (F) for Audi Sport Team Phoenix from Meuspath in the Eifel region. Audi thus concentrates its DTM commitment in the 2009 season on three race teams. In addition, it is anticipated that the team of Dr. Colin Kolles will privately field three A4 cars.

Three race cars from Audi Sport

Approximately 200 employees in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm are primarily responsible for developing and testing the race cars. Audi Sport is affiliated with AUDI AGs Technical Development (TE) and is therefore answerable to Michael Dick, Board Member for Technical Development. Head of Audi Sport since November 1993 is Austrian Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. Audi Sport was restructured and aligned for the future in 2007. Towards the end of 2009 Audi Sport will complete the construction of the first stage of a customer sport center in Ingolstadt for the new GT3 motorsport program. New routes in customer sport Audi has developed three race cars for the 2009 season: The A4 DTM of the R14 plus model range as successor to the R14 for the DTM, the R15 TDI as first diesel race sportscar of the second generation and the R8 LMS for international GT3 customer motorsport. While Audi Sport in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm continue to look after the factory motorsport program, the organization for GT3 customer racing was systematically expanded. Absolute responsibility for development is in the hands of Audi Sport in Ingolstadt. At the same time two other sites are integrated in this project: The bodyshell is taken from the quattro GmbH production line in Neckarsulm. The engine for the race car originates from Gyr in Hungary.

Audi improves the winning model again

The Audi A4 DTM introduced last season set a record at its dbut: With six victories, eight best times in qualifying and the title win, it was the most successful DTM vehicle based on the A4, which Audi has designed and built since its return to the DTM in 2004. In accordance with the internal model designations, R11 (2004), R12 (2005), R12 plus (2006), R13 (2007) and R14 (2008), the current R14 plus (2009) represents the sixth generation of the vehicle. The engineers from Audi Sport in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm were faced with a difficult task: the challenge of improving the champions car from the year before yet

again, within unchanged confines of the regulations. All of the principal design features of the touring race car, which is based on a tubular frame and a carbon fiber shell for the driver, and powered by a 460-hp four-liter V8 engine, have remained the same. The most clearly visible modification when the hood is open is the air box on top of the engine, explains Ulrich Baretzky, Head of Engine Development at Audi Sport. It is a consequence of the requirements that arose from a new cooling air passage at the vehicles front. The charge changing process meaning the inflow of fresh gas following the outflow of exhaust gas has been optimized by the new intake plenum. Audi has also achieved improvements in torque development and power output, in other words the engines drivability. One of many other detailed optimizations concerns the more favorable oil circuit. When summing up the total of their achievements, the developers have to make a realistic assessment. Basically, in the sixth year of continuous development, the potential of any engine design has been fully exploited, says Ulrich Baretzky. Wolfgang Appel, Head of Vehicle Development, and his team clearly defined some focal areas with respect to the

10 11 development of the other components of the car as well. Even though we compiled a list of about 80 minor or major items on the whole vehicle, we clearly concentrated our efforts on aerodynamics, says Appel. We modified various aspects of the air flow around the vehicle, the diffuser and the flow through the engine compartment. A rear wing mounted from the top, which promises to provide better flow characteristics, is a conspicuous feature. This idea made its dbut with the Audi R15 TDI Le Mans sports car this year. The aerodynamic effects of new solutions are first calculated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), followed by model wind tunnel testing and ultimately by testing at AUDI AGs full-scale wind tunnel. Furthermore, the engineers focused their attention on all aspects which contribute to maintaining the performance capability of the race car at consistent levels across the racing distance of typically more than 60 minutes. Two significant factors determine the sporting result: the way the car handles the deterioration of the tires over the course of time as well as the reduction in vehicle mass caused by the consumption of the fuel in the tank. New components

of the braking system are an additional aspect. The British manufacturer AP, who equips all DTM cars with a standard system, presents clearly less massive brake calipers for the 2009 season. This influences our choice of aerodynamic flow toward the brake, explains Appel. The clearly improved air flow through the calipers will also guarantee higher consistency during the race. Audi Head of Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich is certain: With the R14 model last year we developed the most competitive concept based on an A4 so far. This race car possesses enough potential to again fight for the place at the top this year as the R14 plus. After all, our goal is to defend the title.

The AP Racing brake system was extensively modified for the 2009 season

Unchanged strong squad

Never change a winning team this was the motto used by Head of Audi Sport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich when selecting the drivers for the 2009 season: The driver squad remains unchanged to the previous season for the first time since the brands return to the DTM. Timo Scheider earned start number one after winning the title. The now 30-year-old German had a dream season: In April 2008 he celebrated his first career DTM win at Oschersleben, in August at Brands Hatch his second. His third victory of the season at the Hockenheim finale sealed his first DTM championship win. The Swede Mattias Ekstrm, DTM Champion a year before, again fought long and hard throughout the 2008 season for the title. With three victories he completed Audis excellent season and was third in the standings in the end. Eight-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen from Denmark and Martin Tomczyk complete the line-up for the quartet of 2009 model Audi A4 DTM race cars. Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline receive a charming addition in the form of a fifth power: Katherine Legge drives an Audi A4 DTM from 2008 for the Kempten based squad. The other year-old cars are fielded by two proven teams: Audi Sport Team Rosberg prepares the race cars for Markus Winkelhock and Mike Rockenfeller, who won the Le Mans Series last year with Audi. His former team mate in the cockpit, Frenchman Alexandre Prmat, competes for Audi Sport Team Phoenix in the DTM. The team from the Eifel region also prepares the Audi A4 DTM of Briton Oliver Jarvis.

Audi factory driver Mattias Ekstrm (S)

With 83 races and two DTM titles to his credit the 30-year-old Swede belongs already for a long time to the most successful drivers in the series. Even though his performance and three individual victories last year were not enough for the title Ekstrm can look back proudly. He fought till the end for the championship and in doing so set a personal record. With 13 DTM race victories for Audi during his career he has now surpassed the previous record held by Hans-Joachim Stuck. Between races the Scandinavian re-charges his batteries in his Swiss domicile Salenstein. He follows the MotoGP series in his spare time away from the DTM.

Oliver Jarvis came from single-seater racing as newcomer to the DTM for the 2008 season. His respectable record: He qualified five times as best year-old car driver, he took the checkered flag twice as fastest driver of year-old car and collected five championship points. Since the winter Jarvis has proved that he does not see the DTM as half-way-halt in his career. He moved from Great Britain to Switzerland to be close to the majority of DTM circuits. That he started taking German lessons at the Audi Akademie at the same time further underlined his ambition.

Tom Kristensen is the record man and the one to break them. At Le Mans last year the Dane won the 24-hour race for the eighth time and in doing so broke his own historical record in the Audi R10 TDI. With overall victory at Sebring in March 2009 he became the first driver in history to win the classic 12-hour race for the fifth time on the debut of the new Audi R15 TDI. After recording a total of three wins, seven pole positions and a total of 16 podium positions in the DTM he aims for more in 2009 season: He wants to fight at the top of the table. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans he aims to break the next record.

Martin Tomczyk fought for the title until the final DTM race of the 2007 season and was third. After a 2008 season which did not meet his expectations the Audi driver now aims to pick up where he left off in 2007. He has already demonstrated that he can: In 2006 and 2007 he scored three wins, and he has taken six pole positions in his DTM career. Even though the DTM enjoys enormous publicity the private Martin Tomczyk is completely down-to-earth. Markus Winkelhock joined the Audi family as factory driver during the 2008 season. He scored his first points in only his second race. He went on to score points on two more occasions with a year-old car. With Audi Sport Team Rosberg he can now convert the experience gathered with Audi during this learning year, since he stays loyal to the team from Neustadt an der Weinstrae. The team has competed in the DTM since 2000 initially as customer team with the Abt-Audi TT-R, since 2004 as Audi factory team with A4 DTM. The team has already won the DTM title four times with and for Audi. Fifty employees attend the four 2009 generation cars and also the year-old car of Katherine Legge this season. The motorsport involvement is, however, not only restricted to the DTM: Abt Sportsline looks after the Polo Cup cars for Volkswagen and furthermore starts with two single seaters in the ADAC Formula Masters as well as with the Audi R8 LMS in the ADAC GT Masters and in the 24-hour race at the Nrburgring.

Former Formula 1 World Champion Keke Rosberg established his own race team in 1994, which has made a name for itself in touring cars and formula racing since then. Winning the German Formula 3 Championship in 2002 with Gary Paffett numbers among the outstanding victories. Young Formula 1 star Nico Rosberg also made his first steps in motorsport with the paternal team. Managed by Arno Zensen, the team with its headquarters in Neustadt an der Weinstrae was active in the 1990s in the old DTM with, among others, Klaus Ludwig and Hans Stuck as drivers. Team Rosberg has also been involved in the new DTM since its inception. In 2005 it concentrated solely on single-seater racing, before returning to the DTM as Audi factory team. Twenty-four employees work in the DTM 2009 for Audi Sport Team Rosberg. Todays Team Manager Kimmo Liimatainen started his career in the squad as Formula BMW driver in 2000.

The DTM

Anniversary of a winning concept

In 2009, the DTM enters its tenth season since its rebirth in the year 2000. The series abbreviation, which once stood for Deutsche Tourenwagen-Meisterschaft, today represents the most popular international touring car racing series. In television, but also in the stands it attracts the largest number of spectators alongside Formula 1. The DTM broke yet another record during the 2008 season: 165,000 spectators visited the finale in October won by Audi driver Timo Scheider on the way to being crowned the new Champion. The concept promises pure excitement and energy: In qualifying, now comprised of four parts, further competitors are knocked-out after each time segment. The extremely entertaining near 70 minute long sprint races are interrupted by two mandatory pit stops. The DTM grid is a mix of young stars of tomorrow and established touring

In its tenth season the DTM will once again captivate several hundred thousand fans

car drivers and stars who have achieved everything in other disciplines such as Tom Kristensen, who holds a record with eight victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Internationality is key With its driver line-up and calendar the DTM also demonstrates its internationality in the 2009 season: 19 drivers representing seven nations met the public at the DTM presentation 2009 in Dsseldorf. The series makes six starts in front of German fans, four times in front of the European public in France, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Spain. Complex regulations Audi and Mercedes-Benz, two of the worlds most renowned automobile manufacturers, are committed to the DTM. Fans will see three Audi A4 DTM generations in action throughout the 2009 season. Different base weights improve the performance parity: Cars from 2009 compete with a basic weight of 1,050 kilograms, cars one year older with 1,030 kilos and cars two years older with 1,010 kilos. In addition, ballast weight is imposed subject to a cars success. Pure excitement with lap times differing by mere tenths and hundredths-of-a-second are guaranteed.

Timo Scheider about the flow of the track Hockenheim probably has almost every conceivable type of corner and radii. There are very, very fast kinks, hairpin bends and corners with generous run-off areas. The race track itself is very attractive. Due to the sequence of corners a track unfolds around which you can achieve an extremely fluid rhythm. The Motodrom is sensational, when you enter it you use the curb on the left-hand side. You have to be very careful on concrete surfaces, grass paving blocks and grass. One mistake and youre parked in the wall. There are plenty of overtaking places: heading towards turns 2, at the end of the Parabolica towards the hairpin bend, into the Sachs Kurve and probably also in the Opel corners.

Katherine Legge about the speed at the EuroSpeedway I like the EuroSpeedway Lausitz. It has something of everything: Fast and slow corners, the track is challenging and there are enough places to overtake. It is one of the tracks I really look forward to. The tarmac surface is very uniform around the entire circuit except several sections that are very aggressive. The corner which I find the most appealing is the first one. I like the hard braking just before turning-in. You drive the last section before the start and finish in the oval, approach the first corner after the straight at extremely high-speed before braking very hard. An exciting part for drivers and fans alike!

Markus Winkelhock about traction and tires The Norisring looks a lot easier than it really is. You have to brake long and hard, need a good car balance and plenty of traction. The circuit is a lot of fun. Its in the family: My uncle Joachim always enjoyed driving here. The track is very bumpy. If it rains the car can aquaplane easily here on the standing water. The circuit is murderous on the brakes. Although the tarmac is rough the tires do not wear very much, you just have to be careful that you dont spin the wheels. The corner I like the most is the left-hander exiting the chicane. To build up speed, you get so close to the wall on the right that the wing mirror is scratched. During my career I once used up eight wingmirrors on a single weekend.

Mattias Ekstrm about the reduced practice time I like the races in Zandvoort the best. The track is comprised of many great corners, crests and compressions. You get into a good rhythm. At the start there is virtually no grip. The grip increases with every lap, which you really feel with new tires. Since the new regulations allow less practice, less rubber will go down on the track. For this reason the tarmac could be harder on the tire. When it rains you should drive on the rough tarmac and not follow the ideal line on the very new tarmac, otherwise things get tricky. There are plenty of opportunities to overtake. Its one of the few race tracks where you can still win from fourth or even fifth on the grid. Zandvoort means a lot to me: I won my first race here in 2002 and Abt Sportsline gained the title.

Tom Kristensen about technical versatility Oschersleben is a flowing circuit with several very fast corners and lots of changes of direction. A good balance is therefore absolutely imperative. You have to turn-in to the slow corners aggressively and come out with plenty of momentum. Its a circuit at which every car needs a wide range of qualities. There are circuits where it is mainly a question of traction or high-speed, such as the Norisring. At Oschersleben you have to drive with huge commitment. The grip in general is low and only increases after a lot of laps. The track surface is very gentle to the tires. The track is very slippery in the rain. Especially in the first corner, the tires have virtually no grip whatsoever in the wet. You are confronted with a decisive moment right at the start of a lap. All winners since 2000

Mike Rockenfeller about the crucial corners With its mix of corners of different radii the track is far from simple. It is a modern track with fine grain asphalt. Traction, clean driving, braking for the first corner from high-speed all very challenging. The short loop is difficult, the Bit Corner is fun. A perfectly set-up car is crucial. In bad weather you can either distance yourself from the rubber on the ideal line, but also drive exactly on it. This works really well with the Dunlop rain tires. After the short loop there is a left-hand curve. You lean on the curb on the outside here. You tend to drive the Bit Corner too quickly, then you lose momentum in the Hatzenbach-Bogen. Its important to find a good compromise, to take a lot momentum into the corner and get on the pedal early again.

Oliver Jarvis about his home race Brands Hatch has a lot of character. Paddock Hill is one of the best corners anywhere. You have to brake without being able to see into the corner. Also, if you are a little off line youll have massive problems at the exit. The track is very short, but nevertheless challenging and physically demanding. The atmosphere is something very special. The circuit is much lower than the grandstands, so you can see almost the entire facility from the stands. Its like being in a football stadium. The tarmac is smooth to the tires, which is why you can make several runs during qualifying with just one set of tires. The pole position is not necessarily an advantage. Because the start-finish straight slopes towards the pit wall the position on the outside can provide better grip than the one of the fastest driver on the inside. All winners since 2006

Martin Tomczyk about the line at Barcelona Barcelona is a fantastic circuit, which is all about maximum speed in many places. After the long straight and the back straight the aerodynamics and brakes must also be excellent. Your car needs more traction than previous years due to the new chicane. Therefore all aspects are required. The best solution is that you drive a car which is wellbalanced in every aspect. You can drive different lines in the rain, but not everywhere. In two or three corners the line is dictated to you. The tarmac is only moderately rough. Weve never had excessive tire wear at Barcelona. Overtaking is fundamentally well possible. My personal highlight was winning here in 2006.

Alexandre Prmat about the rollercoaster ride A very fast track awaits us, perhaps the fastest in the DTM, and there are rises and falls. You drive through the final corner before the start and finish at 200 kph. You cant see the exit of the corner due to a slight drop. Itll be really interesting when the entire field storms through this section. The tarmac is inconsistent, in some parts very aggressive to the tires, and in others very gentle. To win at Dijon it appears to me that your grid position is even more important than elsewhere. I love the circuit and I have fond memories of a win in Formula Renault and testing in Formula 3. I was a little surprised when we tested here with the DTM. It just looks fantastic when our cars are pounding around the track. The fans will love it.

Timo Scheider about the track conditions Hockenheim is a modern and balanced track. The tarmac is slightly bumpy. The grip level is different in the Motodrom compared to the rest of the track. The tarmac is coarse grained around the majority of the circuit which means that it has large pores. Nevertheless you can cover very long distances on one set of tires. The level of grip doesnt change significantly with a change in temperature. If the weather is bad the Sachs Kurve can be a critical point. If you make a mistake here in the rain you either end up in the gravel or the tire barrier. At other points the large run-off areas tend to forgive driving errors. You can many different lines through the Sachs Kurve inside, middle or outside.

History: Audi in DTM

Winning streak under the sign of the four rings

Audi is one of the most successful brands in DTM history with six championship titles, 48 wins, 47 pole positions and 36 fastest race laps to its name. Whether V8 quattro, the TT-R from Abt-Audi or the A4 every Audi model that has competed in the DTM to date has won the prestigious title at least once. Two consecutive titles with the V8 quattro Audi made a lasting impression following its first appearance in the DTM. With the production based Audi V8 quattro Hans-Joachim Stuck clinched the title for Ingolstadt in its debut year not least of all due to superior quattro transmission. Frank Biela triumphed in 1991. Audi was, as a

result, the first manufacturer to successfully defend a title in the DTM before the brand with the four rings temporarily withdrew from the series in 1992. In 2004 Audi returned as factory to the race series. Mattias Ekstrm won the DTM title at the first time of asking in the Audi A4 DTM. The Swede also triumphed in 2007. In the following season Audi successfully defended the title: For the first time Timo Scheider took the coveted spoils of victory in the Audi A4 DTM. Team Abt Sportsline, which fielded a compact Coup based on the Audi TT between 2000 and 2003 as customer team, presented Audi with its sixth DTM title. The team from the Allgu region became champions with Frenchman Laurent Aiello in 2002.

Mattias Ekstrm won his second title with the Audi A4 DTM in 2007
