The 13Ps of Leadership
()
About this ebook
The author, however, came up with some prerequisites/elements termed as the 13Ps of leadership, explained in an applied and practical manner, which is hoped to shape the minds of present and potential leaders, in imbibing positive responsibilities and characteristics of leadership.
Speeches, quotations, direct views, shared quotations and stories and verbal views (mostly drawn from the Nigerian society) were all captured and used in an attempt to give a picture, a clear message, and meaning to the 13Ps.
The book focuses on the psyche of an individual as a leader and a sane human being with the objective of making the society a better place. It is focused more on public leadership but not limited to all other leadership positions. Every other leader should be able to pick a thing or two for further improvement and self-development (CEOs, MDs, political office holders, etc.).

INTRODUCTION
"Everyone is a leader, but not everyone is good at it"
- Ahmed Shehu Awak, PhD.
Leadership could be such a complex concept to understand. People view leaders and leadership in different perspectives based on the unit or organization, part or whole of a society they are in-charge of, looking after or governing, depending on the circumstance. For example, you look after or take care of your family, but you could at the same time be the governor of your state. Of course these are two different tasks with the same end result -- Providing Leadership.
The author is simply trying paint the word Leadership
and its scope here, just to create a better understanding of the book.
As a father, husband, uncle, grandfather and so on, you tend to play different roles in influencing and determining the character and perception of the people around you. Let us take the family unit as an example:
Mr. Paul is a family man with three kids; two boys and a girl. He is quite religious alright; he prays and goes to church every Sunday at least. He has a serious passion for music and gambling and he doesn't hide it from anyone. He spends half of his income on these two things. His passion for music made him name his kids after some musicians; first son named Devante of the famous group Jodeci
, second son Tupac after the legendary rapper Tupac Shakur
and the third child, a girl named after his dream girl Latifah, better known as Queen Latifah
, a female rapper/actress. Mr. Paul's life is defined. After he closes from work he goes straight home and it is music all through. He has all the musical instruments but doesn't know how to play any. He is just comfortable having it around his sitting room, all over, and spends his time watching MTV, Channel O or playing and listening to grooves of all genres. Weekends, he is off to the casino and takes his kids along. He encourages the kids to learn how to play the musical instruments and even got a part time teacher for that purpose. Mr. Paul wants his kids to go into music as a career.
Now this is the way he grooms his kids. This is the leadership style of Paul for his family. He shows his kids that it's actually okay to become a musician and go to the casinos. These kids will automatically see nothing wrong in going to the casinos and all that. They have been groomed like that. It's a normal way of life. Mr. Paul as the leader of his family chose a path of leading the future of his family. You can't fault him because that is his prerogative; beer and wine on the house at home, the whole nine yards. Now these kids will grow up with the same mindset like their primary leader, the father. Whatever they choose to do or become in line with his lifestyle is good to go because that's the primary orientation they got from their primary and most important leader; their father. To top it all, the mom is indifferent about all the stuff going on too.
Mr. Nazif is a medical doctor with five kids, all boys. He likes serious academic work and being a doctor, encourages his kids to embrace all spheres of academic endeavors. He has a library at home filled with all sorts of books from medicine, to architecture, engineering, and law and so on. The library could pass for that of a school. He has a collection of video documentaries in various fields and is always watching or reading. He makes sure, as his child, you do extra reading or watching of the collection of documentaries and discusses with you about it trying to find out where your passion lies, so that you would be encouraged to follow that path. As a father, he puts in extra effort in guiding and counseling his kids to become professionals in the future. That is his style of leadership for his family.
As a politician, Mr. Aminu believes in complete and absolute free will. He does not provide any guidance for his kids, but is there to support you in whatever you choose to become, as long as it is legit. He will do his best to make sure you succeed if you are ready and willing. Of course as a politician he would not allow you go into something illegal even if he does not see anything wrong, but because it could tarnish his political image, which he safeguards with all his might.
Well, we have a picture of how Mr. Paul, Nazif and Aminu live their lives and the difference in lifestyles and how they run their families vividly. All we are trying to paint here is how people differ in thoughts, perceptions and lifestyles. A person's lifestyle could be a direct manifestation on the future generation of his offspring and how they may turn out in life.
The probability of a good man producing good citizens of the society is definitely higher than that of an irresponsible person.
These lifestyles which become a leadership style of the primary unit of a family, has a lot to do with the future of a society because people groom people and people are in-charge of any society. It is out of the people that have been groomed by parents, that some become leaders of the society, positively or negatively.
People groomed positively by parents eventually add value to the society by becoming constructive citizens like just and good politicians, doctors, engineers, teachers and the list goes on.
The negatively groomed ones turn out to be otherwise in aspects of life in the society. This is a simple logic that does not require much thought over.
The focus of this book, however, is on leadership as an individual and its bias is on public leadership for some basic reasons:
1. The public leadership sphere determines how things work in the world (most especially democracy, in the new world order).
2. The individual is key to success of the unit, community or society he shepherds as a leader, if found in that position.
These reasons gave rise to the conception and birth of this book.
Leadership shall be discussed from the social science view in the next chapter so as to fully understand the scope of leadership not limited to a family unit only.
The family unit examples were only used to enable you picture what leadership is and how diverse it can be or is.
Anyone tasked with the responsibility of looking after one or more people, in terms of welfare or any other endeavor, be it professional or otherwise is a leader in his/her own capacity.
This is the author's perception of a leader, and each unit is as important as the next, irrespective of size or scope.
There are certain societal factors that however influence the mindset of an individual sometimes, which we cannot overlook.
Your child could fall into the company of negatively groomed friends, which could cause a deviation from his primary upbringing, but then, if the values of his primary unit are still there, chances are he may turn around and come out clean at the end of the day. Just a passing thought anyway, which is a reality.
The biblical adage you reap what you sow (Galatians)
could come in handy here.
Despite all other influences, an individual's capabilities and weaknesses do not hide in the long run. It is up to you to make a check list of what you are capable of and what you are not. What do you benefit if you don't add value to your society or people around you?
As a potential leader, or already a leader, your top most priority is adding value to your society, anything less than that, you do not deserve to be a leader.
Barrister Solomon Dalung in a post on his facebook page said that "Leadership is a serious business and only men of justice can be stakeholders".
The post referred to his state, which he was vying to become the Governor, he further stated that with determination we are committed to give governance a new direction on the plateau. Our guarantor is God who knows the state of our minds
Hmm..... Well said Barrister. It's a good
