Operations Management Project

This is a group project (groups of 5 students) based on a live case study of a medium to large sized business organization engaged in operations activity. Goods manufacturing concerns would be ideal to study. Select the organization in which any one of the group members has a direct or indirect access to the senior management so that you can arrange meetings easily and get the needed information and support. You may need to get a letter of authorization from the university to present to the organization. Select an organization: FMCG, chemical, textile, garment, 5-star hotel, pharmaceuticals, automobiles (at least 300 employees). Interview senior level operations managers (production, packaging, purchase, warehousing, quality control, etc), collect some information related to operations processes and systems. Prepare report on operations processes involved in production of 5 products from purchase of raw materials to distribution of finished goods. Each major process should be clearly defined; inclusion of flow diagrams and pictures of machines and equipments would add real value. If you do not get enough detailed information from the concerned managers of the selected organizations, get some specific information, pictures, etc. from the net and mention the sources in your report and presentation slides. Your report should be prepared in MSWord and presentation slides in PowerPoint. The entire presentation of the group should be of 10 to 12 minutes. Please limit the introduction of the company, its directors, etc. to very minimum. Each student should present the entire process involved in a product along with his/her critical analyses about the effectiveness, and recommendations for improvements. Submit report and give presentation in 2nd last class.

Project Report Contents

1. Title Page should have name of the organization, names of group members and their IDs. 2. Brief introduction of the organization including its factories and other facilities and their locations, its main functional area, its products, etc. and the product portfolio. A product portfolio chart is also expected.

3. Structure of the operations and production functions like various departments and their activities. 4. Processes involved in the entire supply chain (4.a. suppliers, 4.b. purchase process, 4.c. warehousing, 4.d. inventory management, 4.e. production processes, 4.f. packaging processes, 4.g. quality control, 4.h. finished goods warehousing, and 4.i. distribution process) of the selected products of the organization. This section should have separate sub-sections for each selected product. For a service marketing organization, service blue prints are a must.

The expectation is that students present the following in their reports and presentations: A. The detailed information on all of the above-mentioned processes and aspects as being practiced in the selected organization. B. Analysis of each process/aspect of the organization as per the knowledge obtained from the course with justification. C. Recommendations for each process/aspect of the organization with justification.

You can include the actual photographs taken of various machines or facilities that help the reader/audience in having a clearer understanding.

Note: Reports should also contain a printout of slides in black and white handout form (6 slides per page) just after the title page. Each slide of PowerPoint should be numbered. The project report should be made in MS Word and properly bound. Each group should submit the report in the 2nd last class and also present the project through PowerPoint slides.

Important note/warning
Anything copy pasted (from websites, company reports or from other students reports) would fall under plagiarism. Even if you are describing some process that is given to you by the organization in printed form or if it is present in their webpage, you need to at least paraphrase it. There is absolutely zero level of tolerance for any copy, especially of any previous reports. Mention the sources of all information, pictures, etc. that you take from the web.
