Audi in customer sport

New chapter in Audi Sports winning history

The Audi R8 LMS opened a new chapter in the 2009 season: For the rst time Audi oers its motorsport customers a thoroughbred customer car. The mid-engine sportscar developed for international GT3 classes performed brilliantly in its premiere year. The R8 LMS faced cars from as many as eight market rivals in the sportscar sector. The result: Twenty three single victories and the titles in the FIA GT3 European Championship, in the ADAC GT Masters in Germany and in the Belgian GT Championship. That the basic car, the Audi R8 V10, was voted World Performance Car 2010 is further proof of exactly which genes are in the R8. The customer sport sector complements a wonderful winning tradition of Audi in motorsport. For example in the eld of sportscars: In the past ten years Audi has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans eight times. Five of these victories are credited to the Le Mans Prototype R8. It was the source of the name for the Audi R8 which is available on the market since 2006. We are delighted that our youngest child the Audi R8 LMS hit the bulls eye immediately, explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. The customer demand is enormous.

In its debut season the R8 LMS won three championship titles including those in Belgium and the FIA GT3 European Championship with Phoenix Racing (left) and in Germany with ABT Sportsline (right)

In 2009 it was the teams closest to Audi Sport that raced the R8 LMS. Now it is the turn of the private teams. For this purpose Audi Sport restricts itself to the delivery of 20 new cars since the logistics for customer teams must also be established in parallel. The existing cars will be brought up to the latest specication by an update kit. More than 15 teams eld the Audi R8 LMS in dierent GT championship and in the 24 Hour races at the Nrburgring and at Spa-Francorchamps during the 2010 season. On top of this comes a worldwide unique oer in GT3 customer

sport: The Audi driving experience allows customers with sporting ambitions to book race events with the AudiR8LMS. In this way the Audi customer sport project presents itself, in only its second season, in a broad, attractive international program.

Eciency and sustainability

Technology transfer and eciency means direct benet for customers

Technology transfer, eciency and sustainability three current catchwords which enjoy special meaning in Audis motorsport program for 30 years. Motorsport was and is a medium for Audi to accelerate technologies with a promising future, stresses Head of Audi Motorsport Dr.Wolfgang Ullrich. Already since the 1980s the term quattro stands for much more than just a technical system: Audi tested four-wheel drive in motorsport, helped it to establish itself in every model range and, in doing so, initiated a paradigm shift. Other manufacturers, such as the core competitors in todays premium segment, were forced to follow suit due to Audis technological and economical success. There were also transfer eects in the material technology area that still have an impact today. In this way, the brands rst complete aluminum engine arose for the Audi Sport quattro unveiled in 1983. Today, light-weight design and construction is a core skill at Audi. Aluminum is regarded as a valuable resource to increase the eciency of road cars through reduced weight like in the Audi R8. Even CFC (carbon ber) in the 1980s still an exotic material found in race cars such as the Audi 200 quattro is, in the meantime, produced at Audi for road cars. The soft-top storage box on the R8 Spyder is made from this material.

The production-based structure of the R8 LMS is given the acid test around the Nrburgring Nordschleife

Diverse

technologies

to increase eciency nd their way from motorsport to the production line at Audi

The debut of the TFSI power plant in the Audi R8 Le Mans sportscar and the 24 Hours of Le Mans victory in 2001 were pioneering for the introduction of fuel direct injection in mass production. Audi wrote history with TDI technology at Le Mans in 2006 as rst diesel winner. Both engine technologies make a signicant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions. The Audi R8 LMS is the latest prime example of technology transfer. Audi gained valuable lessons for the manufacturing process and design of the Audi Space Frame(ASF). Its life-cycle is subject to a type of time-lapse in the R8 LMS. Also the high-pressure injection system, a heat-exchanger and the exhaust system are examples of just how motorsport and production continue to generate specic reciprocal impulses for development.
The V10 power unit from the R8 5.2 is used in the Audi R8 LMS this also means technology transfer

Customer Sport Center

Audi with dedicated customer sport center

The next stage of the Audi customer sport project, initiated in 2008, began after a dedicated customer sport center in the immediate neighborhood of Audi Sport in Ingolstadt was opened. The customer sport program with the R8 LMS, which gains increasingly on importance, is the third element alongside the DTM and Le Mans, says Michael Dick, Board Member for Technical Development, who opened the building together with Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. With the Customer Sport Center we have created the opportunity to perfectly support the constantly increasing number of R8LMS customers. Furthermore, it is a clear sign of the priority and importance that customer sport has for Audi. The production Audi R8 is produced by quattro GmbH in Neckarsulm. The R8 LMS is also built by quattro GmbH at another branch in Heilbronn. The new 950 square meter Customer Sport Center in Roderstrae, Ingolstadt also houses a comprehensive parts store alongside an oce section and exhibition hall. The Customer Sport Center embodies a crucial strength of Audi: the worldwide logistics. In this way the brands race customers also benet from the fact that the bulk of the parts deliveries are subject to the same processes and

routes as the logistics for the worldwide distribution of Audi production line products. The parts distribution for the R8 LMS now also follows these structures which have grown and matured over the years. With these group logistics we can perfectly supply every global base, says Romolo Liebchen, Project Leader R8LMS at Audi Sport. As a result, in addition to the optimum support of European based teams the future overseas support is also guaranteed. In this way in another phase we also initiate co-operations with partners such as our importers to be able to deliver the relevant markets promptly and as required.

Audi race experience

Unique fascination for customers worldwide

The Audi driving experience expands its portfolio with unique worldwide oer: Since the 2010 season Audi customers with sporting ambitions can book exclusive races with the Audi R8 LMS. Audi makes its Le Mans winning team available for this task Audi Sport Team Joest. The Audi race experience oers customers the opportunity to compete in a race with a professional Audi factory team for the rst time, and without having to commit themselves long-term or with high nancial means, says Klaus Demel, Head of the Audi driving experience. Im absolutely delighted that we could secure Audi Sport and Reinhold Joests team as partners for this project. The basis for the new Audi race experience is the Audi R8 LMS, which was developed specically for use in customer sport. Furthermore, during the Audi sportscar experience, 120 customers could already see the powerful 386 kW midengine sportscar in action at the end of October in 2009. The next step is now the Audi race experience. It provides customers the opportunity to compete in races themselves with the Audi R8 LMS if desired even together with a professional race driver like Le Mans winner Marco Werner for example. The preparation and support of the cars is undertaken by one of the worlds most successful sportscar teams: Reinhold Joests team which has already won the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans six times for Audi. The idea to allow customers to race with such a highcaliber sportscar like the R8 LMS could actually only come from Audi, says Ralf Jttner, Managing Director of Joest Racing GmbH. The task is unusual for us, but without

doubt very interesting. We are proud that we were selected as race team. For the 2010 season the Audi race experience Team Joest plans a total of six races with two cars in the VLN endurance championship at the Nrburgring-Nordschleife. Furthermore, events are planned with the Audi R8 LMS at circuits and the driver training ground in Gro Dlln, during which customers are trained and can also attain the necessary driver license. As far as I know Audi is the worlds rst automobile manufacturer to have such a highlight in its program, says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. This shows yet again just how innovative and progressive the Audi brand is. Our colleagues at the Audi driving experience and Reinhold Joests team, with which we have worked together successfully now for twelve years, will oer the customers an exclusive and unforgettable motorsport experience. The Audi R8 LMS, which us a very forgiving GT3 car according to our factory drivers, is perfectly suited for this project, and which Audi Sport fully supports.

Audi Sport

Winning for 30 years

Audi Sport was established 30 years ago and is aliated since then with the Technical Development (TE) of Audi (responsible Board Member Michael Dick). Be it rallying, touring cars of every type or sportscars: In every discipline in which the sport department competed it celebrated victories and won numerous championship titles worldwide. Audi has implemented 16 dierent motorsport projects between 1980 and today. Currently there are about 200employees at the sites in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm responsible for development and testing of the race cars. Head of Audi Sport since 1983 is Doctorate of Mechanical Engineering Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. Triple-core program Audi is involved in sportscar racing since the 1999 season. After eight Le Mans victories the brand faces the greatest challenge in endurance racing in the 2010 season with the further developed R15 TDI. In parallel since 2004 Audi contests the DTM and has won four titles in six years, including a hat-trick between 2007 and 2009. The brand established a third core element for the 2009 season. The Audi R8 LMS is the companys rst thoroughbred customer sport race car, winning three championship titles and took 23 races in 76 races in its debut season. A dedicated Customer Sport Center was opened in Ingolstadt in spring 2010, in order to supply the 30 customer cars delivered worldwide.

Further improved winner

Audi won three titles with the R8 LMS and took the GT3 class victory at the 24 Hour race at the Nrburgring in its debut season in 2009. For the 2010 season the brand used the experience gained to further develop the R8 LMS logically and denitively. Because, once a car is developed and homologated the FIA, the motorsport governing body, only allows a single evolution throughout the models entire life cycle. During the further development we concentrated specically on the reliability and serviceability, says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. All the experience gathered with the help of our partners last season owed into the evolution version. We are convinced that we will deliver our customers a reliable and easy to handle car that corresponds to the Audi brands high quality standards.

The Audi R8 LMS was designed for a broad range of races and championships worldwide and is now equipped with steel brake rotors

The technicians reworked the chassis and suspension. In the process the reliability of the entire concept was further optimized. That, for example, modied front and rear axle assembly line components are used proves the exceptional qualities of the standard Audi R8. For the 2010 season Audi customers requested that the car could be entered in a broad range of championships and races. One hour races should be contestable as wellas 24Hour races without appreciable additional technical eort. For this reason Audi also changed the endurance racing versions braking system from ceramic to steel brake rotors. The broad range of use also covers climatic peculiarities. Audi therefore further improved the engine cooling systems eciency. The R8 LMS can be raced without problems even where ambient temperatures are extreme. A fan for the water cooler, two ventilators for the oil cooler and a new Gurney ap on the front air exit duct improve heat dissipation. New, higher threshold values for the maximum temperatures of the oil system were cleared for racing following endurance tests. As a result, the R8 LMS also resists the most extreme ambient conditions, as can easily be the case in countries of overseas customers.

The complex electronics were optimized for race events, a new architecture was developed which deviates from the production car. New is also an exhaust system, which further proves the technology transfer between the assembly line and racing. The R8 LMS benets from the road cars strengths, since the previous motorsport design made way for the production version. Audi Sport does not only benet in this area from the close association with the Technical Development (TE) of the brand. The newly developed six-speed race gearbox is particularly maintenance friendly. Audi developed this transmission specically for the R8 LMS together with a system supplier. It allows to check wearing parts through an inspection opening in the housing. Removing the gearbox is not necessary for this.

The vital on-board electronics were reworked for the 2010 season

Every new innovation on the R8 was

thoroughly tested

Over the past months the Audi R8 LMS evolution version was tested extensively on various circuits and test benches. It has proven its reliability during several endurance runs. Owners of cars delivered last year also benet from the new developments, which are available in kit form for 2009 model car. The Audi R8 LMS endurance racing version has also been rened. In this case the serviceability was improved, especially the ability to change those bodywork parts rapidly that are usually aected in an accident. Finally the engineers optimized the light output. To ease identication

yellow driving lights are used. As a matter of course the race drivers and also every Audi customer benets from LED daytime driving lights. In addition, a radiator grille specially developed for night running contains another pair of highpower headlights. Engine power and minimum weight of the Audi R8 LMS are subject to classication by the FIA and national sporting authorities (balance of performance). At the start of the 2010 season the FIA dened a minimum weight of 1,340kilograms as well as an engine speed limit of 7,500rpm, which is increased in the highest gear to 8,500rpm.

An endurance version of the R8 LMS will once again compete in the 24 Hours Nrburgring in the 2010 season

GT3 sport worldwide

Successful global model

The international sporting authority FIA initiated the GT3 class for the 2006 season. Within four years the young category developed into an unusually successful model. It opens a common race platform for fascinating sportscars from America via Europe to Australia. Nationally, but also country-wide series and renowned single events such as the 24-hours Nrburgring facilitate the use of the Audi R8 LMS and its competitors. The common worldwide regulations allow teams and manufacturers to build a single type of car valid for every series. Many advantages and various unique features characterize the new class. Many dierent car designs and concepts compete, such as in the engine, chassis and bodywork elds. They are adjusted by a fundamental balancing procedure which protects performance parity by awarding restrictions (balance of performance). In addition, since 2009 in the FIA GT3 European

Nine makes competed against one another in the 2009 FIA GT3 Championship. More brands announced their intentions for 2010 and 2011

Championship a regulation came into eect that, through the addition of ballast, takes into account current sporting success weekend by weekend. Instead of the classic technical advantages seen in single models in other series, in the GT3 category the vehicle price becomes the primary regulator within the market. However, not only the race cars but also the human factor is classied: Before the season starts every racing driver, subject to experience and success, is registered in a system

A well conceived balance system creates

parity between the dierent concepts

of four categories. The consequence: Through additional ballast as well as predened combination possibilities a dominant driver pairing is avoided from the outset. A positive variety of brands in each and every series results due to another regulatory article. Every team must eld two cars in the majority of GT3 series, a car manufacturer must be represented by a minimum of two and a maximum of three teams. Therefore extremely attractive and varied grids are guaranteed, monocultures are avoided. A common race format of two one-hour races per weekend with obligatory driver changes, common regulations for team image, cars and pit installations as well as brand competitions within the overall classication make the GT3 series even more attractive. Automobile manufacturers have long since acknowledged the opportunities of this development. Audi competes against its core competitors BMW, Porsche and shortly also Mercedes-Benz in the GT3 category. On top of these come Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Ford, Jaguar, Corvette, Mustang, Viper and Morgan. Very few professional championships boast such brand depth.

The increasing importance of the GT3 class is also expressed in its equivalent media value: For the 2010 season the FIA GT3 European Championship is broadcast in 37 European countries via pan-European channel Motors TV. In Germany the 14 races of the ADAC GT Masters series are broadcast live by private television channel kabel eins for the rst time.

GT3 cars such as the Audi R8 LMS are very popular also in endurance races like those held at the Nrburgring

24 Hours Nrburgring

Season highlight around the Nordschleife

The highlight of the GT3 sportscar season is the 24 Hour race around the Nrburgring on 15/16 May, to which more than 200,000 spectators are expected again. Even though the GT3 class is not the top class at this event, well thoughtout regulations should also allow production-based GT3 cars the chance of overall victory. Last year team ABT Sportsline won the GT3 class and nished second overall with the R8 LMS on its debut outing in the 24 Hour race at the Nrburgring. The Allgu based team also competes in 2010 with two R8 LMS cars. The driving squad includes Audi factory drivers Mattias Ekstrm, Oliver Jarvis, Lucas Luhr and Timo Scheider. Team Phoenix Racing, which elds three R8 LMS, has also strengthened its line up with Audi factory drivers. Mike Rockenfeller and Marcel Fssler compete for the team based in the Eifel region. Furthermore, with Frank Biela and Hans-Joachim Stuck at Phoenix as well as Marco Werner at Abt, three very successful former Audi factory drivers join the grid. The new Audi customer team Black Falcon brings the total number of Audi R8 LMS on the grid to seven. Audi Sport guarantees the technical support required for these cars as it does at every other GT3 race throughout Europe, says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. Racing the cars and also driver choice is completely in the hands of the teams, which are also competing against one another. We are already very interested to see just how our customers fare in this race.

The Audi R8 LMS conquers the world

Six teams closely associated with Audi Sport elded the AudiR8 LMS throughout the 2009 season. Their task: To collect as much experience as possible which subsequently went into the nal version of the GT3 sportscar, the delivery of which started in the rst quarter of 2010. Fourteen teams have already collected their customer cars by mid April. In spite of considerably greater demand, for the 2010 season Audi Sport limited supply within the European market to a maximum of 20 new cars due to logistic reasons. We must rst create the necessary structures to be able to support customers overseas as well, and in keeping with the high Audi standards, explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. In 2011 everything will be in place. The sole exception for the 2010 season is Australian Mark Eddy who acquired a year-old R8 LMS which he races this year in the Australian GT Championship. The car generated quite a storm and is very popular with the fans, reported Eddy after the rst races down under. The other R8 LMS customer teams, which plan to compete in ten dierent race series and in the 24-hour races at the Nrburgring and at Spa-Francorchamps, have had similar experiences. A summary of the customer teams and in which championships and events they compete can be found overleaf (as of April 2010).

History

30 years of history writing

Audi Sport writes history for 30 years: Be it as rally world champion, Le Mans winner or multiple touring car champions in the DTM and Super Touring the four rings represent numerous single wins and championship titles. The brands winning history started exactly 30 years ago with the quattro. Championship wins since the 1980s Audi won four world championship titles in rallying before the company also demonstrated the superiority of fourwheel drive on Pikes Peak, on track in the Trans Am and IMSA GTO series, in the DTM between 1990 and 1992 and in super touring cars. New chapter opens in 1999 Audi entered a completely new arena after entering the LMP sportscar class in 1999 following the ban of four-wheel drive in FIA circuit racing championships. Eight wins from eleven Le Mans starts as well as sportscar titles from the USA to Europe complete the achievements recorded by the Audi R8, R10 TDI and the R15 TDI. On top of this come four touring car titles in the new DTM since 2004. New core element since 2009 The Audi R8 LMS opened another attractive platform for Audi last year. A race car for GT3 customer sport was created based on the production R8 sportscar. The R8LMS sportscar starred in its debut season with sterling performances: As FIA GT3 European Champions Christopher Mies/Christopher Haase won the worlds most important GT3 series, Christian Abt won the ADAC GT Masters title in German and the Belgian duo Jean-Franois Hemroulle/ Tim Verbergt clinched the Belgian GT Championship. Two remarkable class victories round o the Audi R8 LMS results: The new design also prevailed in the 24-hour races at the Nrburgring and Spa-Francorchamps.

The R8 LMS Audi media service

For the rst time this year racing the Audi R8 LMS lies entirely in the hands of privateer customer teams and, as a result, also the public relations. The majority of GT3 teams have their own press service, the respective contacts of which can be found in pages 26 to 33. The Audi Communications Motorsport team in Ingolstadt provides basic information about the R8 LMS, such as this booklet, and also the most important information regarding the races in which customer teams participate during the season. Motorsport newsletter Brief information and results from every race contested by the R8 LMS are found in our weekly Audi Motorsport Newsletter, which is dispatched in the German and English languages to the worldwide press distribution list by e-mail on Sunday evenings during the season. MediaInfo The most important developments in the R8 LMS customer sport program like, for example, the opening of the new Customer Sport Center in Ingolstadt are communicated in press releases (MediaInfo). Media database All photographs and information is found in our media database www.audi-motorsport.info. Accreditation is required for high resolution images. You can register for our press distribution list via the database.
