Tom Baker Defeats Bryan Goebel by One Pin
To Win PBA50 Greater Birmingham Open
By Jerry Schneider - PBA
TRUSSVILLE, Ala. Four-
time PBA50 Player of the Year
Tom Baker converted a spare and
then bowled a nine-count on his
fill ball in the 10th frame of the
championship match to win the
PBA50 Greater Birmingham
Open presented by Ebonite by
one pin at Lightning Strikes
Lanes.
The PBA Hall of Famer defeat-
ed 10-time PBA Tour titlist Bryan
Goebel of Shawnee, Kan., 227-
226, in the title match for his
10th career PBA50 Tour title and
his first since winning the PBA
Senior Pepsi Open in Decatur, Ill. in August of 2010.
His 10 PBA50 titles now matches his 10 PBA Tour
titles.
I knew it was just a matter of time before Id win
again, I just didnt think it would take this much
time, said the 58-year-old Baker. Over the past few
years I was always qualifying well, but couldnt seal
the deal in match play. I finally got it done today.
Goebel, trying for his first PBA50 Tour win, fin-
ished the match first with three strikes in the 10th
frame forcing Baker to at least get
a spare and nine-count in the 10th
for the win which is just what he
did. It would have been slightly
easier for Baker had he struck on
his first ball in the 10th but he left
a solid nine-pin.
That took the wind out of my
sails a little, said Baker, who is
the only player to win four con-
secutive PBA50 Player of the
Year crowns, but I was confident
that if I made the spare I could
make the shot I needed on the
last ball to win.
Both Baker and Goebel
advanced to the title match by being the top two scor-
ers in the fifth eliminator round. Baker had a 525
two-game total and Goebel, 504, eliminating three-
time PBA50 Tour titlist Hugh Miller (488) and
PBA50 Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr.
(427) who won last weeks Sun Bowl In the Villages.
This is the first time weve used this eliminator
format and I enjoyed it, Baker said. Your mindset
is a little different because youre bowling for score
more than you are an opponent.

HACKENSACK, NJ - Stan Niemiecs youth travel-
ers embraced the friendly confines of Bowler City
and pounded the maples with three 700s, seven
600s and thirty-three 200s. When the smoke
from the smoldering timbers dissipated, the league
had two new season highs: individual net series [775]
and four-player scratch game [931]. Jake Rollins, rid-
ing the crest of having been named the Bergen
Records North Jersey High School Bowler of the
Year, terrorized the plastic-sticks yet again, blazing
his way to 258-278-239: 775, thereby lifting his thir-
ty-three game league-leading average to an incredible
242.70. Jakes outbreak was infectious as his Fair
Lawn teammates all responded with over average
sets; Matt Myers slammed 235: 611, Hassan Izzard
183: 529 and Katrina Plaszky 152-150 as Fair Lawn
swept past a tough Bowler City II squad which post-
ed fine scores from southpaw Justin Garcia 213-265-
196: 674, Welmer Paguay 225: 602, JonMikal Sepero
192 and Kristen Kane 178. Fair Lawns victory sets
up next weeks finale against first place Bowler City
I which, despite losing its third straight match, has to
win just one game to snare this years championship.
Third place Boonton needs to sweep and then hope
for the unlikely, but mathematical possibility, that
Fair Lawn takes six of seven points from BC I to
forge a three-way tie. The scenario exists since
Boonton stayed alive by taking two of three from the
leaders behind Patrick Teshimas 243-228-218: 689,
Karl Kattermanns 202-214 and Brian McGraths
season-high 257. BC I countered with stellar posts
from John Draney 216-224, Ryan Perez 215 and Rob
Gilbert, Jr 212.
Holiday IIs high rollers put on a clinic, led by
Kevin Macchia [215 avg] 217-237-258: 712 and
Colette Malyack [207 avg] 235-259-194: 686 in earn-
ing seven points from the vacancy. The quartets mid-
dle game of 931 net was a season best: Colette 259,
Frank Olandesi 194, Joe Malyack 241 and Kevin
237.
Brian Rizzi [202 avg] blasted 232-243-237: 712
and Ana DeLeon added a 244, but shorthanded
Holiday I was overmatched by a torrid Bowler City
III squad, 2843-2569. The entire BC III foursome had
a hand in the sweep: Nick Reyes 236-200: 617,
Patrick Sucero 212-201, Tiffany Sucero 215 and a
huge over-average outing from Olivia Wank 178:
515.
In another position encounter, Matt Russells 186:
536 led Montvale past Bowler City IV in a tight
match, 2565-2512. Shorthanded BC IVs best was
Caitlin Tombos 203: 540.
Chris Latham Rolled a 724 Set
At Parkway Lanes
ELMWOOD PARK, NJ Chris Latham led all pin attackers with
scores of 233-257-234 for a 724 series in the Wednesday, Teterboro
Bowling League at Parkway Lanes.
Matt Dunning tossed 267-696 followed by Rich Miller Sr. with 236-
695, Joe Donnarumma 237-670, and Jim Viola rolling a 234 in a 655 set.
